Director s News J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 1 I don t know about all of you but I am so glad 2010 is behind us. I am excited that 2011 will hopefully take us to whole new level as a rescue. I am working on setting up a timeline of goals we want to meet this year. I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Happy 2 Homes Anniversaries 2 Beagle Dress 2 up Day Baxter Update 3 Upcoming 3 Events Ways to 3 Donate Rescue 4 Information In wrapping up 2010, I am proud to announce that we saved 33 beagles and adopted out 24 of those beagles to their forever homes. Not bad for only having 3 main foster homes! Huge Kudos to Katie, Whit, Kirstie and Glen in helping us save these lives. One of our goals this year is to grow our foster family so we can purpose to save double that this year. Yesterday alone, we saved 2 (THANK YOU GEORGE). If you have the heart, home and love to help us save more beagles, now is the time to step up. We need fosters more than ever. Remember all vet expenses are paid for you just give love, food and shelter. Since May of 2009 to present we have saved 51 lives. This time next year I hope to report that 100 or more beagles have been saved and living the good life. Please join me in praying, hoping and supporting this goal. Beagley Blessed, Brittany Meet Diesel! Diesel is a 7 month old tri color beagle puppy, he weighs about 45 lbs right now and we think that he has some larger Hound in him as well. Diesel was found at a local dollar store and a good Samaritan took him in until he could get into rescue. Diesel spent some time being boarded at a local grooming salon. He knows all about a good pampering. Now, Diesel spends his day with his new foster family. So far we know that Diesel is a typical highly active beagle puppy. He need a large fenced yard to run and play in along with some siblings either fur siblings, human or both. He is a barrel of laughs, love and kisses. Diesel is looking for a typical family environment, one with lots of love and activity. He is absolutely perfect for an active person or family.
P A G E 2 Happy Homes Candy is doing wonderfully and is she has definitely added to our enjoyment of life. She is always coming up with something new. Candy has a wonderful temperament and sure likes a lot of loving. She and I have gone to sleep on the couch and Faye had to wake us up to go to bed. Of course we were watching a lousy football game and got bored. She is at her best when we have company, she loves to meet everyone and make the rounds. Her best friend is a 70 lb black Shepherd that belongs to my step daughter. They say that beagles are stubborn and Candy is no exception. I will let her out before we go to bed and when I call her to come in she will look at me and then take the longest way around before she gets to the door. However when she comes in I clean her feet and she lies down on a towel and sticks all four feet up to be cleaned and of course get a little snack. She has certainly added a new dimension to our lives and we are so happy that you made it possible. Jack and Faye Lucas Anniversaries Happy January Anniversary to Abby and Paisan! Not only are we so thrilled that these beagles found their forever homes, but our rescue has been blessed with their wonderful owners who continue to stay involved with our organization through referrals, donations and fostering. National Pet Dress up Day! Did you know that January 14th is National Dress up your Pet Day?? If you ask your beagles they'll probably tell you they're always looking for an excuse to wear costumes..you'd be bored too if you had to wear the same fur coat every single day. So dress up your puppy as a pirate, Hamlet, a princess, a cowboy or anything you can think of. Be sure to snap a few pics to show off your adorable beagle and send them to us at floridafirstcoastbeaglerescue@gmail.com. Be creative, we can t wait to see your beautiful beagles! V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 1 P A G E 3 Baxter Update! We seem to have some medically complex beagles in our rescue right now, and we want to give everyone an update on Baxter. Baxter came to us from Animal Care and Protective Services with a wound in his groin area which was continually infected. Baxter had his exploratory abdominal surgery with Dr. Athey and was very groggy after surgery, he spent the first couple days after surgery resting in his crate. After a couple weeks of allowing his wound to heal, Baxter went back to the vet for what we hope is the last time for a looong time! We are so thrilled to let everyone know that Baxter is doing wonderful since his surgery. Baxter had his staples removed New Years Eve and he was able to start 2011 staple and cone free! Baxter enjoyed the ride home, I even got video of him being able to finally ride with his head out the window and enjoying the breeze! We are keeping our fingers and paws crossed that this will end Baxters chronic infection. And of course, none of this could be possible without the donations and generosity of our wonderful rescue family! Baxters surgery would not have happened without your support and you have all helped to give Baxter another chance at a pain free life! Here s some big sloppy beagle kisses to all of the wonderful contributors: Annie Ferguson, Art Pimental, Carl Bauman, Elizabeth Nardiello, George Rogers, Jane Harvey, Janis Bosworth, Marilyn Zeigler, Meredith Aber, Kathy Peacock and Suncoast Basset Rescue, Kirstie Elliot, Pam and Bob Tice and Russ and Marti Harvey Upcoming Events February 12 On Saturday, February 12 th Animal Care and Protective Services will have their annual Save Your Sweetheart event. Happy Homes for the Holidays: An alumni update Molly I'm so sorry it has taken so long to get back to you! Chris proposed back in May and we moved to Columbus, Ohio in June. So it has been a busy few months for us! Molly is doing great!!! Bandit and her are inseparable!!! If one goes outside without the other when they come back in they act like they haven't seen each other in forever! It is too cute! And Bandit comes running to take care of his little sister if something happens to her and gives her kisses! They love to give each other kisses!!! Also since we moved the 2 things on our wish list for the rental we got was a fenced in back yard and a basement. We got both! So Molly and Bandit LOVE the fact they just have to go out the back door to be outside! I'm really eager to see how they are gonna react the first time they need to go outside in the snow! I'm at work right now so I don't have any current pictures that I can send right now, but I'll do that when I get home! And I will definitely send one of her out in the snow once it starts snowing! And I would love to type something up for you! I'll get started on that and get that over to you soon! Lily Lucy She is just a delight. She is loyal beyond belief, affectionate as can be, and a total opportunist when it comes to food and treats. She's not too bright sometimes. Karen had to show her how to push the sunroom door open to get out. The door was slightly ajar, and Lucy was standing there with her nose in the crack of the door, frustrated that she couldn't get out. So Karen gently pushed Lucy's head to one side so the door opened. Then today, I dropped a piece of turkey on the kitchen floor. She gobbled it up and stared at that same spot on the floor, as if the food came up through the floor. She's very amusing, and is the perfect dog for us. She seems to be completely comfortable, doesn't have a destructive bone in her body -- except for Swiffer duster refills -- and is the perfect family addition for us. Thank you so much for letting us adopt her!
Happy Homes for the Holidays: An alumni update Karley Karley is without a doubt the best Christmas present from last year that I could have imagined. She got some extra treats and a new squeaker toy for her "anniversary". I don't think she could tell the difference between Christmas presents and anniversary presents, but we did celebrate! Thank you SO MUCH for saving her precious little life so I could have her for my "forever" buddy. Janis P.S. Karley had her yearly checkup last week and she is perfectly healthy. She did get the "chubby report", so we bought that Hills Weight Reduction (R/D) prescription diet from the vet and I know from experience it works. She likes it, too. Janis Bosworth Arthur Arthur just finished his heart worm treatment that he had here and is now finally heart worm free. Arthur is also taking thyroid medicine daily and will for the rest of his life. The treatment and meds have made a tremendous difference in his life, he is now running and playing and is a happy hound. He is the light of my life and we love him dearly. Thanks for all you do to help Arthur and all the other hounds. I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas.
