The Christmas party is always a lot of fun...hope to see you there this year. If you have any questions, please contact me - Alix Day, 250-656-6471. New Arrivals: Finn is the newest member to our family. She is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. She was born on February 25th. She came from Foxgrove kennels in Ontario. She is a bundle of energy and fun. I am having a great time with her foundation training and look forward to working with her in the years to come. Heather Alexander From the Editor: The NOSA Newsletter is published three times per year (October, February & May). I m always looking for contributions (happenings since the last newsletter; triumphs or tragedies of our members and their dogs; interesting articles; future events; etc.) for the next issues. My thanks to those who have contributed to this edition and I hope this interest will continue for future publications. Please send comments, questions and articles to me by e-mail at johnrsanta@shaw.ca and I will do my best to fit everything in. Thankyou.... John MacLucas, Editor Keep Informed of all NOSA Activities go to http://www.nosa.ca

BRAGGING! Click to Train www.nosa.ca NOSA has been online since June 2004 Most popular pages: classes, schedule, registration info, key dates, club contacts. Easy to track traffic patterns: during registration period and just before the start of classes, those pages get the heaviest use. Other times, people download club newsletters and surf the site looking at club history and our life memberships page, read about our successful Celebrating Dogs event from the Fall of 2008, and discover the role NOSA plays in the community, including the Sidney Days photo galleries. Comments and suggestions welcome. E-mail nosa.website@shaw.ca "Okay, most of you NOSA folks know Jenna and I from our years of attending competition obedience classes and attempting AIOC and CKC obedience trials. After six years of the competition obedience ring we decided to branch out. Good plan...most of you are probably saying... So in March 2010 we entered the FPTOC Tracking Dog Trial (CAN TD) and passed. The first win is very sweet indeed! In June 2010 we tried Rally Obedience Novice (RN) at the Nanaimo Outdoor Trial and to the surprise of many competitors at the show we passed...even securing High In CLASS. WOW...we're on a roll now...so I thought okay we must be able to acheive our Canine Good Neighbours Certifcation (CGN) and also secured that at the June 2010 Nanaimo Outdoor Trial. Hmm what was next... let's lower the competition obedience bar and attempt...pre-novice obedience...so in August 2010 GVDOTC trial at the RCMP Barn we again tried the obedience indoor ring...nope no success there. Hmm these outdoor activities and especially tracking seem to be Jennas passion, so let's train for Tracking Dog Excellent (CAN TDX) and let's attend a tracking course. It was too hot throughout the summer to train for tracking, so in late August 2010 we began to practice TDX tracks...then in mid September 2010 attended the Sil Saunders Tracking Seminar in Bow, Washington. While at the seminar I was persuaded to certify Jenna to enter AKC tracking trials. We were tested and certified for us tracking tests...all good stuff. Okay now we are entered into the GVDOTC set for October 3, 2010 TDX trial...we drew the last track of the day...nerves, nerves, nerves.. There really was nothing to be nervous about as Jenna was just leading me (as she is known to do) on a long walk through the field pointing out leather items. We finished the TDX track in 10 minutes with no problems whatsoever! LET"S HAVE A PARTY! SO FAR 2010 has been a great year for us in the dog world of competition and I have learned a valuable lesson...make sure you work to your dogs strengths. Jenna and I are much happier working together on outdoor events. With Jenna being my first dog, many excellent Vancouver Island competition trainers have helped me along the way and NOSA is no exception, thank you! I also need to thank Kathy Hansen, Janet Matthews and Sybil Lewis for teaching me to trust my dog along the tracking trails! Regards from both Betsy Moyer & Ranzfel X Generation CGN, RN, CAN TD, CAN TDX Who knows what's next..."

More Bragging Three Title Weekend Bella (Quinleighblu's Meant To Be RE CD AGN AGNJ CGN ADC) and Brenna Litwack had a three title weekend at the Tyee Kennel Club trials in May 2010. On Friday, they competed in their first ever agility trials, taking first place in Novice Jumpers with Weaves and Novice Standard, in both trials 1 and 2. Saturday saw Bella in the Novice obedience ring, where she took two first places, with her highest score of 194. On Sunday, she was back in both the agility and obedience rings, taking three more first places in Novice agility, two in Standard and one in Jumpers, and a first place and second place in Novice obedience. She also won the Highest Aggregate Golden in agility, a prize donated by Diane Henn. Late August, Bella competed in her first NADAC(Scallywaggs) trial, winning with three first and one third placements. Bella then travelled to 100 Mile House where she competed in her first AAC trial, coming home with her ADC, earned with two first places and one second place, as well as two first places for her Gamblers. She then travelled to Nanaimo where she picked up CKC Intermediate agility Qs. Thank you everyone for your encouragement. Brenna Litwack Rod and Lindy took part in the Flat-coated Retriever Society of Canada's national specialty in Calgary last July. Lindy won Open 'B' High in Class twice in one day (obed photo). We just started in NOSA's beginner's utility class this fall, taught by Karen and Judy. We also competed in CKC agility trials during our Alberta trip (agility photo). And Lindy completed her Agility Ass'n of Canada's Advanced Agility Dog of Canada title and her Advanced Games Dog of Canada title in the past month. Rod Deacon Tag got his CD this year! He also got his Rally Adv and Rally Excellent and his CGN....Philippa Sloan

More Bragging Our Sheltie puppy Aimee won her first points towards her Championship at the Victoria City Kennel Club show in August. Aimee (Belmark Beloved at Kel-Lani) won Best of Winners from the Junior Puppy class for 3 points, and went on to win Best Puppy in Breed over Special under Judge Maree Mckenzie. What makes this so exciting is that it's my first points ever on a dog! And the day was extra special as my teacher, Phil, was there to cheer us on. You see, I've learned conformation handling by going to the drop-in classes with Phil Griffith. If you go each week, it's like a course and teaches you everything you need to know to show your dog yourself. When I started, I was a true beginner. It felt so weird to hold the lead in my left hand, and I had no idea what "down & back" even meant. Remembering back to those first lessons, I can't believe how far I've come and how much I've learned. Thank-you Phil for being such a great teacher and to NOSA for offering handling classes! Kathy Estridge Little Stitch - the Champion! "Dream it, Believe it, Achieve it". Well, after several years of weird poodle behavior, including seeing "boogy men" on course, my quirky little boy did it. He is the 2010 BC/Yukon Regional Champion in AAC Agility. Not only did he win his class, but he was 4th over all out of 403 of the top dogs competing in the regionals - a pretty darn good accomplishment considering the huge number of border collies and shelties competing. All it takes is hard work and perserverance - and a good solid background of Obedience~!! Lots of performance dog competitors may argue about the obedience, as they don't want their dogs to be "handler bound". But, most importantly, obedience teaches impulse control and the desire to please the handler, a must in any sport. Don't be discouraged if you don't have the dog of choice for your chosen sport, the secret is to go out and have fun and make sure your dog has fun as well - and don't be surprised when you come home a winner. Liz Hayes

still more bragging! Colby and I had a great summer in agility. We competed in the BC/Yukon Regional championships. After two days and six runs, we came in second place in our height division. We then headed off to Spruce Meadows in Calgary for the National Championships. Again after two days and six runs we placed 3rd nationally in our division. I was so proud of my girl! Heather Alexander In the breed ring Lola has only been shown 3 times this year with a Reserve at the Manchester Specialty in Washington State, a BOV and then a G2 at the Vic City show in August. Between Rally and obedience she has done 5 trials going first place in all five for her class, finishing 2 Obedience titles (AKC & AIOC CDs) with her AKC Novice title being 3 straight Q's with a first place for all 3 legs, a reserve HIT and 1 HIT. Quite a year for her and now she is ranked #2 Standard Manchester Terrier for Canada, Scott and I are so proud. Shay Lockhart CKC Report: We have judges secured for our April 2011 CKC Trial which will be held at the RCMP Barn at the Saanich Fairgrounds. More details in the next newsletter.
