Having read the reports from California and Arizona and having just returned from the Eastern Regional in Waynesburg, PA, I am pleased to report that these events were good for the dogs, good for the club and great for the owners, breeders and handlers. We all know the reasons for holding regional specialty shows are many and they vary depending on your place in the fancy. As it was in the beginning, AKC conformation shows, are the best place to evaluate your dogs and compare them to others. For puppy handlers, it may be the first chance for your dog to misbehave in public. All those handling classes and back-yard pretend dog shows just aren t the same as having a real judge, competition and other Giant owners laughing when your puppy decides to have a little fun on the down and backs. Class entries are always chasing majors and even the smallest GSCA regional specialty has a major for somebody. And, of course, the specials get to show that they are indeed, Special! The Waynesburg supported entry drew twenty entries over four days. The Arizona show had seventeen and California had twenty-one. These numbers have prompted a discussion

Message From the President (continued) as to maybe it isn t worth the effort when only twenty or so dogs turn out. I say, Of course it is, and I think I can make a good case for having even more regionals, not fewer. Yes, they are hard work. Ask Ginny Maese and Kim Demchak, ask Daryl Anderson or Maryann Bisceglia or Mike Rutkas. Anybody who has organized and worked through even the smallest regional will tell you that it is a lot of work. Don t forget the herding and tracking and performance events that are just as much work for even fewer entries. Again, all worth the effort. While it was great to see twenty Giant Schnauzers, it was even better to see at least that many GSCA members and former members. A few, like Doloris Wells, I had never met before. Others, like: Pierre Goulet and Marie Papin and Joann Dhanse are always a pleasure to see, if only infrequently. The judges could not have been more gracious and professional and it was truly a pleasure to meet them all. For many of us, outside of the National Specialty, this may be the only time this year we will be together. I think there is a richness of the Regional Dog Show or Performance Event that doesn t happen anywhere else in our sport. Say Hi to each other, have a meal together, a beverage, support your club, your breed and the sport of pure bred dogs. Doug Hill, President, GSCA Support the AKC Political Action Committee The American Kennel Club has taken the lead in supporting legislation across the country that protects the rights of responsible dog owners. The AKC Political Action Committee gives us an additional tool with which to interface with legislators. Through the PAC, we can demonstrate a unity of purpose that helps us advance a positive legislative agenda. The AKC PAC collects voluntary contributions from individuals and uses these donations to support candidates who defend dog owners' rights and can effectively influence legislation impacting animal owners. Your donation will be pooled with contributions from AKC club members across the country to strengthen our support for reasonable, enforceable laws that protect the health and welfare of purebred dogs and do not restrict the rights of breeders and owners who take their responsibilities seriously. (Above information was taken from the AKC website.) If you would like to make an individual donation to the AKC Political Action Committee or want more information, please go to www.akc.org/pac/. We encourage you to support these legislators that are working to protect our rights as dog owners. During the month of September, local and national clubs around the U.S. will be hosting AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days. AKC RDO Days is sponsored by Motel 6. Events such as the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program, AKC CAR Microchipping Clinics, Obedience/Rally/Agility demonstrations, and educational seminars are designed to be fun for the whole family, while promoting responsible dog ownership. The AKC will be hosting its own event in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. For a list of events in your community, please go to www.akc.org/clubs/rdod/events. If your local club would like to participate in this event, registration is due August 1, 2011. All information and forms can be found at www.akc.org/clubs/rdod/. Please support your local kennel club in September. page 2

Telephonic Board Meeting Minutes ~ June 14, 2011 (continued) Permanent Medallion Maryann and Bernie have been working with Jim Gion, the medallion artist, about a smaller coin medallion, maybe in pewter. Bernie met with Jim. The coins can be done with a $1,800-2,000 set up charge, and the coins would be $10-15 each. Jim said that pewter is not a good metal to use for these castings. They do make a nice plastic version with a bronze finish that looks identical, weight being the only difference. The club currently has 4 8, 15 6, 6 4 medallions. Maryann will check with the Poodle club and English Cocker club to see where they get their medallions done. Unfinished Business: AKC Delegate Compensation review Howard sent an expense spreadsheet with proposed compensation for the AKC Delegate. Maryann made a motion to approve the following proposed AKC Delegate compensation: Regular meetings: up to $750 per meeting with a limit of $500 for travel, $250 for lodging and meals; AKC Invitational: up to $1050, with a limit of $500 for travel and $250 +$100 each additional day not to exceed $550 for lodging and meals. Howard seconded. Motion passed unanimously. AKC Delegate There were two interested members, but one withdrew their name due to the financial implications. Doug made a motion to appoint Kim Demchak as the AKC Delegate. Maryann seconded. Motion passed unanimously. 2011 National Specialty Member Questions: Since the National Specialty is a little less than 4 months away, I have a couple of questions that need answering since I have not been able to find information on the specialty website. First of all, it has been noted on the AKC web site that our National Specialty is pending judges approval. What exactly does this mean? All foreign judges have to be voted on. The AKC Board will be voting on Wilfried Lohmann mid-june. Also, will Premium Lists be sent out this year to all club members? Yes, the premium will be sent to all club members. Electronically to those who have email on file; by mail to the people on the roster that have requested to be sent all club correspondence by mail; and those who specifically request that a premium be mailed. There will be information in this month s newsletter addressing this. This process saves an estimated $500 and is a financially prudent use of the funds available for this specialty. Lastly, I have not found information on the specialty website concerning the banquet, RV parking and related costs. All costs will be published in the June newsletter. Also, could you please let me know when the members will most likely see information on the events happening in October for the Giant Schnauzer specialties. Event information can be found on the 2011 National Specialty website, as well as upcoming newsletters. 2011 Eastern Regional Specialty Maryann is getting a headcount for a dinner Saturday evening. 2012 National & Southern Regional Specialty (July 5-8, 2012) Kathleen and Cristi are working with the Holiday Inn on room reservations. Gabriel and Trevor are going to do the Sweepstakes. 2013 National Specialty Working on nailing down the Obedience judges. page 9
