LCKC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Officers: BEVERLY MORGAN LEWIS President JILL OTTO Vice President KRIS SMITH Secretary SUSAN HARTMAN DEAN Treasurer Members of the Board: Sara Borok Deb St. Myers Emily Dalton Next meeting: Tuesday, Nov 15 at the the Adorni Center (Address is at bottom of page) Join Us! Everyone is welcome! BOARD MEETING 6:30 PM REGULAR MEETING 7:OO PM Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month, alternating between the Adorni Center in Eureka 1011 Waterfront Drive, in odd numbered months and at The Clubhouse at The Meadows, 2520-90 Hubbard Lane, Eureka in even numbered months. No meeting in December. The Lost Coast H O W L E R November 2016 Editor: Tina Moulton President s Corner Well, here it is; my final President s Corner. I have enjoyed serving as your president for the past 3 years and wouldn t mind continuing to do so for a bit longer. But now that I m not available on Tuesday nights, it just isn t practical. I think we ve had some noteworthy accomplishments over the last 3 years. We ve kept our July events going with our breed show and obedience, rally and agility trials. We added a barn hunt to our July agility trial. But what I am probably most proud of is that we ve added a winter event our January obedience and rally trials and barn hunt. While a lot of clubs seem to be pulling back, we have been able and willing to expand our offerings to the dog-loving community. I have felt nothing but support and encouragement from the officers and board members. They are the hard working backbone of our organization. But one person has been my right hand through it all and that person has been Jill Otto. She has always been there to keep me on track. So now it s someone else s turn to lead. I know Emily Dalton will do an excellent job as our next president. And I know you will all support and encourage her as you have me. The complete slate for the coming year is: Emily Dalton, President; Jill Otto, Vice President; Kris Smith, Secretary; Susan Hartman Dean, Treasurer and Board members, Sara Borok, Cathy Wright, Deb Tull. So a big THANK YOU! to those who served last year and those who will be serving next year. Don t forget the LCKC Holiday Party at Chris Irvin s on December 10. Be there or be square! www.lostcoastkc.org www.facebook.com/lostcoastkennelclub PO Box 6808, Eureka, CA 95502-6808 Beverly LCKC November 2016 1

Have you heard? From Kimber Gradin: Liberty Run s Journey of Zeeva won her Open Class Sunday at the GGGSMDC Specialty in Pleasanton against tough competition. (A big deal for us newbie competitors.) treensea s Draven von Humboldt der Frosch won his puppy class 2 out of 3 days in Pleasanton and then on Sunday at the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Specialty won Best in Puppy Classes. From Teri Cuzzetto: 2016 Basenji National TAKARI TEAZER'S BLACK MAGIC WOMAN, Aka Magic took a 2nd place out of 18 BBE Bitches Am GCH TEAZER KAZOR DRAG RACE aka RU Won BOB both days at the Ridgefield Wa show 10-29/30-2016. Made the cut in group on Saturday. LCKC November 2016 3

Have you heard? From Kris and Bayard Smith: It was a thrilling three days for us at the Harvest Moon cluster in Pleasanton October 21-23. On Friday, Colin got an Owner Handled Group 2. On Saturday, our 22 month old girl Opal went Winners Bitch, Best of Winners, and Best of Breed. On Sunday it was a Scottish Deerhound Club of America supported entry. Bayard steered Opal to another BOB, then on to an Owner Handled Group 1, and then an amazing Owner Handled Reserve Best in Show. LCKC was well represented, as Anita Gage's Irish Setter won the Owner Handled Sporting Group. Two of the seven dogs in the OH BIS ring were from LCKC! Opal is a new Champion. From Sandra Gould: At the November 13th Portland Dog Obedience Club tracking trials at Champoeg State Park (SE of Portland), Tippet earned his Tracking Dog title. Three of six dogs passed the TD test. Each team is assigned a track, 440-500yds long. The day before the trial, two judges meet with club's tracklayers and each track is plotted in the surrounding fields. The dog/handler team is taken to their track when the track is 30 minutes old. The handler sees two start flags which points the direction of the first leg. Beyond that, the handler has no idea where the track goes. The handler knows the rules state there will be a minimum of three right angle turns, but no more than five. The distance between dog and handler must be 20feet, minimum, at all times, and may be longer. Each leg is at least 50yds long. The dog is in charge and communicates to the handler where the track goes, where and in which direction the turns go. At the end, there is a leather glove which the dog proudly brings to the handler. Handler waves it in the air, and the two judges who have been following at a discrete distance, yell "Pass! Congratulations!" Because tracking is space and labor intensive and few can be entered in a trial, the dog/handler team must be certified. That means they have successfully completed a regulation track within the last year under an AKC tracking judge. Tippet did his in May 2016 in Bow Washington. Minutes of the Lost Coast Kennel Club October 18, 2016, at the Adorni Center, Eureka BOARD MEETING: Called to order by President Beverly Morgan Lewis at 6:33 p.m. Present: Sara Borok, Susan Dean, Beverly Morgan Lewis, Tina Moulton, Jill Otto, Kris Smith. Minutes of the Last Board Meeting: Approved with the following correction: The candidate running for Emily Dalton s Board position will be Cathy Wright, not Deb Tull. Report of the Treasurer: Susan distributed the Treasurer s Reports. She is not happy with the performance of Tri County Bank, so there was a discussion of moving our account to US Bank. It was agreed to stay with TriCounty for awhile to see if it gets better. Unfinished Business: - Event Committee Update: The Committee met for a second hearing at Kris Smith s house on October 14, and had a conference call with all parties involved. They heard new and different testimony, and concluded that there was not enough evidence to find that the behavior of the accused warranted suspension. - Rat Poison letter: There has been no response from the Fairgrounds, so we will drop it for now, but must be sure it s on the agenda in April so the show committee can tell the groundskeepers to pick up their bait. - Farm Store Event Report: Sara organized this, and put together raffle baskets mostly out of things we had in storage. - Nominating Committee: The Committee discussed and finalized the slate (see below). New Business: Thank-you ad for raffle donors: Cathy wrote a thank-you statement; it will be distributed via the Journal, Lost Coast Outpost, and our newsletter, website, and FaceBook page. The Board Meeting was adjourned at 7:02 p.m. REGULAR MEETING: Called to order by President Beverly Morgan Lewis at 7:03 p.m. Present: All of the above plus Emily Dalton and Haley Sellers, and her service dog, Sierra. Minutes of the last meeting: Approved with the following correction: Correct agility dates, and NOHS to one day. Report of the President: - The Annual dinner at Chapala was a big success, with 29 people attending (cost at about $450), good service and food. - Nosework report under committees? We decided to change Ring Practice to Practice, and include all practices. - Beverly thanked the club for her gift (Lancashire Heeler mailbox silhouette). Report of the Secretary: Mail: Bills and catalogs. The Mt Diablo show calendars have been ordered. Report of the Treasurer: We are still waiting for the stolen debit card to be replaced. Our treasury is down about $3540 from last year at this time. It s time to renew memberships. A notice will go out via the Yahoo Group and private emails to members. Report of the Committees: Practice: An informal nosework practice was held at Halvorsen Park one day last weekend (the second day was rained out). Another is set for next Sunday. Newsletter, Website: Updated with current dates, show thank-yous, and last newsletter. Yahoo group: Some new members have not responded to invitations. Tina will do a mock up of a possibility for an alternative discussion forum, since there are some difficulties with Yahoo Groups for users. Membership: List updated. B-OB Show - Cathy is still working on the judging panel for next year. Emily will help with filling out the AKC online forms. We still need one Obedience judge. The FaceBook page AKC Judges Review shows reviews of judges. - Beverly pointed out that we need to contact the Fairgrounds about rat poison as the show gets near. - Sara said we need a Rally chair for the June/July show. - MSAC to raise the entry fee to $28. - It was pointed out that the AKC is reconsidering the group alignment, which could mean higher expenses for our show in the future. - Tina reported that she got Creative Beverage, a Coffee and Belgian Waffle vendor, to commit to the June/July show. They will do judges coffee in exchange for free vendor space. A mug vendor, Mojo Mugs your photo put on mugs, will come, as she has relatives in the area to visit. Agility Trial Approval has been granted to add a day. Thursday (July 20) will be set-up and an Agility Match; Saturday, Sunday, and Monday will be Agility Trials. Barn Hunt: Next year, there will be a clinic on Friday, and Barn Hunts on Saturday and Sunday. January Obedience Trials and Barn Hunt: - Sara said that all the judges are in place, and approval has been granted for the Secretary to compete. She distributed the sign-up for trophy sponsors. There are no vendors yet; she is looking for a food vendor who will provide sandwiches for $6 or under. Contracts have been sent to the judges. She will block rooms at the Red Lion Inn. A volunteer is needed for Judges Hospitality. Need a letter to HumDOG asking to borrow mats. She will take the judges to dinner if they want. - Cathy wants to make sure there is a Barn Hunt notice in the Ob/Rally premium list. Also, a Save the Date notice for our other events. LCKC November 2016 6

- The trailer will need to be at the site on January 20. Election of New Members: No new applications. Report of the Nominating Committee and Nomination of Officers and Board Members The Nominating Committee (Emily Dalton, Jill Otto, Cathy Wright) presented the following slate for 2017: - President: Emily Dalton - Vice-President: Jill Otto - Secretary: Kris Smith - Treasurer: Susan Dean - Board Members: Sara Borok, Cathy Wright, Deb Tull. Each office was opened for nominations from the floor; none were presented. The slate as presented by the committee will be approved at the November meeting. There was a discussion about whether we will need a secret ballot, and it was decided that we do not. Unfinished Business: - Event Committee: Same as above. - The Farm Store Pet Fair went well, thanks to all who came to help. We need to redesign the booth large photos of dogs doing different activities, new breeds poster, redo flier. Booth redesign Committee Cathy, Sara, Tina. New Business: - Holiday Party: Dec. 10, 6 p.m., Chris Irvin s house. - Meeting locations 2017. Same as this year odd months at Adorni, even months (except Dec) at the Meadows. Sara will arrange to get on the calendar at the Meadows. Jill will reserve the Adorni Center. Announcements: - HumDOG will have a drop-in rally practice Monday nights for $10 at 8 p.m. until Nov 21 (except Oct 31). January 9 and 16 will be classes and practices before our trials. - Cathy, Emily, and Sara said thanks for the club gifts for them being event chairs in 2016. - Coming this Saturday Bark in the Park, fundraiser for the Fire Department. The regular meeting was adjourned at 8:32 p.m. Respectfully submitted by Kris Smith, LCKC Secretary LCKC November 2016 7
