We promote the responsible breeding of the purebred GSP. We urge members and breeders to accept the standard of the breed approved by the American Kennel Club, as the only standard of excellence. The SHGSP Club conducts Sanctioned Specialty Breed Shows, Obedience Trials, and Field Events held under the Rules and Regulations of the American Kennel Club. Our Club is about Good Sportsmanship - Our members, their enjoyment of the sport and willingness of their dogs. Education - Learning through the exchange of knowledge within the membership. EDITOR'S NOTE We would like to thank those of you who sent in your brags and information for inclusion in the newsletter and ask that everyone who has something that they would like to see in print, please pass it on. Dog Related of course and GSP, club related is even better. We love pictures too, so if you want to show off your beautiful canines, here's a chance. We are more than happy to print litter announcements as well but insist on pictures of the pups, they don't have to be printed if you don't want them to be but the editor has puppyitis and needs to see them. When sending in brags, we ask that you include the dog's registered name, name of the show, location and date, owner, breeder, handler and of course titles and placements. We want them all, Conformation, Obedience, Field Trials, Hunt Tests, etc. This is a versatile breed, and our club has some of the best, let's brag about it. Please send all contributions for the newsletter to Detta Andreana, detta@optonline.net. Thanking you all in advance. AKC S.T.A.R. Spring is in the air and the puppies are blooming so we figured we would take this opportunity to introduce the AKC S.T.A.R Puppy Program to those of you who may not be aware of it. Article below reprinted from AKC.org. Welcome to the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program! At the American Kennel Club, we re not just champion dogs. We re the dogs champion all dogs. We believe that all dogs deserve training and a responsible owner and our goal is to reward responsible dog ownership. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is an exciting new program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is an incentive program for loving dog owners who have taken the time to take their puppies through a basic training class. The Benefits of Training Training classes teach you how to best communicate with your puppy. Organized training classes also provide an opportunity for your dog to socialize with other dogs. In classes aimed at earning the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy distinction, you ll be able to get information on all of your puppy-raising questions including housetraining, chewing, and the most effective way to teach practical skills such as coming when called. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy training is a natural lead in to the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program. S.T.A.R. Puppy How It Works When you complete a basic training class (taught by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator) with your puppy (up to 1 year old) your puppy is eligible to be enrolled in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. You'll attend any puppy or basic training class at least 6 weeks. Your instructor will administer the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test at the end of the course. Upon passing the test, you'll get an application to send to AKC for enrollment in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. All dogs are welcome to participate in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program including purebreds and mixed breeds. Your puppy will receive the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Medal (for display or memento purposes; not suitable as a collar tag). You and your puppy will be listed in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records. In addition, so that you can continue learning, you ll receive our AKC S.T.A.R. WINDHEIM/HIDEAWAY GSPS Balmy Weather in Western NY, but Windheim/Hideaway GSPs take Specialty by Storm! The GSPC of Western NY hosted 2 Specialties on January 12 th & 13th in conjunction with the Nickel City Cluster near Buffalo, NY. Eager to show our young puppies and still seeking that final major to finish Grace, we prayed for good weather and made the trek. Our prayers were answered and then some! The weather was wonderful, nice enough that we even took the dogs to the beach on Lake Erie. Things weren t so bad in the ring either On Saturday, Hideaway N Windheim s Vintage Moonshine, Diane Prohaska s Lina, started things off right by easily winning Best in Sweeps over a nice entry of several pups. Hideaway N Windheim s Mountain Moonshine, Sue Prohaska s Gabby, won her 6-9 Month Puppy class, Lina won the Bred By Exhibitor class, and finally, Windheim s Goodnight Gracie, JH won the Open class. What a delight for me to have the 2 pups I co-bred with Diane and their dam Grace in the Winner s line up! Gracie got the nod for the 4 point major to finish with Lina being awarded Reserve. Mother and daughter, Winners and Reserve, I could ve went home happy right there and then! However, Sunday proved to be even more exciting for us Lina once again went Best in Sweeps. Windheim N Hideaway s Home Brewed, my male pup Brew, decided he wanted a piece of the action and was awarded Winner s Dog, a 3 point major. Gabby again won her Puppy class as Lina did in Bred By. These girls are consistent! With mom out of the way, Lina garnered the 4 point major for Winner s Bitch! In the Best of Breed competition, Brew was awarded Best of Winner s turning his 3 point major into 4. Such a thrill to have these young littermates both recognized, they were just 7 months old at the time! The GSPC of WNY did a fabulous job putting together 2 specialties and 3 supported entries in a short amount of time. Wonderful trophies, an impressive raffle, warm hospitality and great sportsmanship made for a pleasurable weekend! - Denise Avery WHO SAYS DOGS DON'T LIKE CATS? The AKC created an event that allows all dogs to discover the excitement of lure coursing. The Coursing Ability Test (CAT) is for any dog of any breed, including mixed-breeds, as long as it is at least 1 year old and individually registered or listed with AKC. To pass the test, a dog running alone must pursue a lure, completing the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within a given time. Dogs that pass the CAT three times will earn a Coursing Ability (CA) title. Ten passes and a dog earns a Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) title, and 25 passes results in a Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) title. Licensed lure coursing clubs may hold CATs in conjunction with a licensed lure coursing trial or as a standalone event. AKC Coursing Ability Tests do not require dogs to run as far as dogs in lure coursing trials. They also do not have to execute extreme turns, with no turn being more acute than 90 degrees. Dogs under 12-inches at the withers have a course of approximately 300 yards. Dogs more than 12 inches at the withers race approximately 600 yards. The 600-yard course must be completed within 2 minutes and the 300-yard course within 1½ minutes. Upcoming CAT events, as well as a description of the test and the regulations governing the event can be found on the AKC website. 2013 American Kennel Club Page 5
