Dedicated in Loving Memory of Dick Parrott November 2016 Priceless TM Expanding Families One Pet at a Time

In Loving Memory of Cover Photographer, Dick Parrott Photo by Karen Smith, Studio Thirty Six East Richard Dick Owen Parrott, 75 of Wilmington, died on October 8, 2016 after a hard fight against multiple health issues that surprised us all. He was born on October 4, 1941 in Caro, Michigan. He leaves behind his wife, Nancy Lancaster Parrott of Wilmington and a sister in Michigan, Kathy Parrott Bennett. His multiple fur babies will also miss him. Dick came to Wilmington in the early 1970's to work for the Star News. He later became co-owner of Longleaf Photo. He joined the New Hanover County Sheriff's Department as a special sworn deputy and then became a regular deputy. In the late 1980's, he joined Wrightsville Beach Police Department, retiring in the late 1990's. His passion was photography. Dick's specialty was his knowledge of lighting which showed in his bridal portraits, family portraits, pet portraits, and his indoor/outdoor images. Dick loved watching his students get it with their own photography. Dick was a member and past President of Azalea Dog Training Club. He helped many animal organizations with fundraisers. Dick loved his photography with Monty's Home, Pawsitive Partners Prison Program. He adored his monthly sessions photographing the cover model for PawPrints Magazine. Dick would always go to the back page of the magazine to see who found their furever home. Tribute to Dick Parrott on pages 21-25

JAN BATTEN, D.V.M. EVE MILLS, D.V.M. JOANNE THOMPSON, D.V.M. (910) 799-3400 Cats ~ Dogs Hi! My name is Pikachu. I m an adorable 5-monthold neutered male kitten. I have a fluffy tail and ears, soft fur, and large sweet paws. I love human contact and will beg for attention with a soft chirping meow. I also love treats, toys, and other cats. Alas, when I was taken in to the vet, I tested positive for FIV, the feline immunodeficiency virus which has no vaccine and no cure. I can live for many years inside where I will be safe from secondary infections, but I cannot be around cats who are negative for the disease due to the risk of transmission. I would dearly love to have a home where I am either the only cat or with another FIV positive cat. Please consider taking me into your heart and your home and give my foster mom a call at 910-262-8890. You will be so glad you did!! I am sponsored by Sharon Harmon and Barbara Blandine. Thank you! My name is Duke and I am one amazing dog. I am friendly, loveable and cuddly. I seem to do well with other animals and would settle nicely into any home. I have softer plush fur and a speck of blue in one of my eyes. I am mid-sized at about 50 pounds and just about a year old. Come meet me and fall in love. I won t be homeless long, so please hurry! If you d like to know more about me or would like to inquire about the adoption process, please call 910-392-0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. I am sponsored by Jacqueline and Netop in loving memory of Tom Grady. I m Ace and I have some Flat Coated Retriever and Basset Hound in me, but probably a few other breeds, too. Either way, I m a happy boy! I am only 8-months-old and weigh 20 pounds. I enjoy meeting new people and playing with other dogs. I m looking for a family to call my very own. I m completely vetted and have my bags packed! Call RescueConnect at 910-352-5150. Sponsored in loving memory of Roxy.

I weigh about 8 to 10 pounds and I am super adorable. You may think I m a senior at 9-years of age but did you know that the smaller a dog is, the later in life they become seniors? I am really friendly and have never met a stranger. I do well with cats, dogs and older kids. I am also house-trained and easy-going. I am ready to pack my bags and move in. All you need is love...and a dog...and I hope you ll let me be that dog! Come see me at Petco on weekends. My name is Summer and I am a wonderful dog. I had seven puppies who have all gone on to be adopted. I am so proud. I would love to find my very own home someday, too. I do well with other animals and I have the sweetest disposition. My name is Trix and I am a 4-year-old black Lab mix. I am super playful and full of life. I love people and other dogs, too. I have lived the last 4-years of my life in a dog pen outside so I will need someone willing to teach me some house manners. I am cratetrained and really smart, though. I LOVE LIFE and I am such a happy boy even though I am homeless. I run and jump and turn circles, just happy to be free. Fortunately, I am super healthy, but I am a big boy who weighs about 75 pounds. My name is Kallie and I am a 1-year-old Yellow Labrador. I was adopted as a puppy and returned when my family moved away. I really need a permanent, committed family who will love me FOREVER! I am playful, friendly, and really loveable. Since I am a year old, I am still pretty active and playful. I would need an active family and a fenced in yard. Come see me at Petco every weekend. P.O. I walk well on a leash, but need to have a fenced yard so I can run and play freely. My parents lived in a salvage yard and that is where I was born. Sadly, my puppyhood was not in a home with a family so I was not socialized with people until coming into foster. I am shy and fearful of new people so I would do best with kids over 10-years of age. I m looking for a family who has the time and patience to continue working on my socialization and to help me overcome my insecurities. Once you get to know me, you will see how sweet and affectionate I can be. I love playing with other dogs and will need to have at least one, if not more, canine siblings to set an example and help me continue to build up my confidence. I had a rough start in life, but I m ready to blossom with the love and encouragement from the right family. Could it be yours? Please contact my Echo Dogs foster mom at 910-200-4782 or learn more about me at www.echodogs.org. I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you! My name is Missy and I am a wonderful mother cat who raised 7 kittens. Many were not even mine, but when the shelter kept sitting them in front of me, I took them in with open paws. Who could turn an orphan kitten away? Now, several months later, all that is left is Bailey and myself. She is a solid black female who is now 7-months-old and we have been coming to adoption fairs ALL summer long. Every weekend we go back to our foster home empty handed. We don't have to be adopted together. It's ok if we are separated. We both need a home and can't afford to languish in foster care waiting to be adopted together. I am great with other cats and I love kids, but I don't like dogs at all. You may not even see Bailey in this picture, so look closely. Our black fur blends together and that makes it hard for us to get noticed. We are both super loveable and friendly. We love to snuggle and follow you around. Come see us at Petco on weekends. To know more about us or to inquire about the adoption process, call 910-392-0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. We are sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you!

Please call 910-253-1375 to adopt us! Cat Tails I had to get away from Lamar, so I ran to this shelter. Can you guess who I am? If you guessed Khloe you would be correct. I am a 17-month-old white kitty who is just trying to get out of a bad relationship. I love people way too much and that is why I am in this pickle. So please come rescue me and I promise you won t be disappointed. I will never give up on our relationship. I was named Agnew and my brother was Spiro. He got adopted because he was friendlier than I am. I miss him but I know I have to be strong and find my own home. I am shy at first, but will warm up once I get to know you. I am a petite, dark orange-marbled Tabby, who is only 18-months-old. I get along well with others, cats that is, so I can be your only or part of a set. Just like any pirate, I have waited patiently for somewhere to call my home. Someone dumped me at Petsmart and Cat Tails was nice enough to take me in. My name is Sinbad and I ve been adopted and returned a couple of times because no one will give me the time I need to adjust. Once I get used to new people and places, I am so very friendly. I am an 8-year-old, light gray Tabby boy. Bailey I m Aster, an unusual 3-year-old female orange Tabby who has been at the shelter since I was a kitten. I m extremely shy and it will take some time to win my confidence. But once I trust you, I m very affectionate, loving and want nothing more than to climb into your lap for some personal time. I would be better with another cat to help draw me out. Erika Bacardi If you want one of those umbrella drinks, you re looking for me, Bacardi. If you want something smooth and mellow, look for my brother, Bailey. We re 6-month-old brothers and most people can t even tell us apart. We are both part Siamese and have beautiful pale blue eyes. Like most brothers our age, we can get a little wild and crazy, but we ll keep you laughing! Earl I m Erika and this is my brother, Earl. We are very distinguished looking, black 7-month-old kitties. We used to forget to be friendly, but we re much better now. Sometimes Earl can be a little hard to get your hands on, but once you catch us, we both like to be petted and scratched and rubbed and cuddled. We had to lay low during October, so now we re really ready to go. 6622 Beach Drive SW, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469 www.cattails.org November 2016 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 17

New Hanover County Humane Society Friendly and social as can be, that s me, Sassy! Even if I ve just met you, I ll walk right up to you and invite you to stroke my soft, plush, gray fur. I m a 1-year-old girl who is already spayed and trained in the litterbox. I enjoy laying in patches of sunlight, sleeping in cozy cat beds, and I wouldn t turn down the chance to chase a toy around the room! I ll put a smile on your face, for sure. I m a solid-white beauty who is declawed and friendly to kids. How did a darling boy like me end up alone in a shelter? My name is George and I m the kind of feline that cat lovers just adore: I m laidback, purry, and quite happy to curl up beside you or on a cat bed while you go about your day. Then, when you re done with your work, I ll enjoy being rubbed by you as we relax in companionship. I m neutered and litterbox-trained, too! It s me, Joc, just hanging out in this cat bed until you arrive and take me home! I m a 2-yearold black and white neutered boy who is very sweet and very friendly. In fact, I get along with dogs, as long as they re nice to me. I d prefer to be the only cat in the household and of course I m litterbox-trained. Sheriff s Animal Services Unit My name is Archer (A344652) and I was brought in with another cat but he s already been adopted. Our former owner could no longer keep us. Isn t that sad? I m social, curious, and playful. Everyone here at the shelter can see it s obvious I will make someone a great companion. I m already fixed and vaccinated, so I m ready to move in with you today. I m a handsome fellow who is a 9-month-old Boxer/Rottie/Lab mix. I ve found myself at the shelter because my family was not able to keep me. I m a super friendly guy who loves to hang out, go for walks and get some scratches behind my ears! I ve been doing well with other dogs at the shelter, so if you already have a dog and are thinking about another pet, bring them to meet me! Please reference A345963. The staff have nicknamed me Bear (A346300)! I m a 9-yearold Shepherd/Retriever mix who was found as a stray. I m a super fellow - just as loveable as can be and I m so happy to get your attention, some snuggles and a treat never hurts either! Please come in and meet me - everyone here knows I m going to make someone a terrific forever friend! November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month. How gorgeous am I? I m a 5-year-old Labrador Retriever who was found on Robert Stephens Drive on the night of the hurricane. My name is Dottie and I am an adorable, plush grey and white kitten who is about 7-months-old. I am friendly and playful. I do really great with kids and other cats, but haven't had much exposure to dogs. Teenagers have it tough, so please consider a teenager when adopting. Most people who are looking for kittens are wanting them as young as they can possibly get - so they look at me and my littermates and say, "They are too old." Too old? I am only 6-months-old. People who want adults say, "I don't want a kitten who will tear my curtains up and then look at me and my littermates and say, "They are too young." Too young? I am 6-months-old. I pray there will be that special person who walks up, looks at me and says, "You are just right!" I am still hoping and waiting and growing lonelier each day. Being homeless is no fun. Please come see me at Petco on weekends and remember: the overlooked teenagers deserve a chance, too. To know more about me or inquire about the adoption process, call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. I am sponsored in honor of all the wonderful foster mommies and daddies who care for homeless animals. URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! Know what will turn this frown upside down? Your signature on my adoption papers! Hugs and kisses will also make me smile. My name is Jagger (A022852) and I m a 3 to 5-year-old brown and white Pitbull boy who weighs in at around 55 pounds. That s a nice size! Not too big and not too small. I was found as a stray and have been very friendly to all the people here. Wouldn t you like to give me a loving home? I can see us taking walks around the neighborhood and trips to the park or beach. Doesn t that sound good? Please drive over so we can make these dreams a reality. Hurry, though! You see, dogs arrive at the shelter every day and there s just not room enough for us all. If you need directions to the shelter, call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1484 or email jhorton@pendercountync.gov. The shelter is open 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, Noon to 4pm on Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. Can t wait to meet you! I am sponsored in honor of Kathleen M. Langone.

Grateful Thanks to Dick Parrott PawPrints Magazine lost a dear and beloved friend on Saturday, October 8, 2016. Dick Parrott s passing was a huge shock and has left quite a void in our lives. We are profoundly grateful to him for the years he devoted to us and to the magazine. He truly sought to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals in our community. And in this, he succeeded. Dick kindly agreed to be the cover photographer for PawPrints Magazine in June 2002. It was a commitment he kept for over fourteen years, until his last cover in September 2016. Over 170 cats and dogs (and one rabbit) passed through Dick's studio, sat under his lights, and received his patient attention. Each month, we drove out to Dick s studio to meet him and the cat or dog scheduled to appear on the next cover. Dick was usually playing a game of Solitaire on the computer when we entered (and occasionally, he won, much to his delight.) We would set up the studio together, giggling at Dick s jokes and witty puns, delivered with a twinkle in his eye. The photo shoot was usually filled with laughter, and Dick was occasionally bopped upon the head by a feather boa or something else we were vigorously shaking or tossing up in the air to get the animal s attention. He would give us a funny look at the impact, then keep on snapping photos. When the shoot was over, we would talk about our lives while Dick put the photos on a CD for us to take home. Afterward, he would walk us to our car, tell us to be safe, and we would say, Thanks, Dick, see you next month! It was a comfortable ritual we shared for over fourteen years, one now deeply cherished and missed. We are so thankful that our last photo shoot with him was one filled with laughter as we watched kittens playing and romping in a dollhouse. It was a very good day. After his passing, his wife, Nancy, told us that when he received the printed issue, he would glance at the cover, but then head straight to page 46, the Adoption Celebration, where photos of adopted animals are featured. Indeed, Dick told us many times how much he looked forward to our photo shoots, but that he also wished there wasn t a need for them. We hope he knows how much he contributed to his wish becoming, one day in the future, a reality. In an age when commitments come and go, Dick was rock-solid in his dedication to helping find homes for abandoned animals. He never let us or them down. He will always be part of PawPrints Magazine, and always in our hearts. Each of the diverse covers he shot for PawPrints are presented on the next four pages.

Thanks for the memories, Dick.

You know the saying that good things come in small packages? Well, that s definitely true about me! My name is Charlotte and I m a small Toy Poodle. I m not even 6 pounds but I am packed full of good things! You might notice that my photo shows white in my eyes. Don t worry about that. I don t! The canine ophthalmologist that the nice folks at Carolina Poodle Rescue took me to says that I have probably been blind from the first year of my life. I have progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) but that doesn t slow me down! The world is full of great sounds, interesting smells, and stuff to touch. I see with my heart, ears, nose, and toes! In fact, I was found as a stray so I had managed to keep myself safe until the Carolina Poodle Rescue could take me in. I m happy, affectionate and eager to play. I love going for walks. Does that surprise you? Well, then you don t know how much you can learn about a place by the way it smells. I would love to have someone who wants a companion for everything. Once I find someone, I never want to let them go! I m also an excellent snuggler. So after we go on a walk and find out what s going on in the world, I d love to come home and curl up on a lap for the evening. If you are looking for a small package of fun, I may be the perfect fit for you. I m 8-years-old which is the prime of life for a Toy Poodle. If you d like to meet me, please call 864-489-3559 or visit www.carolinapoodlerescue.org. A portion of the proceeds from every real estate closing goes to local animal rescues. SHARI CUTTING ABR, CNE REALTOR / BROKER I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you! Hello! I'm about 6-years-old and she s about 5-years-old and we re in overall good health. We must both be strictly indoor cats and must either be adopted singly or with another FeLV cat. Onslow County Animal Services Call 910-937-1164 or email animalcontrol@onslowcountync.gov to adopt! My name is Ingrid (33702655) and I m a 1½-year-old Terrier mix. I have been quite overwhelmed being homeless and in a shelter environment. It s a big, unfamiliar place for a little girl like me. I m eagerly waiting for someone to love. I ve already been spayed so I m ready to go home with you today! We re Atticus (31960904) and Buckley (31960929), two 5-month-old brothers who arrived at the shelter as terrified little boys. We were extremely fearful of human contact, but we deserved a chance. Since then, we ve been making great strides in our foster home and while we aren t quite lovebugs with the humans just yet, we love to play and cuddle each other. I m Atticus, an adorable orange Tabby and Buckley is a handsome black and white guy. We need a family who will be patient and gentle with us. We love to play with toys, nap on the windowsill and snuggle up together. We re feisty, young kittens who have come a very long way. Now it s time for us to continue our journey in a forever home! They call me Handsome Hound Rocco (31632808) and I m a happy, playful, intelligent pup. At 2½-years-old, I m still full of energy and would be ideal in a home with an active family where I will be able to stay busy. I love my squeaky ball and I m a fetch hound, which is something of an oddity. Everyone here adores my exuberant nature and hopes I ll find a family soon. Cooped up in a kennel is not where a young, active pup should be. If you can give me a home with a lot of love, attention and the busy lifestyle I need, please contact the shelter today! Howdy! I m a 2-year-old Pitbull mix named Chad (30116702). I m the longest canine resident at the shelter, and it s about time I found a home! I m a happy-go-lucky boy whose tail never stops wagging. I m playful and full of energy. I would love a home with a yard to run in and a human who will have fun with me. I m looking for a home without cats, and I m a great young pup who deserves a second chance at happiness. I m a senior Aussie Shepherd mix who did nothing to deserve a life on the streets, but after many long days of wandering on my own, I was brought in to the shelter. How anyone could leave a gentle lady behind is something no one here can understand. My name is Lolly (33735636) and I m approximately 7-years-old and looking for a home where I can spend my golden years surrounded by happiness. I m a calm and quiet girl. I m looking for a good snuggly space to nap and a human to love, and maybe a good spot to sun myself, too. Can you give me the life I deserve? I m a 2-year-old Terrier mix named Sabrina (33699782). My friends here at the shelter have given me the nickname Miss Scruffleupagus. They say I m a fun and happy young pup. If you are looking for a pint-sized companion, then I m your girl! 244 Georgetown Rd., Jacksonville, NC www.onslowcountync.gov/animalservices November 2016 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 29

Monday - Saturday 4:30am to 8pm Sunday 6:30am to 8pm Hi! My name is Sunshine. I am a 1½-year-old Calico girl who is very sweet and loving. I lived in a foster home before coming to the shelter and I was a great guest! My foster parents said I was a wonderful kitty and I got along superbly with the other three cats in the household. My foster dad was my favorite human; I slept in his lap while he watched TV. I also loved to play and explore. If there was something new in the house I just had to check it out. Now I m back at the shelter and I hope to find a forever home so I can start warming laps again! Oh yes, I am spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Please call Pender Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and let s arrange a meeting! I am the best friend you ve been searching for. Sponsored by Your Friends at Pender Humane Society s Furry Friend's Re-sale Shop. We Care!! What do you get when you cross a Basset and a Lab? You get us! My name is Cora and I act like a Basset all day long and so does my bestie, Chloe (who is a little taller than me)! We have the short stature like a Basset Hound and that wonderful personality of both a Basset and Lab! We are a perfectly matched set with a bit of a hard luck story. Both of us were adopted then dumped in a shelter when our humans no longer wanted us. We just don't understand what we did wrong! All we wanted is to love our humans and please them. So, we are now looking for a new home. We are very bonded at 5 to 9-years of age, so we really need to be adopted together. We love to play, love to walk, and we get along with other dogs! I get a little nervous with lots of people coming and going, but Chloe takes everything in stride. We are both very smart, obedient, house-trained and listen to commands our foster mom gives us. We ride well in the car and love everyone and every dog we have met so far. Wouldn t we be a great set of twins for your perfect loving home? If you are interested, please call Carolina Basset Hound Rescue at 888-909-2387 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com. Also, we are always short on foster homes! Please call 910-579-0407 to adopt us! R.A.C.E. (Rescue Animals Community Effort) Hi, my name is Daisy Mae and I am a true southern belle. I am a Chihuahua who is 3-years-old and weighs 7 pounds. I am a little timid but that will go away once I feel settled. My foster mom has been teaching me tricks. I do well with other dogs but very young children scare me. I do have heartworms but my treatment has started and R.A.C.E. will pay for the slow treatment method and provide monthly pills. Other than that, I am in perfect health. Please call if you are interested in loving me. I am a fine looking Boxer if I do say so myself. My name is Rudy and I was given to my rescue group because my owners could not keep me. Obviously, the rescue group saw the potential in me! I am 7-years-old and have been fully vetted. I was very glad when they told us I was heartworm negative. I am house-trained and like people and dogs but can not be around cats as they tempt me too much. I am a very happy and wiggly guy who just wants to have fun. Some say I am very affectionate and I think that's a compliment. Am I right? Come and meet me and I will show you! Hi there, my name is Audrey and I am the happiest girl on the planet. My goal in life is to have fun, fun, fun and then some more fun. Life is meant to live and I m going to love it to the fullest. I enjoy playing with other dogs, so if you have a playmate for me, that would be perfect. If not, we can take walks or go to the dog park. I am young, at approximately 1-year of age, I am completely vetted and I m ready for my new home. I only weigh 21 pounds fully grown, so we are not sure what combination of breeds that I am. Please call to adopt me. My name is Happy and I am a 1-year-old very happy little white Pomeranian. Even though I was born blind, I adjust very well and can maneuver through the house with just a little guidance. I am super sweet, I love other dogs and I am completely vetted. I am almost completely house-trained. If you are looking for a lap dog, I am the one. Please call about me today so we don t waste another second without each other. Hey, have you heard about the Cabarrus County Puppy Mill hoarding bust? That s where I came from and I am feeling very lucky to have come to R.A.C.E. along with my siblings. That was a horrible place and because of my lack of care, they had to pull all of my teeth but I can still eat well. My name is Charlene. I am a 10-year-old Miniature Apricot Poodle and I am as sweet as can be. Like my friend, Happy, I just want love and a lap to sit on. If you are looking for a senior dog, please consider me. Thank You! I m a very sweet 7-year-old Beagle named Shorty. I am a happy-go-lucky guy and I love other dogs. I get a little nervous around very young children (hence the reason for being in rescue) but I m fantastic with people. What I would really love to have is a new family who will walk me a lot as I weigh about 15 pounds more than I should. If you love to walk on the beach, or anywhere really, that's for me. Of course, I will also have to be kept on my diet but should be slim and suave in no time. P.O. Box 3370, Shallotte, NC 28459 www.raceshelter.org November 2016 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 37

Please call 910-457-6340 to adopt us! I know you have seen me in here before and I don't know why I'm still at SOAR! I'm Oliver. My two brothers and I came to SOAR as tiny kittens - that was almost 3 years ago! For some reason, they got adopted but I never have. I just don't understand why! I am always on my best behavior. I don't mind if you pick me up and I love to talk. I'm a sweet boy and I live in the open room with other cats - so if you give me time and introduce me to another cat the correct way - I would be ok. But if you just want me to be your one and only kitty, that would be fine, too. Hello, I m Minion! I got my name because I was tiny when I first came to SOAR. That was 1 year ago. A lady saw me get thrown out of a car window on the highway! Thank goodness she took care of me until I was able to come to SOAR! As you can see, I have grown into a very handsome boy. I m super-sweet and have a purr that goes on for days! I do ok with other cats. In fact, I had a feral kitten living with me in my cat kennel for awhile until she got adopted! I do get scared and defensive around dogs, so I should live in a dog-free household. Let s meet! SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) I may be sitting here at the animal rescue in Southport - but you can tell by my smile that I'm not gonna let it get me down!! I'm Oakley, a 3½-year-old Lab mix who weighs in at about 35 pounds. They say I'm pretty chilled and I know commands such as sit and shake. I walk well on a leash, unless I see a squirrel and then I can pull like a sled dog! But who wouldn t? Please come by to meet me and say Hi! Wanna play? How about run? How about play AND run? My name is Lexi and I m a sweet girl who was found wandering around Holden Beach. I d love a fenced yard to run and play in, not to mention some long walks or runs on the beach! I turned 2-years-old in September and I am spayed, vaccinated and ready to go! I am also an American Staffordshire Terrier mix, weighing in at about 40 pounds. Adopt me and let s enjoy a fun, happy and loving life together! I m Emma and I arrived at the shelter with my friend Trixie after the death of our person. Trixie recently found a new family and I m hoping the same will happen for me! She and I got along great, so if you have a dog who needs a best friend, please bring him or her out to the shelter to meet me! I m a Mastiff/Lab mix, about 65 pounds and 3-years-old. I d love a fenced-in yard for playtime. See you soon! What a story I have! I'm Minnie and I came to SOAR from Duplin County Rescue where I was abandoned with my seven kittens. And to top it off - they found out I am FIV positive. Luckily my kittens were fine - but that left me with no place to live. Thankfully, the wonderful people at SOAR had just adopted out 2 of their FIV cats, so that opened up a space for ME! I'm a sweet girl, a little over 2-years-old, vaccinated and spayed. I have to live indoors only and either be adopted by myself or with another FIV cat. Other than that - I have no restrictions! 3376 St. Charles Place Southport, NC 28461 www.soar-nc.org November 2016 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 39

Canines for Service launched a Power of 10 fundraising campaign on September 1, 2016. The goal of the 100-day initiative is to raise $60,000 the cost to train and partner two service dogs. Service dogs change a persons life with the gift of independence. The Power of 10 starts with 10 supporters donating 10 dollars each to Canines for Service. They, in turn, ask ten of their friends to do the same, who then ask ten more friends, creating a powerful wave of support and fundraising dollars. Canines for Service operates from a 5,000 sq. ft. of space on Old Dairy Road. The long awaited expansion has provided the opportunity to initiate a Veterans internship program teaching Veterans new job skills learning how to train service dogs for Veterans with disabilities. In the upcoming months, the program will expand again to offer a fee based learning opportunity for service dog training. Since bringing the Canines for Veterans program back to Wilmington in June 2015, we had been stretched to maximum capacity with little room for service dog training or to increase the number of dogs in training, offer more pet therapy classes and the aspects of daily business, says Rick Hairston, President and CEO. Now, the service dog training has the much needed space to achieve our mission, we can bring more dogs in to train and have already grown with the intern program. For more information, please call 910-362-8181, send an email to phairston@caninesforservice.org, or visit www.caninesforservice.org/powerrof10. I have a sweet and loveable personality and I enjoy being with human kids, too. I weigh about 50 pounds, am 3-years-old, and I m already neutered. Won t you drive over and get to know me? But please hurry! You see, dogs arrive every day and there s just not enough room for us all. The shelter is open 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, Noon to 4pm on Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. For driving directions or more info, call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1484 or email jhorton@pendercountync.gov. My shelter pals will be happy to tell you what a great addition to the family I would be! I am sponsored by the Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar in Carolina Beach. Thank you!

Breed Rescues We are all from different Breed Rescues. Please read our stories! GREAT DANE FRIENDS OF RUFF LOVE My name is Duke and I'm a 6 to 7-year-old boy who s looking for a forever home. My former owner surrendered me to a shelter when he was diagnosed with cancer and then the nice people at Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love rescued me when I ran out of time. I am very active and enjoy playing outside. I love to lounge on the couch, and my foster mom thinks that if I was able to get up on the bed, I would certainly lounge there, too. I love to follow her from room to room as I just want to be with people all of the time! I do enjoy being with other dogs of all sizes but I don t do well with cats. I would prefer to live in a home with no cats, or where the cats are kept separate from the dogs. My foster mom says I m a bit overweight and heartworm positive. But I m undergoing treatment and slowly losing weight, and then I can go to my forever home! I have sad, puppy dog eyes that tug at her heart strings. I hope that I can find a forever home soon where I will be loved and cherished the way that my foster mom says I deserve! Please send an email to GDFRL at greatdanefriend@yahoo.com for an adoption application, call 704-584-9257 or visit www.greatdanefriends.com. At about 10-years-old, I was dumped at a shelter when my previous human found out I had heartworms and he asked for me to be put to sleep. I had a terribly infected toe that had to be amputated, so my foot feels so much better. I don't have heartworms anymore either! I do have to stay on medicine for an eye condition. My name is Jackson and I loved my foster home, but not the small dogs there, so I'm back at daycare and getting sad that I'm not in a home. To foster or adopt me, call 910-232-5910 or www.tarheelweimrescue.org. MERIT PIT BULL FOUNDATION My name is Peach and I couldn't be any sweeter! I am house-trained, wonderful on a leash, crate-trained and know basic commands. I love nap time and cuddling is one of my favorite things. I enjoy playing with other dogs and warm up to cats with a proper introduction. I'm happy to be by your side no matter what - a walk, a car ride, or night in on the sofa! For explanation of our adoption process, application, and fees please visit www.meritpitbullfoundation.com, email info@mpbf.org or call 336-618-PITT. Small Dog Alert! How cute am I? My name is Lexi and I m a 2-year-old Chihuahua girl who weighs in at just under 9 pounds. Which is a good thing for you because I do like to be held (just check out my photo for proof.) In fact, my friends at the shelter have never heard me bark, but I will cry if I desire to be picked up and held. All I want in this world is for people to cuddle me and love me. I am vaccinated and spayed, and I m currently undergoing heartworm treatment. But don t worry about that, the shelter is taking care of my treatment at no cost to my new family. Won t you come over and meet me? I ll be very happy to show you just how well I fit in your arms. Call Pender Humane Society at 910-259- 7022 if you need driving directions or more info. I am sponsored by Netop and Jackie in loving memory of Dick Parrott. Hello! I m a very friendly Tabby boy named Tootsie! At just 3-yearsold, I came to C.A.R.E. with a broken foot. Now that I m fully healed and out of my cast, I m running around the hospital greeting EVERYONE - people, other cats, and even dogs! I have a very hearty appetite and I absolutely LOVE getting head rubs from anyone and everyone. I am definitely an affectionate cat and I ll be sure to swoon my way into your heart! Please call my friends at 910-256-2624 or email care@aahpcr.com for more information or to submit an application for my adoption. I am sponsored by Atlantic Animal Hospital who supports Coastal Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.). November 2016 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 47
