WISILL NEWS DECEMBER 2011 President / Vice Presidents Message It s been a busy year for WISILL and with it brings the close of another year. As we always do in our December message we would like to take a step back and reflect over 2011. Wow what a year it s been! In our second year as President and Vice President it has been a roller coaster ride, not always fun or frightening but definitely a ride. Not knowing what to expect at each event, but knowing that all of you would step up and fill the gaps made our jobs a lot easier! We started out the year with our annual Wild Game Dinner being hosted by AG & Maureen Shaw. We finished off the month of February with a successful upland hunt. In early April, we held our annual WISILL Fun Hunt and the weather actually did cooperate and we got to see a lot of nice dogs run. In April, we started our spring training sessions. Many WISILL members have adapted to the Evan Graham Smartworks training materials and as a result the WISILL training committee set up training drills on our scheduled training days. In June, we put on the retriever portion of the training you to train your dog seminar at the Bong Open House. We also hosted our first back-to-back summer hunt where we were responsible for both days and the evening banquet. At the end of July, we held our Annual Picnic and Trap Shoot at Burlington Conservation Club where all members and their families were able to demonstrate their shooting skills. Fella member, Casaundra Copeland took top honors in the Annie Oakley competition. Don t know if the dudes will ever live that one down! In August, we co-hosted our annual hunt with Badger. Thankfully, September also brought in the start of the hunting season! Many members gathered to hunt and let their dogs show off the skills they worked so hard perfecting. A great time was had by all who attended the banquet! Thankfully, Mother Nature cooperated and allowed those far away distance members a safe and uneventful ride home! For those of you that were able to attend the December meeting/ Christmas banquet you already know that there were 29 HRC titles and awards achieved, including Bob Czarnowski/Shorty reaching the pivotal 500 point monument and Larry Andersen/Nala on obtaining their HRCH. Each and every member should take pride in the number of titles club members earned! Additionally, WISILL also recognized the more than 23 non-hrc titles that were earned by various WISILL members. A Big Thank You goes out to Roger Davis and Dee Sherwood for their many years of service in office. As much of a success as 2011 was, we look forward to 2012 and all that it will bring with it as WISILL welcomes two Board Members, Mike Stanfield, Treasurer, and Larry Andersen, Secretary, replacing Roger and Dee, respectively, and also takes on the feat of hosting the HRC Spring Grand. Wishing you all a Happy New Year with hopes that it brings you happiness and good tidings! A.G. Shaw and Dorine Reinert

2012 WISILL DUES NOW DUE It is that time of year --Time to pay your 2012 dues. A check made payable to WISILL HRC should be sent to Mike Stanfield, 5125 6 Mile Road, Racine, WI 53402. Dues are $50 a year for a family or $45 for an individual. Again, this includes your WISILL dues and your national HRC dues. BONG DOG TRAINING PERMITS As the new year approaches be sure that you check the expiration on your dog-training permit. They are good for 3 years but they are dated. Meeting called to order at 7:10 p.m. Total # of Attendees: Approx. 50 SUMMARY: Roger Davis provided the Treasurer s Report and WISILL remains in sound financial position going into the new year. The actual meeting was predominantly geared towards 2011 title recognitions. There were 29 HRC titles and 23 non-hrc titles! Additionally, as mentioned at last year s banquet, the WISILL Board of Directors awarded Mike Witt s donations of a Tri-Tronics Pro 500 transmitter/collar and a year s worth of Purina dog food for one to the most improved handler and most improved dog to Vanessa Everett and Raven (Jim Broetzmann s dog), respectively. We did have a few new members in attendance as well. AG asked these folks to stand up and introduce themselves. As always, when training resumes out at Bong, please feel free to welcome others to join in on your training regimens. If they re not WISILL members, they very well may be interested in joining the club. AG Shaw thanked Club members for all their efforts this past year! If you are a member of an organization that is looking for a retriever demonstration or seminar please let Larry Andersen know. This is a great way to get the word out about WISILL and to show people what their dog is capable of with a little training. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Here are some NOTES that were taken at the Nov. meeting re: HRC Grand Spring Hunt Test Dogs must have 100 points or have the title of Hunting Retriever Champion WISILL volunteered to host the event. We were approved 2 years ago. The planning is similar to having a baby or planning a wedding. Good planning will eliminate us from getting in over our heads. How it was done in 2005 is not the same as the way it is done now. The work starts on the front end and pretty much stays there through the week. XXXX has volunteered to be a Program Director (similar to our Site Marshals) that stays at that same test all week. Ideally there should be 2 Program Directors at each test site. Dogs have to run in running order...no one gets to squeeze in (other than no birds ) or they must have an ACT of Congress to get it changed. If they miss...they don t get to run...they just forfeited. Each test should be somewhere between 8-10 minutes. The committee prefers closer to 8 minutes. 4 tests running simultaneously 2 land / 2 water and they rotate. You will not run 2 water tests in a row.. or 2 land in a row...water tests take longer and if it gets dark you may wind up not running on Saturday...and wind up running 2 tests on Sunday. We anticipate that we ll have anywhere s up to 450 dogs running. There is no limit to the number of dogs but there is a deadline of approx. one month that the handlers need to register. The work starts on the Weds. before the event. (May 23) and they are REALLY LONG DAYS! You will see the Hunt Committee every a.m. between 5 a.m. and finish with the last dog as the light is going away...(because we have to). (sometimes, it s midnight) But the committee still needs to do the scoring.. inputting, etc. There is a process of elimination. Once you FAIL one level...you re done... Weds dinner (possibly at the winery)...thursday night...winchester Gun Club.. Friday is the banquet. Thursday Judges seminar...from 7 11 a.m. then lunch By Thursday afternoon (4 5 p.m.) all four tests have been set up. (Dinner is normally on your own). HRC has their own Hunt Committee whom approve the test. The committee considers where does the sun come up and where does it set at evening. The HRC provides their own Hunt Secretary. HRC has their own Grand Treasurer that handles the dollars (we may also have our Treasurer involved). HRC provides the trailer and all of the equipment. HRC does not provide the shotguns. (WISILL needs to provide 8 10 870 s). Primer Poppers and gun stands are provided. On Friday afternoon at approx. 1 p.m. there is a Handler s seminar. There is a difference in grading between a Finished test and a GRAND test. It is typically held in the same place as the banquet. Banquet Helpers Handlers check in on Friday...During the meeting they are told where the selection of sites is and how the rotation is going to work, etc. The bulk of the handlers are professionals but there are still a group of pro-ams who run. Most of these people don t buy raffle tix. Some eat...some don t. BANQUET planning - - with 400 dogs...maybe only 125 to 150 people will eat.

Burlington Fund raising thoughts - - We ll give em free tix to the banquet if they come and spend money. Maybe we need to talk to the Burlington Commerce about advertising...it brings an impact of between $1.25 - $1.5 million to the area. There s gas money, there s store items, there s restaurants...there s. WE NEED TO LINE UP SOME PRODUCT...GO OUT AND KNOCKING ON DOORS...TO GET RAFFLE PRIZES, ETC. TEST STARTS...SAT, SUN, MON, TUES & possibly WEDS. Program director is in charge of bitch check and Bitch check happens every day at each test site...previously, we did it by the big lake (Wolf lake?) Inventory List: PAUL RAMPONI WILL BURN THEIR EARS OFF. Need to plug in Volunteer Names on the Worker- Bee Chart. # # #
