Between the Bookends: Roam by Alan Lazar is a large print novel with music, which features a sound track written by the author. Newly married Katey and Don are already experiencing a rough patch when Don carelessly allow their beagle/poodle pup to wander out without a leash. Roam celebrates and confirms the unbreakable bond between humans and their pets. Garfield, by Allan Peskin, is a biography of President James A. Garfield but also an account of the Gilded Age of American politics. It is a success story of the last of the log cabin presidents. If you ve read Candice Millard s more recent Destiny of the Republic, about Garfield s assassination, you ll appreciate this biography as background. From Publishers Weekly: This is a brilliant and skillful portrait of a man of many parts, of the political and social landscape of the time. Mann Missive Mayflower Apartment Moves. Folks who have made moves into independent living apartments since our last listing: Horace and Gretchen Hegg From Hudson IA to Buckley #301 Vicki Sopher From Chicago to Pearson #206 Larry Gorsuch From Beebe to Montgomery #7 Nancy Brown From Ames to Pearson #205 (temporary until Montgomery #8 is remodeled) Roberta Atwell From Grinnell home to Altemeier #206 New Buckley Kitchen Dish Washer. As you likely know by now, our 22-year old kitchen dish washer is on its last legs. We have solicited gift support to be able to replace it with a modern machine that is greenfriendly, saving water, detergent, and utilities. The installed cost of the new Dish Washer will be $36,000. As of today, we have received 101 gifts, totaling $30,300. Thank you for your support. We look forward to being able to purchase and install the Dish Washer very soon. If you are interested in helping, you may make your check payable to The Mayflower Community, noting Dish Washer in the memo line, and sending it to 616 Broad Street, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Your consideration is appreciated. Night Lights Who Flips the Switch? From time to time, residents wonder about which lights to shut off at night. Here is a simple rule: If the light is in a common area, and you have not turned it on, then you do not need to turn it off. Every evening, our staff makes rounds in our five apartment buildings, our Buckley Dining Room, and Beebe Assisted Living, locking up and turning off lights. In some areas, the night lights are on a timer and come on automatically at a pre-set time. House Demolitions. You may have noted that we now have two less houses on our campus. We have demolished homes at 514 Park Street and 603 Broad Street that we owned. Neither was appropriate for renting, so we decided to remove the attractive nuances, rather than invest the significant funds necessary to bring them up to rentable condition. I have been asked if the homes were removed to make way for new Mayflower buildings. Simply: No. There are no plans at this time to build on either site. Senior Living and Healthcare (continued.). A senior living community (Remember, some folks like to call this model, a CCRC, Continuing Care Retirement Community. ) offers a very critical feature: Socialization. This is vital for feelings of well-being AND for longevity. A team of researchers from University College, London recently reported findings from a 6,500-adult study about loneliness. (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, May 19, 2013). They found that older people who had low contact with others were more likely to die than those who reported feeling lonely but had higher contact with others. Their conclusion: Although both isolation and loneliness impair quality of life and well-being, efforts to reduce isolation are likely to be more relevant to mortality. When you live at Mayflower, you can t help but have healthy contacts with others! Bob Mann Executive Director (bmann@mayflowerhomes.com) Remember Mayflower in your will
