Meeting called to order at 7:05pm SECRETARY S REPORT FEBRUARY GENERAL MEETING Wednesday, February20, 2019 Gorats Steak House 4917 Center St. Omaha, NE 68144 Motion made to made by Jenni Toebben to approve the minutes of the Wednesday, January 16, 2019, General Meeting. Seconded by Sue Volkmer. Motion carried. Results of Officers and Board Election Ron Weaks, Vice President; Barb Hill, Treasurer. Shelly Rehmeier and Norine Neiman, NKC Board. Report of the President Tim Bourke; The year 2018 is a year that truly humbles me. We had an All- Breed Dog Show, Obedience Trial and Rally, two separate AKC Scent Work Event weekends, a Tracking Test, and Barn Hunts. In addition, we had several fund-raising events at both the dog show and the tracking test. These were, from most often a worker, observer or participant point of view, smoothly run quality events. These events also generated money for the treasury. To help meet the qualifications for a Nebraska Non-Profit Corporation, the 2019 AKC Scent Work Event will donate 20% of the profit from the event to the Omaha Police K-9 Unit Foundation. The Board of Directors makes it a relatively easy task to be President. I look forward to another eventful and prosperous year in 2019. October Discussion on Canine Ophthalmology presented by Dr. Tonya McIlnay. November Holiday Party at Tussey s. December No meeting. March 2019 General Membership meeting will be at Lansky s, 4601 S. 50 th Street, Omaha, NE at 7pm. Report of the Secretary Barb Ihle; Updated membership on recent changes to both the AKC Tracking and Obedience Regulations. Report of the Treasurer Barb Hill; Presented 2018 Annual Financial Report. Each meeting attendee was provided a copy of the Annual Treasurer s Report on the back of their meeting Agenda. Motion carried to file the Treasurer s annual report for audit. Annual Committee Chair Reports Education - Dona Rosales; Absent Training Director - Barb Hill; Liz Bradbury is doing most of the scheduling and coordination for Conformation and should be given the title of Training Director. In addition, Dianne Krantz, Medora Harper and John Smith are helping with the weekly Monday training offered by NKC currently being held at Companion Dog Club. Tracking - Shelly Rehmeier; The 2018 Tracking Test was held November 11, 2018 at Chalco Hills Recreation Area, Omaha, NE. Judges were Jane Jones and Inge Suchanek. Total entries were 2 TD s, 5 TDX s and 6 TDX Alternates. Both TD dogs passed (Wirehaired Pointing Griffon and Golden Retriever). We had one TDX pass. This was a Pembroke Welsh Corgi who not only got his TDX but also earned his 2

Champion Tracker Title. In my 11 years of doing the Tracking Test, this is the first dog to get a CT at our Test. This year we raised $285.00 with our raffle. We also received money donations from Gerianne Darnell and Deb Lewis. Income was $1,045.00. Expenses were $960.96. We made $84.04. I would like to thank Jan Hague for taking such good care of our judges and helping with hospitality. Barb Ihle was in charge of hospitality at the Test. Food was donated by Barb & Chris Ihle, Sue Volkmer, Medora Harper, Jan Hague, Sharon Brewer and Shelly Rehmeier. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers: Dawn Thrapp, Annie Kelley, Jan Hague, Barb & Chris Ihle, Sue Volkmer, Sharon Brewer, Mary Kramer, Terese Pirl, Elizabeth Stone, Irina & John Harrington, Barbara Hill, Joe Bradley, Tim & Sharon Bourke and Ron Weaks. A special thank you to Joe Bradley who took pictures at the test and posted them to the NKC website. Raffle donators were: Sue Torpy, Sharon Dowell (Two Tails Bakery), Barb & Chris Ihle, Sue Volkmer, Christy Brandt, Tim & Sharon Bourke, Shelly Rehmeier, Jeannie Works, Photography by Joe Bradley, Alycia Noble, Annie Kelley and Norine Neiman. Thanks to everyone who donated and volunteered. AKC Scent Work - Sue Volkmer We had two Scent Work events in 2018: one in July and one in December. Our July trials were held at Sunshine Obedience School in Council Bluffs, Iowa on July 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th. Affordable venues big enough for holding dog events are limited in the immediate Omaha area. This is a wonderful facility and we are lucky that Gerianne Darnell is willing to rent her facility to local dog clubs for many dog events throughout the year. All three trials filled, resulting a total of 375 runs (125 runs per day) over four elements: containers, interiors, exteriors, and buried. Our judge was Chris Eblen from Iowa. This was her first trial as a judge. She did a wonderful job of setting fair passable courses for the dogs. She even took extra time to problem-solve when dogs struggled the first day to pass the dreaded buried runs. As a result, the dogs were much more successful the next two trials. The overall pass rate for the three trials was approximately 76%. A profit of approximately $2,500.00 was made from this event. The weather was quite warm with temperatures in the 90 s. Many volunteers helped our first Scent Work trial run smoothly and we greatly appreciate those volunteers, both club members and nonmembers, for their work over long days to keep the trial moving. Joe Bradley, our resident photographer, was there taking pictures of all the dogs. Joe provides photographs to the handlers free of charge. Getting good pictures of your dog competing is hard and we very much appreciate Joe providing this perk to our entrants. Our December trials were held at Companion Dog Club in Omaha, Nebraska on December 8 th and 9th. Thank you to Companion for renting their facility to us. The two trials were one run short of a full trial with 249 runs over three elements: handler discrimination, containers and interiors. Our judge was Candy Henley from Iowa. Candy did a great job setting the courses and it was fun to watch the dogs search our Winter Wonderland-themed items during the interior element searches. The overall pass rate was approximately 64% and the trials brought in a profit of approximately $1,800.00. Not surprising the weather was cold, but the trial ran smoothly because we had awesome club members and volunteers who worked the trials. Once again, Joe Bradley was there taking pictures of the dogs and handlers as they worked the courses. Thanks Joe!!! The most indispensable person at these trials is the Secretary. I want to extent a huge thank you to Norine Neiman for being the Trial Secretary for all our Scent Work trials in 2018. She interacts with AKC, writes and sends out the premium, receives all the entries, confirms all the entries, keeps the wait list, produces the judging program and run orders, handles all the move ups through the trials, and prints all the results and placements, figures out the winners of the High in Trial awards, and keeps us all in line. We could not host these events without her!!! Thank you Norine!!!!! Scent Work trials require a lot stuff for the dogs to search in the interior and exterior searches. Thanks to all those who provided their personal items for these searches. I would like to add a personal thank you to the club members who stepped up in my absence to organize and run the trial each day during the December trials: Shelly Rehmeier, Ron Weaks, and Joe Bradley. A special thank you also goes to Sharon Dowell who became the De facto Trial Chair for the December trials and handled most of the comments received from the entrants during the trials and made sure the search areas were the correct size, etc. for judge. Thank you, Sharon,!!! 3

Barn Hunt Activities - Ron Weaks; The weekend of September 15 th and 16 th, 2018, Nebraska Kennel Club held its fifth successful Barn Hunt with Instinct, Novice and Open classes being offered. Candy Henley and Liz Hawkins were our judges. We had 216 runs, up 25 runs over 2017. We had 117 qualifying funs with a pass rate of 53.24%. Instinct: 30 runs, down 19 runs over 2017. Novice: 82 runs, up 18% over 2017. Open: 25 runs, down 7% over 2017. Senior: 17 runs, down 2% versus 2017. Master: 26 runs, same as 2017. Crazy 8 s: 49 runs, a new class for 2018. Nebraska Kennel Club netted about $1,900.00 with the trial and practice combined. Media Director - Joe Bradley; Administrated the NKC website, provided photography, multimedia and technical logistics support at NKC events throughout the year. Event Planning - Sue Volkmer; We had two events in 2018: the summer picnic in June and Christmas movie night in December. Our summer picnic was help on June 20 th at club members Jenni Toebben s home. Approximately 10 people attended. We enjoyed wonderful dishes brought by the attending membership. We had a couple of non-members attending and they have since joined the Club. Thank you to Jenni for opening her home to us. Our Christmas movie night as was at the home of Club members Barb and Chris Ihle. Approximately 10 people attended this event. Food and drink were brought by the attendees. Thanks to the Ihle s for hosting this event. Starting March 1, 2019, Christy Brandt will be taking over as Event Chair. I m looking forward to what fun things she has in store for us. Legislative Liaison Sandy Orr; Monitored the legislative issues at the local and state levels and pass along anything that is relevant. AKC sends out information regarding national and state legislative issues that require attention which she passes along when received. We must remain diligent. Get to know your legislators local, state and federal. Keep in touch. AKC has some suggestions on how to make sure legislators are informed about our breeds. The NAIA (National Animal Interest Alliance) helps to fight legislation all over the country. Please support them by sending donations to help keep up the fight so we can continue to keep our pets. ~Sandy Orr Membership Alycia Noble; We had 7 new members in 2018. Karen Tesarek, Irina Harrington, Nina Gottsch, Kalli Appunn, Sharon Dowell and Stephanie and Andrew Edson. Growler Editor - Sharon Bourke; There were 12 issues of the NKC Growlers Gazette published in 2018, totaling 92 pages. It was published every month in 2018. The Growler is distributed via email, and eight members receive the Growler via US Mail. It can also be found on the NKC website. Printing and postage costs, in the amount of $147.36, were donated by the Editor, Sharon Bourke. Membership Application/s Second reading of Jr. Member Amalie Miller. Sasquatch Harper s Homer Bassett Hound Owner: Medora Harper Certified as an AKC FIT DOG Congratulations!! ---Submitted by Medora Harper The American Kennel Club Announces AKC FIT DOG CLUBS The American Kennel Club, the world s largest dog registry and leading advocate for dogs and their owner, announces an expansion of its FIT DOG program by recognizing clubs and organizations that provide canine fitness classes and organized canine walks as AKC FIT DOG clubs. To become an AKC FIT DOG Club, AKC clubs, independent dog training schools and other dog-related organizations must hold at least four group fitness walks per year or hold regularly scheduled canine fitness classes. Organizations meeting this level of activity may apply for a free AKC FIT DOG club banner which includes the name of the organization. Organized canine walks are a way for AKC clubs to provide a fund and healthy activity for their local dog community, said Doug Ljungren, Executive Vice President for AKC Sports and Events. In the process, clubs gain the opportunity engage with new dog owners who may wish to join their club. The AKC FIT DOG club program provides an option if your club is seeking new members. ---Portion of a February 25, 2019, AKC Press Release Submitted by Medora Harper, AKC Delegate 8
