BRECON CATTLE SALE - FRIDAY 28 TH DECEMBER 2018 446 Store Cattle A very good quality entry for the last sale in 2018 which included several quality types and a wonderful show of strong heifers suitable for breeding. The fat trade has been difficult over recent weeks however there was an exceptional demand at Brecon for all types especially the stronger quality types. Beef trade is expected to improve as numbers tighten and store buyers are optimistic about the future trade. We shall need a good show for January as several units are short of cattle. The best-bred types were all over 250p/kg and there was certainly a premium for quality types and also any heifers suitable for breeding. In general, the heifers would have averaged 210ppk and over 1000 per head which was similar to the steers which averaged 1045 and 204ppk reflecting the strong types on offer. All the regular buyers were forward and nect month we expect increased buyers support with the return of our northern buyers. Several cows were well ahead of any dead weight prices with an average of 119ppk and up to 165ppk and 1300/head and 1290/head. They would have averaged 920/head and we benefitted from 8 competitive buyers who were certainly keener than 4 weeks ago. The dairy cows would have dried up and so demand will ensure prices stabilise and hopefully improve over the next 4 weeks and so cows will be required at the next sale. FRIDAY 28 TH December 2018. 1008 PRIME LAMBS A tremendous entry of prime lambs to finish 2018. Not our normal day and we therefore thank Vendors for going the extra mile to consign stock. The purchasers are also thanked for breaking their normal buying pattern to accommodate this sale. We had worked hard to promote the sale having had very positive feedback from our abattoir customers. It was seriously worth it. The average was better than expected for the quality forward with lambs from across the weight spectrum actively competed for by our quality buyers. The medium lambs were especially well sold averaging 2.19ppk. Smaller lambs were however more difficult to place. We will provide another opportunity to take advantage of the current trade on Tuesday 1 st January 2019. The average was again better than expected for the quality forward with lambs from across the weight spectrum actively competed for by our quality buyers. Smaller lambs were a better trade than last Friday and a large consignment that had travelled from Pembrokeshire were especially well sold on the day. The well meated medium weight lambs produced the best returns per kilo but an improved trade on heavy lambs resulted in the highest considerations.
