Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America Draft Test Purpose The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America Draft Test is a series of exercises designed to develop and demonstrate the natural abilities of Bernese Mountain Dogs in a working capacity involving hauling. The Bernese Mountain Dog has historically functioned as a draft dog in various capacities, and performance of these exercises is intended to demonstrate skills resulting from both inherent ability and training which are applicable to realistic work situations. Efficiency in accomplishment of tasks is essential. It is also desirable that the dog show willingness and enjoyment of his work in a combination of controlled teamwork with his handler and natural independence. Regulations Entrants are responsible for obtaining the BMDCA Draft Test Regulations (July 2011 Edition) and being familiar with them. Draft test regulations are available online: http://bmdca.org/draft. These are All Eligible Dogs draft tests in accordance with current BMDCA Draft Regulations, Chapter 3, Section 1, Paragraph B (with preference given to Bernese Mountain Dogs). The BMDCA and the DWC take dog aggression very seriously and have zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior on the part of dogs/owners and/or handlers. For a copy of the Misconduct Disciplinary Procedure, go to http://bmdca.org/draft/bmdca_draft_discipline.php By participating in or attending this test, you understand and agree to the terms of the Misconduct Disciplinary Procedure. This procedure is a clarification of the Discipline Section of the BMDCA Draft Regulations. Awards All participating teams will receive a suitable keepsake. Qualifying teams will receive a rosette. Teams qualifying in a BMDCNV test for the first time will receive a classic wooden contoured silhouette of a Bernese Mountain Dog pulling a cart. Qualifying teams who have previously qualified will receive a special trophy. There will be an award given to the oldest qualifying BMD on each day. Attention Exhibitors Important Information Handlers must provide their own rigs, harnesses, and tie downs or other means of securing a load on their particular draft rig. Handlers must provide their own weights for the freight haul. Weight will be verified via scale at the test site. Freight haul weight loads: In Novice Draft, the weight required is 20 lbs. In Open Draft, the weight required is the weight of the dog rounded down to the nearest 10 lbs; 60 lbs minimum. In Novice Brace Draft, the weight required is 40 lbs per team. In Open Brace Draft, the weight required is the sum of the Open weight of each dog. Entered dogs must be 24 months old or older on the day of the Draft Test. Each Open or Open Brace entry, or possible move-up to Open or Open Brace, must include a veterinary certificate stating the dog s name and weight. This certificate must be dated within 60 days prior to the date of the test. Bitches in season are not permitted to compete. Entry Fees shall be refunded upon receipt of a veterinary certificate stating an entered bitch is in season at the time of the Draft Test. The two dogs of a brace team need not be owned by the same person or by the handler. Class Entry Details The entry fee is $35 per team. The brace entry fee is $35 per two-dog team. For brace entries, please complete an entry form for each dog and staple together. Entry is limited to 24 teams per day. The following classes are offered: Novice, Novice Brace, Open, and Open Brace. Brace teams may be grouped with the appropriate level single teams for group exercises. If more than 24 entries are received, they will be prioritized per the following order: 1. Untitled Bernese Mountain Dogs 2. Titled Bernese Mountain Dogs 3. Untitled other dogs 4. Titled other dog (Note that titled means titled in the entered class) A random draw will be held for each group including and following the one that causes the total entry in excess of the Test limit. Entrants must notify the Draft Test Secretary if a dog has earned a title in the entered class, including if the title is earned after the entry has been submitted. Teams entered in a class in which they have already earned the advanced level title will be drawn after teams without the advanced level title in that class. Alternates will also be drawn and may compete if a spot becomes available. Entry fees shall not be refunded in the event the dog is absent, disqualified, excused by Veterinarian or Judge or barred from competition by the Show Committee. If because of riots, civil disturbances, or other acts beyond the control of the Show Committee it is impossible to open or to complete the test, no refund of entry fee will be made. Extreme weather conditions must be considered for the health and safety of the dogs, exhibitors, officials, and spectators and are of paramount importance. In the event it is necessary to cancel or stop the test before completion, no refund of entry fee will be made. A handler may withdraw a dog from a draft test for medical reasons. Entry fees shall be refunded upon receipt of a signed veterinarian's certificate stating the reason for withdrawal (postmarked mail prior to the test date is acceptable); however, it is requested that the Test Secretary is notified as soon as possible so an alternate can be contacted.
