41 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS 10.45AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Prime Cattle to 204ppk & 1424 Barren Cows to 173ppk & 1286 The better of a couple of very smart Limousin steers (24m) from Jonathan Lentern of Chagford topped the Prime Cattle section at 204ppk with cracking Simmental bred steers (25m) from April Hayden, Kingsbridge close at 200ppk and 1424. Heavy Hereford steers (27m) sold to 1310 for Graham Tancock and Limousin bullocks (24m) from JW & CL Stoneman, Sampford Courtenay totalled 1244. Barren Cows still off the clock with the very best, a young Limousin animal rising to 173ppk for Edwin Tucker and daughter Lynnette of Pennymoor and other Limousins off the same farm to 155 and 145ppk. A tremendous run of barreners from Rob & Sharon Luscombe of South Brent saw Simmental s making 165ppk (x3) and realising to 1286 whilst a pair of well-fed Blue cows from Peter Hooper, Bovey Tracey peaked at 157ppk and 1082. Other top notch Limousin cows fetched 147ppk (x2) for Andrew Cleave, Moretonhampstead and 136ppk for Rob Davis of Chagford also Friesian types sold to 125ppk for Cyril Emmett of Aylesbeare. The sale kicked off averaging around 244-248ppk for the first 3-400 lambs sold, but as phones rang and buyers were informed of numbers and trade elsewhere in the country bidding became more laboured and buyers were increasingly selective. That said, best heavy lambs sold to a premium throughout the sale with Harry Stamp of Highbridge selling a 59kg Hampshire at 125, more overweights at 53-56kg sold to 119 for CA & S Kekwick of Cheriton Fitzpaine, 115 for both Jack Frankum of Exeter and Kevin & Becky Matthews of Launceston and 114.50 for the Derryman family of Yarcombe. A smart pen of 50kg lambs from MA May & Son of Copplestone climbed to 25-32 33-39 40-45 46-52 53+ 22 408 1737 273 20 123.50 and more of the same weight sold at 118 for Graham Sercombe of Cheriton Bishop. Champion exhibit was the first prize single lamb, a 46kg lambs from David Churchill of Axminster that sold at 120 to the judge, another at the same weight and from the same farm from Mrs Joy Churchill sold at 119 and Andy & Wendy Reed of Blackborough sold their 3rd prize single at 118 as well as third prize pairs at 46kgs making 120. Reserve champion Beltex s were the first prize pair, weighing 42kg from Tracey Cobbledick of Bude that realised the top pence per kilo of 276ppk when they made 116, closley followed by other show lambs at 272 & 270ppk for Tracey Pike of Luppitt and 271ppk for Louise Moorhouse of Crockernwell. Away from the show and further pens of 46-47kg lambs sold at 118 for Gordon & Anne Tully of Galmpton, 117 for Richard Brook of Spreyton and 116 for Kevin & Becky Matthews. 45kgs to 111.50 for Melanie Forward of Talaton and 111 for Michael Down of Payhembury as 44kgs rose to 110.50 (for 21 of them) for Alan Weymouth of Salcombe and 110.20 for both David & Susan Warren of South Brent and Richard Brook. Smart 43kg lambs from Andrew & Shaun Carter of Sidmouth peaked at 110.50, 42kg pure Charollais from Nigel Dennis of Ipplepen claimed 106 and Jerry Sanders- Carr of Exminster had 41kgs at 104.50. A smart pen of 40kg Texel cross lambs from first time vendor Colin Pople of Bridgewater topped their weight at 106 (265ppk) and 39kgs reached 96.80 for Jeremy & Jenny Brown of Poltimore. SQQ 234ppk.
19 PRIME HOGGS & MATURE SHEEP Just 19 hoggs and mature sheep saw MS & JS Southwood of Black Dog top at 92.50 while best per kilo went to Robert & Christine Steer of Avonwick with 46kgs at 196ppk ( 90). 749 CULL EWES & 23 RAMS 772 cull ewes and rams were an overall pleasing trade, following reports of much lower ewes prices further North and in Welsh markets today. Best ewes reached 110 for Suffolk s on two occasions, firstly for Henry Derryman & family of Yarcombe and then for P & M Stoyle of East Village. Crossbred ewes to 107, 103 & 102.50 for Adrian & Julie Rich of Totnes, 106.50 for pure Charollais from Steve & Rachel Lang of Plympton whilst Rachel had pure Suffolk s at 104. Others to 105.50 for both Steve & Rachel Stamp of Highbridge and Phil & Peggy Keast of North Tawton and 103.50 for both Geoff Tripp of East Prawle and M& A Partridge of Crediton, with a further 14 pens of ewes over 100. Heavy (but not over-fat) Dorset ewes often trading into the early 90 s Weight Top PRIME HOGGS Average and best of the Mules and Mashams touching 80. Hill ewes just as dear as recently seen with plenty over 50 and only the real plain, lightweight sorts trading less than 35. Rams continuing at recent high levels selling to 122 for a Suffolk from Tom Cleave of Braodhempston, as Charollais sold at 118.50 for Ray & Sylvia Toms of Cheriton Bishop and 118 for Arthur & Rosemary Wrayford of Denbury and a further five sold for three figures.
