Marvin is scheduled to judge Scotties at Westminster in 1969, an d be reminded that new requirements are such that a three-point major is necessary to enter this year instead of the single point previously required. Mr. Louis J. Murr will be judging BIS. EASTERN NEWS by Robert A. Marshall 329 Newtown Road Wyckoff, New Jersey It recently struck me at a show that most breeders and exhibitors don't really know how to show a dog well. This type of generalization usually gets me a sack of irate mail, but let's explore the thought. There are three essential elements in showing a dog; Knowledge, concentration, and the ability to physically perform the routines of control and movement. No one will quarrel that most breeders have sufficient knowledge on how an exhibit should be presented; in fact, most of them possess a degree of expertness not found in their professional competition. In addition, most breeders have long since mastered the fundamentals of the physical aspects of handling their dogs. They have years of experience in and around the kennels and have a well developed sense of control over their dogs. Why then do most exhibits that are owner-breeder handled suffer by comparison when stacked up against an exhibit that is professionally handled: CONCEN TRATION. The professional handler never once forgets that he is at a dog show to work and only through working at it will he win. You never namely, see the pro standing around indulging in idle gossip in the ring; he is putting on that final touch with brush or comb or watching the judge. He knows what the judge wants to see and presents it to the best of his ability. The owner-handler tries to present a picture of casual, 'Tm - in - this - for - the sport - of - it" attitude - the professional, "I'm here to win." The results reflect this. There is adequate time to be a good sport after the placements but beforehand concentrate on winning. Your dog will sense and enjoy the competition too. Scotties have to feel the excitement of being shown and, I'm convinced, enjoy winning. Odds 'n Ends For those of you that missed the Bull Terrier column in the June issue, show results should be sent directly to T.T. - and make sure you send all the information.
