Encouraging and Promoting Quality Terriers Newsletter of the Tampa Bay Terrier www.tampabayterrierclub.com Message From The President WELCOME TO 2014!!! Happy New Year everyone! Here's hoping that everyone had a wonderful holiday season and the new year brings everyone good health, good luck and good laughs. Speaking of good laughs! Looking back on the conformation shows, as we were sitting ringside in four layers of clothes, we must have looked pretty pathetic and extremely funny. On Monday morning, the weather at the start of the show was balmy and pleasant but as the day progressed the temperature started dipping and the winds whipping. By the end of Monday's show, sunny Florida went to the dogs! Of course the only ones enjoying the cold, windy air were the dogs! January 2014 Inside this issue: MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2 MINUTES 3 UPCOMING SHOWS 6 1 Tuesday's show should have been titled; 'Hell Freezes Over in Brooksville!' At the start of Tuesday's show, the thermometer registered somewhere between cold and freezing and a few avid dog people still appeared to compete. Guess there is no explaining crazy! But all in all, the shows came off without any complaints or problems and I think the exhibitors had a good time. There were some excellent dogs shown and for being a date change a wonderful turnout! A huge congratulation and thank you to Linda Lopez for chairing the shows and helping to ease the transition to the January circuit. Everyone was very receptive and enthusiastic about the change and hopefully the club has found a home for a long time. With effort, help and suggestions to parent, local or regional clubs there is no reason why our shows can't be built into a great Terrier Event! Although there will be a lull in major club activities, there is always a lot of planning and brainstorming to prepare for the events for the upcoming year. This is why it is important to have members at the meetings for new, fresh ideas and suggestions. Those members that compete in conformation and performance are ultimately the people that are more in tune with the doggie world and can bring a new slant to the table. President from page 1 2013 could not have been a success without the help of the club members that work hard and give their very best to make every event great! Please help me in thanking the officers and board members, and the members that spend many hours behind the scenes keeping the club functioning. Thank you everyone. Don't forget, the March Earthdog dates now belong to the Florida Gulf Coast Dachshund Club. Meet The Breeds Glen of Imaal Terrier. The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a rough-and-ready working terrier that is the least known of the four terrier breeds native to Ireland. Longer than tall and sporting a harsh coat of medium length, the Glen is very much a big dog on short legs. The Glen is the only terrier breed of Ireland not defined by a single color. Acceptable colors for the breed are various shades of wheaten, blue and brindle.. Initially bred to rid the home and farm of vermin, and hunt badger and fox, these rugged dogs also had a unique task for which they were expressly designed to perform - they were turnspit dogs. The turnspit was a large wheel which, when paddled by the dog, would turn a spit over the hearth -- a canine propelled rotisserie. Today's Glens are very much the same as the Glens that worked the lowlands of County Wicklow 100 years ago, with very little refinement or influence by fashion. When working, the Glen is active, agile, silent and intent upon its game; otherwise, he can be a docile companion for families with older children. A real terrier of considerable substance and temperament, this breed is a harsh-coated breed that requires stripping twice a year. Hair should also be removed from under the tail, the ears, and from between the pads. Terrier Group; AKC recognized in 2004. Ranging from 12½ to 14 inches tall at the shoulder. Fox hunter, vermin chaser. Page 9

Meet The Breeds Russell Terrier. The Russell Terrier is a strong, hardy, earth-working Terrier. He is full of life and moves with confidence that matches his keen expression. The breed's handy size, small flexible chest, nose, strong voice and fearless nature make it an excellent specimen to work vermin below ground. Its weatherproof coat may be smooth, broken or rough and is predominantly white with tan and/or black markings. The Russell Terrier originated in England, but developed in Australia. The small size of the breed made it ideal to be carried on horseback in terrier bags, a requisite for certain terrain. The breed derived from the Reverend Parson's fox working terrier strains, sharing many common characteristics of the Parson Russell Terrier. However, it must be noted the two breeds are distinctly different in body structure and height and have been maintained as separate breeds in the US and Europe. The Russell Terrier is confident, highly intelligent and faithful, and views life as a great adventure. The breed possesses a vast amount of energy, so it does best with an active family that spends a lot of time outdoors. It will remain devoted and loving to its 'people' for its lifetime. The Russell Terrier coat requires minimal upkeep beyond brushing and occasional bathing. Terrier Group. Ranging in size from 10 to 12 inches tall at the shoulder. Fox hunter. Page 10
