April 2014 Inside This Issue: WKC Volunteer Opportunities 2 March Gen. Mtg. Minutes 3 Art Show Info. & Silent Auction 4 AKC News 5 WICHITA KENNEL CLUB, INC. A Word from the President Tom Chase This is our most important and busiest week of the year! Please take the time to volunteer at your Sunflower Cluster. The success of our show depends upon us making sure that our exhibitors, our vendors, and the general public enjoy themselves and want to come back next year and every year. We all have busy schedules, but even a couple of hours can make a difference. Don t forget to shop at our vendors! Their booth rental fees go a long way toward paying our rent on the Pavilions, so please do your best to support them. Our show is one of the highlights of the year, and we can t do it without our member volunteers. Page 2 of 6 Sunflower Cluster Kids Corner Information and Volunteers NEEDED Nancy Moody with her Brussels Griffons at the 2014 Meet the Breeds at Century II May General Meeting Monday May 12th 7:30 PM This year, we are instituting a new policy for dogs that are involved in our Canine Ed/Kiddy Booth at the Sunflower Cluster of Dog Shows. Every dog *must* have a crate in the Kiddy Booth or at the show site. This is so dogs can rest, people can eat/go to the bathrooms, and the dogs will be safe and contained. It is *recommended* the dog have either a: Star Puppy, a Canine Good Citizen, Canine Good Citizen Advanced, or a Therapy Dog certification, but it is not *required*. The public is of my utmost concern as is the dogs' welfare. No Exceptions. If you have any questions, or concerns, feel free to contact me at ozbelgnz@cox.net and I'll be happy to discuss via email or call you back. Thank you for supporting the Sunflower Cluster of Dog Shows. We have a wonderful show planned and hope to see you all there! We are renting a cargo van and will have blankets, cardboard, etc. to pack the work. Wednesday: 2:00 PM: We will meet in the alley behind CityArts, and we need as many of you as we can to help us move the work into the rental van. If we have more than will fit in the rental, we may need some extra van space. Please let me know if you will have a van or extra space in yours. 5:00 PM: The construction crew will build the Art Show surround. Thursday: 8:00 AM: We will try to have the vans in the building to off-load the artwork. During the weekend if you want a quiet assignment, we'll welcome anyone to babysit the Art show. On Monday, April 7, beginning shortly after lunch, we will tear down and sort the artwork, and we will need people to help get it all back to the WKC building. Page 5 of 6 Invite Local and State Lawmakers to Your Dog Event By: Jennifer Clark, Canine Legislation Manager, AKC Government Relations Recently, AKC GR invited local lawmakers to the Tarheel Cluster dog shows in Raleigh, North Carolina so they could see first-hand what we already know that shows encourage and celebrate excellence in breeding and the joys and responsibility of dog ownership. In addition, AKC Canine Partners SM hosted My Dog Can Do That! in conjunction with the Tarheel shows. This event encourages the public to try out some agility obstacles with their dogs and receive free, one-onone assistance from an experienced trainer. Guests from the North Carolina General Assembly who came to the Tarheel event this year enjoyed taking their dogs through My Dog Can Do That! and participating in a tour of the dog show. They also watched and cheered on their favorite breeds, learned about responsible dog ownership and dog laws, walked through the grooming areas, and got to see first-hand the love, care, and dedication the exhibitors, groomers, handlers, and trainers have for their dogs. Do you have a dog event coming up in your area? If so, consider inviting local and state lawmakers to attend! Contact AKC GR at doglaw@akc.org for suggestions and assistance in reaching out to your legislators and educating them about responsible dog ownership! AKC National Owner-Handled Series Expanded to Specialty and Group Clubs Hosted exclusively by All-Breed clubs during the first two years of its existence, the American Kennel Club (AKC ) National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS) has now been opened to local and national Specialty clubs as well as Group clubs. After Specialty clubs saw the success All-Breed clubs had with the NOHS at their events, we received inquiries from many different breed clubs interested in taking part. We re pleased to be able to fulfill the requests by expanding the program, said Alan Slay, AKC Director of Event Programs. For Specialty clubs just now considering the NOHS, it s very easy to add the competition to your event, even if your club is already hosting special attractions like Best Puppy, Best Bred-By Exhibitor or Best Veteran. The expansion to specialty and group clubs will allow owner-handlers additional opportunities to compete for year-end points and rankings. The top ten owner-handled dogs (plus ties) in each breed in the 2014 qualifying year will be invited to compete in the National-Owner Handled Series Final, scheduled to be held in conjunction with the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship on December 12, 2014 in Orlando, Florida. In the inaugural Finals last year, more than 520 competitors entered, representing 160 breeds and 43 states and Canada.
