LCKC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Officers: BEVERLY MORGAN LEWIS President JILL OTTO Vice President KRIS SMITH Secretary SANDRA GOULD Treasurer Members of the Board: Sara Borok Deb St. Myers Emily Dalton Next meeting: Tuesday, February 17 th at the The Clubhouse at The Meadows (Address is at bottom of page) Join Us! Everyone is welcome! BOARD MEETING 6:30 PM REGULAR MEETING 7:OO PM The Lost Coast H O W L E R February 2015 Editor: Tina Moulton www.lostcoastkc.org www.facebook.com/lostcoastkennelclub President s Corner Has everyone gotten their application in for HumDOG s Expo? I sure hope so. As the local kennel club I think it s important that we make a good showing. So let s get out there to represent and share our passion for the fancy! We will again be providing the sound system. And, as usual, Chris Irvin is the voice of the Parade of Breeds. I m thrilled that our membership has grown over the last year. But we must remember that with membership comes responsibility. It is important that every member knows and follows our Code of Ethics http://lostcoastkc.org/uploads/3/4/3/6/3436596/lckc_code_of_ethics_2009.pdf and follows the rules as set out in our By Laws http://lostcoastkc.org/uploads/3/4/3/6/3436596/lckc_bylaws_sep_2012.pdf We are all aware of the countless organizations out there that would gladly end our rights to breed pure-bred dogs. If we were to breed casually or carelessly, we only add fuel to that fire. I encourage every member to read and reread these documents, as well as your national breed clubs codes of ethics, and follow them scrupulously. Our show and trials are getting closer. There is plenty to be done, so let us know how you would like to help. And, we continue to work toward adding events. Don t be left out!! Looking forward to seeing you all at our February meeting on the 17th at 7:00 at the Meadows. All are welcome to attend the Board meeting as well which precedes the general meeting at 6:30 pm. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month, alternating between the Adorni Center in Eureka 1011 Waterfront Drive, in odd numbered months and at The Clubhouse at The Meadows, 2520-90 Hubbard Lane, Eureka in even numbered months. No meeting in December. Beverly LCKC_2_2015 1

Have you heard? From Susan Hartman Dean: Sharing GCH Collina D'Oro Rock You Like a Hurricane, aka Dibs ring photo from the Rose City Classic in Portland, OR where he earned his Grand Championship! From Irene Hetrick: Scout achieved his MACH 2 and is now retired as CH MACH2 Spiceisle Crusader Song of Trinity, RA, OF, MXB, MJS! From Terri Moreno: On 1/25 Eli earned his Novice Standard Agility title at the Mensona Trial in Santa Rosa! LCKC_2_2015 2

Have you heard? From Mette Bryans: Pepsi got her first MACH in Ferndale in July and Sassy got her first MACH in Santa Rosa in December From Kris and Bayard Smith: Deerhound Colin finished his Oval Racing championship Sunday February 15. This boy loves to race! He's exuberant the whole weekend, smiling and wagging at everybody. The only downside is over night, when The Nose keeps checking to see if it's time yet to go to the field. Thanks to Gary Clagget for the running photo from the previous meet. Running the oval track Running the victory lap at home on the couch after a racing weekend From Nick and Patty Mendes: Roo (Falling Branch Golden Dream) started 2015 out with a bang! New Years day he won BOW at Desert Empire Terrier Club of S. CA under judge Connie Clark for a 5 point major, followed by Winners Dog for 2 points the next day. He then finished the weekend at the Palms Springs Kennel Club with BOW under judge Rodney Herner for a 3 point major. We are very proud of our young boy!! LCKC_2_2015 3

Have you heard? From Tina Moulton: At the Golden Gate Kennel Club Show on January 25 th, Riot earned his final major towards his AKC championship by going WD/BOS. He is now Ch. Rovente s Causing a Commotion at Jo-Na-Da ~Photo by 2 Dudes & a Booth I am so proud of my first litter ever! Two BBE AKC Champions! Sister Raya - Ch. Rovente s Ray of Light at Jo-Na-Da - finished at the Yuba City show last fall. I had her out for the first time as a special at Toy Dog, and she was Select Bitch both days, gathering her first two GC points. ~Photo by Vicky Cook I dusted off 5 year old Freebird - Jo-Na-Da s Freebird at Rovente - for the Nor Cal Toy Dog Specialty in San Jose last weekend (Being fresh out of younger class dogs ) - she had not been shown in over two years and I had no idea what to expect from her. To my delight, she showed like she has been on the circuit every weekend, taking WB/BOW both days for 4 points! She now has 9 points with one major. LCKC_2_2015 4

Remembering From Terri Moreno: On January 26, Wilson crossed over the rainbow bridge from Cancer. He never had a fancy name or a list of titles, but helping Wilson overcome separation anxiety and build confidence sparked my passion for training dogs and advocating rescue/adopt. Wilson showed me what could be achieved with positive training and patience. Due to his sensitive and gentle nature we decided competition would be too stressful. Working with Wilson gave me the confidence to get a puppy to train with the goal of competing. Every title and award Eli and I have achieved and will achieve in the future is because I had Wilson. Gentle sleep my sweet boy. To me you will always be World s Best Dog. I miss you. LCKC_2_2015 5

To each and every puppy born into my hands, both past and future... I thought long and hard to select your parents, choosing dogs that had the qualities and strengths I wanted, that were health tested, and were proven to be quality examples of an Italian Greyhound. I anxiously awaited your birth, monitoring your mother all the way through her pregnancy. I worried that she would struggle, I worried she would get sick. I prayed you would be strong and healthy foremost, and if you were pretty that was a bonus. I spent sleepless nights waiting for you to make your appearance into the world, and in some situations spent even more sleepless nights to keep you alive. I raised you very carefully, with the best of food, love, and a warm and pleasant home. You never wanted for anything. From your first breath you owned me. I imagined the future, and paid homage to the past that allowed you to exist. I felt proud when you took your first steps, and I felt the pain when you fell down. I tried my best to make sure you got the best home. I tried to match the best people for your specific personality. In most cases I think I did pretty good. And although I passed you to your new families with sadness, I knew you would go on to an amazing life with them. So my sadness was made easier by knowing you would complete another person's life. If I didn't feel that, I would never have let you leave my arms. I loved you from the moment you were conceived, and I will love you until the day I die. No matter where you live, you will always be my baby. Over the last 30 years my heart has been full and my heart has been broken. And it will keep being that way. I AM PROUD TO BE A BREEDER OF PUREBRED DOGS. Written by Karen Chant, Canadian Kennel Club judge and long time breeder Used with permission. LCKC_2_2015 6
