FIRE K9.ORG Presents K9 First Aid for Working Dogs Saturday October 9, 2010 9:00 4:00 2303 Shelter Island Dr., San Diego, CA This full-day event will address topics and canine first aid issues of importance to the K9 handler. Normal physical examination parameters and trauma logistics will be explored, along with recognition of a variety of medical and surgical conditions. The afternoon session will consist of demonstrations on general physical examination and orthopedic evaluation, emergency wound management, bandaging, splinting, respiratory and cardiac emergencies, and will include practicing CPR on canine resuscitative mannequins. Topics will include: Basic animal assessment: Normal parameters for the dog, differentiating from the abnormal First aid kit preparation and trauma logistics Recognition and emergency treatment of the following conditions: Shock and cardiac/ respiratory arrest Gastric dilatation/volvulus (bloat) Burns, heat stroke, hypothermia, dehydration Upper airway obstruction and smoke inhalation Head trauma/ocular emergencies Poisoning from commonly encountered agents Orthopedic emergencies fractures, luxations Gunshots, stabbings, penetrating foreign bodies, major lacerations Other medical/surgical problems: Vomiting/diarrhea Arthritis management, strains, sprains, and ligament tears Participants will work in teams with "hands-on" practical training, practicing the basic techniques discussed during the morning session. An informal question and answer session will also be held. Attendees will receive lunch, course reference, and a complete K9 first aid kit ($150 value). Extra K9 first aid kits will be available for purchase. Dr. Paul S McNamara, DVM,DACVS Chief of Surgery at Hudson Highlands Veterinary Medical Group, Dr. Paul S. McNamara attended Cornell University and received his B.S. Degree in Animal Science in 1990. He remained at Cornell and received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1993 and remained at Cornell as an instructor in surgery until 1998. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. McNamara serves as a canine handler and special deputy for the Schenectady City Sheriff s Department. His expertise in recognizing and understanding the conditions of working dogs and the problems they encounter has helped him develop appropriate treatment protocols while safeguarding their health and safety. With extensive experience in canine sports medicine and police dog training, Dr. McNamara volunteers his time traveling around the country training handlers from the Pentagon, FBI, US Customs Department and law enforcement agencies in basic first aid for their K9 partners.
