FAERIE GLEN BULLETIN Summer Edition 2018 page 4 & 5 TAKING CARE OF YOUR HEARING page 9 AWARENESS ACTIVITIES page 15 MOUTH WATERING RECIPES by Suki Lock It is that time of year. Trees with shiny baubles are in every shop, along with specials and Christmas offers. More than the shopping and presents and big meals, it is also the longest school holiday of the year, and therefore many of us take the time to go on a family holiday. And as wonderful as the prospects of warm days and sandy beaches are, a holiday with children takes planning and preparation, no matter how you travel. To fly or not to fly... Don t be afraid to go on holiday with your kids, is the advice of Veronica van Zyl, mom of two and owner of CY Travel in Cape Town. Flying to reach your destination with your kids may seem daunting, but worth it to spend time together as a family. Many people have been in the same situation and understand when kids get a bit unsettled on a trip kids will be kids, Veronica says. This doesn t mean that you should let them run riot, but constantly hushing or scolding can be even more annoying than noisy kids. Have some activities prepared have colouring books and crayons available, or play card games like snap or Uno. Teach older kids to knit or make felt finger puppets. Bring story books along to read or look at pictures. And, in our electronic world, you can always have a favourite movie or a few games on a portable device. Distract them, because let s face it, hours and hours on a plane is not exciting, not for grownups and definitely not for children. Most airlines are quite clued up and ready for kids on longer flights, says Veronica. Don t rely on the airline personnel to keep your children entertained, but don t be afraid to ask for help if you need a moment, especially when travelling alone. Many people also are not aware that airlines often have special meals for kids available, but you do have to request them. Even if you are not planning on eating on a domestic flight, make sure you have something for your kids. Sucking on a lollipop or drinking a cool drink, especially during takeoff and landing, will help to protect your kids ears from the changes in pressure. For babies, feed them during this time, as sore ears will definitely not help to keep your child calm on the flight. TRAVELS with kids The long and winding road trip... If you are travelling by car, you do not have to worry about the reaction of strangers to your brood, but keeping kids entertained is still helpful and safer. It is important that the driver of the car can remain focussed. If needed, rather pull over in a safe spot to address any issues, do not try to drive and change a DVD for example. Try to have fun, and play a few games along the way. I spy with my little eye is an old favourite, but Veronica has some ideas on how to spice things up. It s good to keep children s attention outside of the car, she says. Instead of just giving your kids a bag of sweets to keep them quiet, interact with them. Have some small snacks handy to dish out as a reward. This means that kids are not only more motivated to play along, but it also helps you to regulate their sugar intake. Ask them to look for an object like a wind pump, a red car, or a cow and when they spot one they get a treat. Chat about it for a bit, (what does a wind pump do, what is it made of etc.) and then select a new object to find. And if you spot it first yourself, you can have a treat too. Another game is to guess the make and model of the next car that comes toward you. The first person to correctly identify the car gets a point. It s a careful balancing act you want to answer first, but you also want to be right, so holding out for the right moment can be quite exciting. But games are not for everyone, so also consider sing-along CDs, books and small toys. Being in a confined space for extended periods of time can get the better of most people, and kids will test your patience. Make sure you take regular breaks, at least every two hours, but more often if possible. If you have far to travel, staying over along the way is the best solution. Make the trip part of the holiday. Visit a museum in the small town you are driving through, or go have a look at that big post box or plinthed steam train. Take pictures; make memories. It is also important for you to stay positive and calm, as the more stressed you get, the more likely your children are to get stressed....continues on page 3

Faerie Glen Bulletin 03...continued from page 1 - HAPPY SUMMER HOLIDAY TRAVELS WITH KIDS Out at sea A popular choice is to take a boat cruise, whether a trip to nowhere or a specific destination. Many cruises allow children to share your cabin for free, you only need to pay port charges, but make sure you check with your travel agent. Most cruise boats also have kiddie s facilities available (usually from age three), where you can have your children looked after while you go and enjoy a show or relax on deck. There are also medical facilities on the boat, so in the case you or your kids feel queasy, go ask for help. The advantage of a cruise is of course the size of the boat, and all the activities available. Still, pack a book or small puzzles for your kids for those times you might want to spend a few more minutes in bed after a late night. Going nowhere slowly When not possible to take a vacation, try to still have a few days with your kids over this time. Go see a movie together, or have a picnic in the park. Pretend you are tourists in your own city and go visit a few of the attractions. It is so easy to focus on the break we need, that we sometimes forget that the best part of the holiday for our children often is that they get to spend some time with us. Holiday camps and kids clubs are great tools, but don t forget that our children have been looking forward to the holiday as well. And part of what they look forward to is spending time with us, says Veronica. This doesn t mean that you can t do the things you would like to do, but make sure you schedule time and activities for your whole family to enjoy. Veronica also recommends doing something at the start of the day that your children will enjoy. If you have already done their thing you can remind them of that, where if the family activity is only later, you will have to listen to many how much longer before questions beforehand. Going on an international trip? A few things to keep in mind If you are planning on leaving the country for your holiday, make sure that you have the right documentation for your children in place. Apart from their own passports, you are likely to need unabridged birth certificates with you for your children, even if both parents are travelling with them. Also confirm whether you need visas for the country you are travelling to. If only one parent is travelling abroad with the kids, the other parent as stated on the birth certificate will have to give written permission, and you will need certified copies of their ID. But it is best to check with a travel agent when you are planning your trip to confirm what the current legislation is. What matters most Whether you are travelling near or far or not at all, remember that this holiday season is a time to reflect on the past and recharge for the coming year. Being together as a family and reminding ourselves why we love each other, warts and all, is the best gift we can give. Enjoy your family, and travel safe. Find some activities for the kids on page 9

04 Summer Edition 2018 Mobile Audio Devices and... Hearing loss is defined as a partial or total inability to hear. It can occur in one or both ears and is usually caused by health changes or a combination of factors. Risk factors that can contribute to hearing loss include: Viral and bacterial infections such as meningitis, measles or mumps Certain medications: Chemo therapy- or tuberculosis treatment Excessive noise exposure Middle ear infection Head trauma Genetic contribution There are three types of hearing loss. 1. A conductive loss, where the origin of the loss lies in the outerand/or middle ear and can generally be treated medically. (E.g. middle ear infection) 2. A sensorineural loss, where the origin of the hearing loss lies in the inner ear; in the auditory nerve or in the brain; or in a combination of the three. 3. Lastly a combination of the two may also occur, resulting in a mixed hearing loss. A hearing loss because of excessive exposure to noise is termed a Noise Induced Hearing Loss and is sensorineural in nature. Sensorineural hearing loss cannot be cured medically and is irreversible and permanent. The exposure to noise can be once off or over an extended period and may have a number of different origins. There is a trend of increased use of mobile audio devices, for example mobile phones connected to earphones, or MP3 players. With technology becoming vastly accessible, the impact on our quality of life and health risks must be assessed. Listening to loud music on your earphones or head set can cause a permanent hearing loss. Currently, as audiologists and as parents we should be most concerned about extended exposure to noise in the form of music listened to through personal audio devices or mobile audio devices. More and more children and adolescents have access to mobile audio devices in the form of MP3 players such as ipods and are spending extended hours listening to music through these devices. Recent studies show that there is an increasing number of children aged between 6 and 19 who suffer from a noise induced hearing loss because of using ear phones while listening to music at a high volume. Current technology allows for hours of uninterrupted listening and mobile audio devices can store thousands of songs per device and their battery life is vast in comparison to those of older technology devices. It appears that the way in which people listen to their mobile audio devices may also influence the degree of the hearing loss, with insert earphones causing more damage than headphones that fit over the entire ear. The reason for this may be that the earbuds play music directly into the ear canal and are not able to impede enough of the background environmental noise, necessary to hear music clearly, resulting in the listener increasing the output volume of the mobile audio device. >>

Faerie Glen Bulletin 05... Hearing Loss: A Concern for the Younger Generation << Symptoms of a noise induced hearing loss may include sounds we are able to hear being distorted or muffled and / or difficulty hearing or following a conversation in a crowded or noisy environment. Tinnitus is, in addition, often a symptom of a noise induced hearing loss and can be defined as a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear. If you or your children are experiencing these symptoms, make an appointment with your closest audiologist for a diagnostic assessment of your hearing. By adhering to the following tips, exposure to music through mobile audio devices may prove less detrimental: 1. Switch to headphones: Headphones isolate background noise making it possible for the listener to listen to music at lower volumes. 2. Listen at volumes lower than 85 decibels: A lawnmower s sound is measured at approximately 90 decibels, so listen to music softer than that. 3. Lower the maximum volume setting on your mobile audio device: Some of the new technology devices allow the listener to restrict the maximum level of volume, preventing the listener from accidentally turning their music up too high. 4. Limit your listening: The louder the music, the shorter the duration you should listen. 5. Use the 60 / 60 rule: Listen to your mobile audio device for 60 minutes at 60% of its maximum volume. 6. Take a break: Giving your ears a break from your personal amplification device allows them a chance to rest and hopefully to restore themselves to optimal functioning. 7. Don t use earbud earphones: Earbuds are more likely to cause damage to hearing cells than headphones. 8. Never max it out: Although tempting, avoid listening to your music at the device s maximum volume. 9. Don t fall asleep while listening: Your amplification device is not able to tell if you re awake or asleep, and will therefore continue to play music at levels for durations which may be harmful to your hearing. If you need music to fall asleep, consider playing classical music from a speaker on your bedside table at a low volume. If you are concerned about yours or a loved one s hearing, please feel free to contact us at www.kind2hearing.co.za or 012 991 2280. We offer free hearing screenings to adults.

Hence the term: Black Friday! Thirty minutes from my house to Pick n Pay. Why did you drive so fast? My wife is pregnant and she says if I miss the specials on the baby goods she ll kill me. By the way my name is Melusi. Aag, dit glo ek nie. Parkeer jou mooi kar en kom sit by ons. Melusi, you are number three in line Neem ek as ouma beheer oor ons nagwaak. So ontaard Pick n Pay se parkeerterrein later in n resiesbaan. Op n stadium het Melusi sy vrou geskakel en gesê hy is veilig: I have a granny on my left and the Botha family on my right. And don t worry I am number three in line Van die Klippies en Coke wat hierdie granny hom laat drink het, rep hy natuurlik nie n woord nie. Skielik staan twee sekuriteitswagte van die winkel voor ons: Why don t you people go home? You are like the homeless people, the malala tipes, you know. Jan Botha, Melusi en al die ander drinkebroers sê: We are here for the big sale. We think you must open the doors of the shop for us now. Then we can choose what we want. Waar vererg die man hom vir hierdie klomp stuitige mense: No, I shall call the police if you do that. Sien jou daar!

08 Summer Edition 2018 Nurture a love of reading in your kids I am sure you have heard many arguments for and against technology, and many opinions on whether TV and computers are taking over the lives of our children. Do I have a definitive answer about tech for you? No, I don t. What I can say is that I have never heard anyone complain about having developed a love of reading, other than maybe a few grumbles about the cost of books! Luckily a visit to the library can solve that problem. If you want to nurture a love of reading in your child, I am guessing it is because of one or both of these reasons: 1. You love reading and want them to experience that love. 2. You believe reading will be good for them. One way or another, here are a few tips to help you get your kids to read. You have to read yourself If you are already a bookworm, this will be easy. If not, find books, articles or even websites about things you are interested in, and read. Read where your child can see you actions speak louder than words. Read to them Reading to your kids before bedtime can be a great time to bond and a good opportunity for them to wind down before going to sleep. It also introduces them to reading without the pressure of having to read themselves (just yet). Choose interesting books about topics your child loves. They can be story books or non-fiction, and if they are longer books, you can do a chapter per night, or even just a few pages. Just keep a bookmark at hand. Discuss what you read When spending time in other places with your kids, like taking them to school, talk to them about what you were reading the night before at bedtime. Ask questions or imagine together what will happen next in a story. You can also tell them about something interesting you read. For example say something like, I was reading about trains; did you know that When you have a chance, show them what you were reading. Make it easy for them to read Make sure your kids have access to books. Take them to the library or, if the budget allows, a bookshop and give them time to select a book. Don t rush them. Take this time to look for something you might enjoy reading too. Find reading related activities Is there a book reading at the library? Then take them. Maybe there is a play of one of the fairy tales at a local theatre? Go watch the show, get the story book, read it together and talk about how the play and the book were the same or different. You can do this with movies too many movies are based on books, or have a books released based on the movie. Get popcorn and make a night of watching the movie. The book can now be your bedtime reading for a while, and you can discuss the differences between the book and movie. Don t be too serious about what they read The first step in learning to love reading is to start reading, so don t get too hung up on what they read. Magazines, graphic novels, the online Minecraft wiki can all be a start to a potentially long and happy relationship with reading.

10 Summer Edition 2018 WHAT SHOULD WE FEED OUR CATS? by Dr Eva Middleton As cat owners, we all want to give our feline friends the best possible diet for health and longevity. With so many products on the market and so much conflicting information out there, it seems overwhelming to make the right choice. First, I always think it s a good thing to start with some facts. The average life span of a cat in the 1980 s was about 7 years. By 1995 this had increased to 9.4 years and by 2014 to between 12-15 years. Through better education, routine sterilization and advances in nutrition, our cats now live almost twice as long as 40 years ago! It is interesting that it was during the 1990 s, that the super-premium cat food brands became more prevalent. So, what should our cats be eating? Cats are obligate carnivores. This simply means that they need to eat animal protein! In the wild, cats are hunters and their prey provides them with a diet consisting mostly of animal protein, moderate amounts of fat and minimal amounts of carbohydrate. Whatever our own dietary preferences or convictions might be, cats cannot be omnivores (like dogs and humans), vegetarians or vegans. Their entire digestive system and metabolism is designed for a meat based diet. Cats need Taurine. This is an essential amino acid, which is not naturally produced in the cat s body and therefore needs to be taken in through the diet. Taurine is important for heart health, the functioning of the immune system and for the health of the retina in the eye. Cats also need various vitamins and minerals as building blocks and for enzymes and hormones in the body. These need to be included in the diet at very specific levels and in certain ratios to ensure that our cats get exactly what they need. Fatty Acids are important for brain and coat health. They act as anti-oxidants and reduce inflammation. Essential Fatty Acids are those that cannot be produced in the body and need to be taken in through the diet, like AA, EPA and DHA. How can we be sure that our cats are getting what they need? Nutritionally, our cats need plenty of fresh water and a balanced diet. Fresh water should always be available. Cats often prefer not to drink where they eat, therefore water should be made available in several different places. Cats prefer fresh water and replenishing water several times during the day will encourage our cats to drink more. Tinned food can also provide additional water and feeding a combination of tinned and pelleted food can help our cats take in plenty of fluids. When choosing a product to feed our cats, the first thing we need to do is to teach ourselves to read labels of commercial cat food properly. Don t be distracted by the cute picture of the cat on the front of the bag! Turn the bag over and have a look at the ingredients list. Pet foods list the ingredients in order of weight, starting with the heaviest. (Remember that tinned food contains 75% water) Scan the first 3 ingredients. The first one needs to be an animal protein. Look out for words like meat vs by-product to get an idea of the quality of the animal protein in the commercial product Most cat foods will contain some carbohydrates, but these need to be in small quantities Look for Taurine as an individual item on the list. Do not assume that it is included in the Vitamins and minerals component Look for colourants and flavourants in the list. The colour and flavour should come naturally through the animal protein and not be added in artificially Identify artificial preservatives. Fortunately, Vit C and Vit E as well as Citric Acid and Rosemary are now often added as natural preservatives in many products, to replace the chemical preservatives used historically. Look for these, to feel confident about the safety of the preservatives When choosing your product, ensure that you are feeding for the correct life stage of your cat. 0-12 months is a Kitten, 1-7 years is an Adult and a cat over 7 years of age is considered to be a Senior. Each life stage has different nutritional needs catered for by the product. When comparing supermarket cat food to veterinary super-premium brands, always calculate the cost of feeding your cat per day, rather than simply comparing the price per bag. Take the weight of the bag in grams and divide this by the grams fed per cat per day. This will give you the number of days per bag. Take the price of the bag and divide this by the number of days to get the cost per day. You will be pleasantly surprised to find that the cost of feeding super-premium products per day is only marginally higher than the cost of supermarket products. Feeding top of the range products can be affordable.

Faerie Glen Bulletin 11 How to Prepare Your Feet for Summer While most see the summer months as opportunity to hit the beach, catch a tan and redefine the word relaxation at their favourite holiday destination we re excited for a completely different reason Warmer weather means we get to show off our gorgeous feet in stunning summer sandals! Now that we ve got your attention ladies, we need to talk Most of us already know that grabbing a pedicure before going on summer holiday is something that should be done, right? www.shoeperama.co.za The issue with getting pedis done at salons is that unfortunately, not all of these establishments actually sanitise their soaking tubs and equipment correctly. Unsanitary pedicure equipment can lead to toenail fungus transmission and bacterial infections, which will probably only reveal themselves when you re at your Christmas party in sandals and can t hide your toes. So, grab a pedi before summer hits with full force, but be sure to visit a salon that takes hygiene very, VERY seriously. Moisturise CRACKED HEELS! Just making sure you re still with us The hot, summer weather does one thing extremely well it dehydrates. We re not only talking about the thirst you feel walking off the beach after a full day of becoming a lobster in the blistering sun. We re talking about your skin. So, in the interest of keeping your heels (and the rest of your feet) looking and feeling like a baby s bottom all through summer, be sure to start moisturising your feet every night from now until you go on holiday. Trust us, your future self will thank you for it! Be Shoe Smart SUMMER SANDALS! That s right, the shoes you choose to wear between now and the warmer summer months are going to affect your feet. How? Closed shoes are known to cause sweaty foot syndrome (especially during summer). The damp, humid conditions in your shoes are like a haven for bacterial growth and fungus incubation. So, do your nail technician a favour and choose open shoes as much as possible between now and when you go for your pre-holiday pedicure. Come visit Shoeperama to find the perfect pair of sandals for summer!

Faerie Glen Bulletin 13 5 ways to help you declutter your life and mind Our lives are busy and full filled with obligations and responsibilities and just... stuff. All this can make us feel overwhelmed and claustrophobic. Having more can actually make us feel less happy. Here are a few ways that can help you get a jump-start on living a decluttered life. 1. Don t buy the thing It can be overwhelming to start clearing out if we have already accumulated a large amount of clutter, so the first step is: do not get more. The clutter must have come from somewhere, and if we get into the habit early on to not buy more, we can at least stop adding to the problem. Also, it will be easier to stay clutter free if you start practicing to fight the instinct of more is better. What to do: Before buying something, ask yourself how often you will actually use it, where you will store it and if it will bring joy to your life. Also consider what you will do with it if it turns out that you do not need it after all. Thinking about these factors will help you determine if you should be bringing more into your home in the first place. REMEMBER: This goes for free stuff as well. If someone is clearing out their house and offers their things (clutter) to you, do not fall into the trap of thinking you have to take them. Something is not really free if it clutters your life. 2. Work towards an active solution Often our minds are weighed down with worries; from whether we can pay our bills, to how to deal with a fight we had with a friend. Working towards finding a solution is helpful, while imagining bad outcomes or worst case scenarios only clutters our minds. What to do: If it is something you can change, work on finding a way to make the change and solving the problem. If there is nothing you can do, acknowledge it, but do not allow yourself to spend too much time on it. Sometimes you just have to move on. 3. The 3 year rule There are often things we keep because I might still use it. The actual truth is that more often than not these things end up as both physical and mental clutter, taking up space in our homes and filling our minds with guilt for not using them. What to do: If you haven t used it in 3 years, chances are that you are never going use it. That guitar you were going to learn to play let it go. That box of broken tiles you were going to use for doing mosaic let it go. You can sell it or donate it, but do not let it take away from your happiness anymore. 4. Don t just move it around When you choose that you want to declutter your home, decide what you are going to do with the items you do not keep. Often after a spring clean we end up with bags and boxes filled with stuff that we know we do not want, but somehow that stuff stays in our home, being moved from place to place as it gets in our way. What to do: Know what you are going to do with the items before you start. Giving to a charity? Set a date for when you will deliver and stick to it. Selling? Give yourself a deadline before your charity delivery date if you haven t sold them by then, add them to your charity donation and deliver them. Have a plan for getting the clutter you have identified out of your home. 5. Fill your life with what brings joy We live in a world where it often feels that the more we have, the better our life is. As mentioned at the start, this more unfortunately also often translates to less joy. What to do: Have a look at your life and surroundings and ask yourself if what you see really makes you happy. If not, think about what it is that would bring you true joy, and shape your world according to your bliss.
