Jefferson County had 20 participants in the following age groups: Junior-Recurve Bow (9 meters): Rebekah Bergeron (1st); Bare Bow: Adult Leader Fundraiser This annual fund raiser supports the activities and events of the Jefferson County 4-H program. The date of the event is April 22, 2017, and we will put the dinners together. We will do presales which consist of brisket dinners and ribs, either 1 slab or 2. We will also have a 4-H BBQ Queen and/or King from each club and then an overall BBQ Queen and King will be chosen. Continue to watch the newsletter for more information. Information and tickets have been given to your club managers to distribute to you at your next meeting. Good luck to all those 4-Her s participating in State competitions in June. April 1st. In April all tickets and/or money will need to be turned in to the Extension office by April 11th. Also there will be a drawing for a BBQ grill. The cost of the ticket for the drawing is $1. This will be a huge fundraising effort which will require everyone s help and cooperation. So mark your calendars for April 22nd to help during the event and sell those tickets. Thanks to ASCO for sponsoring our grill this year. IMPORTANT REMINDER: For Junior Rabbit Meat Pens Youth must raise rabbits as a project of 4-H or FFA. This means, you may not go out at this point & buy rabbits. Clubs Corner... Lucky Clover 4-H Club delivering Valentine bags. District 9 Council Community Service As part of the D9 Community Service project we will help collect Books and Blankets. So start collecting new or lightly used books and new blankets for children ages k-8th. All items will be donated to Smart Family Literacy. Jefferson County collected the most items for the Music to Memory community service last year and brought home the sweepstakes trophy. Lets do it again! You have until May 8th to get the items to the Extension office. Club meetings: In order to show in county, district or state events as well as livestock shows, you must attend your monthly club meetings, not just your project meetings. Missing two consecutive meetings makes you ineligible. Please notify your club manager if you will miss a meeting. Lucky Clover 4-H delivered Love Bags to the residents of Nome. The club has been doing this community service since the club started over 30 years ago and is still going strong. month. (see picture at left) 2017 South Texas State Fair The South Texas State Fair will be held on March 30-April 9, 2017. Here is a list of important dates and changes, etc: All steers must be dehorned before the start of the fair s weigh-in. Weight change on swine: 240-280, plus or minus 10. Over weight or under weight will be disqualified. New: Nurse cows are allowed on show grounds New: No pets are allowed in the barn, with the exception of service animals. New: No one will be allowed to assist or instruct exhibitors from outside the show ring while show is in progress. New: No animal on exhibition may be removed from the grounds without special order given by the Livestock Chairman or Superintendent. New: The Livestock Committee will inspect all sale animals for proper care. Failure to feed, water and care for your animals will result in forfeit of all premium and sale monies, and may be barred from any future show or event of the South Texas State Fair. New for 2018: F-1 ownership to mirror steers. Change in Meat Pen weights: Min. weight 31/2 lbs; Max weight 5 1/2 lbs. Change in Open Poultry: Entries will close the 1st Thursday in March of current year; Late entries will be accepted with a $10 late fee. Fair book with rules and guidelines is available on-line, www.ymbl.org. Please read the rules and guidelines especially ones pertaining to the animal(s) you are showing. District 4-H Conference Big Time In D9 The annual District 4-H Conference in which all the district events will be held is on May 12 & 13 in Conroe. For those of you that participated in the County Food Show, Fashion Show or Roundup (Share-the- Fun & Educational Presentations) and those that want to participate in S.E.T: Research Poster Contest, Photography Contest, Photography Judging, Fashion Story Boards (turned in by April 4th to the 4-H office), Duds to Dazzle, BBQ Cook-off, Hamburger Cook-off, Leaders 4Life, Ag Product ID Contest, Healthy Lifestyles, Consumer Decision Making, Quiz Bowls, Produce Judging, Food Challenge and Wildlife Challenge, then this conference is for you. ALL PARTICIPANTS of the Fashion Show, Fashion Show and Roundup are eligible to represent Jefferson County at District. There are also educational workshops, invitationals and fun for everyone! You don t have to be entered into a contest to participate. Some of the sessions and activities are: Robotics, Pinewood Derby (see next page) & Vet Science Skillathon. All entry paperwork will need to be turned by: Fashion Show, April 5th; Food Show, by April 17th. All of you participating will need to register by April 16th via 4-H Connect. You all have profiles, so if you are not sure of the password please call the Extension office before the deadline so we can help. We will need volunteer judges for this huge event. If you would like to help, let me know and we will notify the District office. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to call, 835-8461. Horse Validation Major Show Tag Orders It s that time of year again for major show tags: Swine: If you are interested in showing pigs in Dallas you will need to order validation tags in April. Please call if interested. Lamb/Goat: If you are interested in showing a lamb or goat in Dallas you will need to order validation tags in April. Please call if interested. Steer: If you are planning to show steers in ANY of the major shows, Houston, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Dallas, etc., you will need to order steer tags. The cost of each tag is $10.00 and due when you place your order. The deadline to order tags is April 18th. No tags will be ordered without payment in advance. Please call the 4-H office, 409-835-8461, if you have any questions. If you are planning to participate in the District or State Horse Show you will need to validate your horse(s) by April 14th and cost $10 for each. If you register from April 15th May 1st, it s $20 per horse. The District Horse Show is scheduled for June 20-22, 2017. You will need to register your horse on Volume 15, Issue 3 4-H Connect. If you validated your horse last year, you do not need to upload pictures, etc. But, if this is your first year, you will need to upload pictures and registration papers. Project News Food Challenge or Food & Nutrition Quiz Bowl If you are interested in learning more about this contest or participating, please call 409-835-8461. I will give the project leader your information and she will e-mail you with meeting location, day and time. Horse project The Horse project will meet at Tyrrell Park Stables, May 21, June 25; Sundays from 2 to 5. With riding from 3 to 5 which cost $15 per person. Gardening project - The Gardening Project started on February 12th at the El Vista Community Center, 615 Ellias St, Port Arthur. The meetings will be held each month, Mar. 5th, April 9th & May 7th, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Open to all 4-H members. Livestock Skillathon The next Livestock Skillathon will be on March 2nd, 6:30 at the Extension office. This is a fun project so come out and see what its about. Montgomery County Dog Show On February 4th, 3 4-Her s participated in the Montgomery County Dog Show in Conroe. Ashlin Jackson placed 3rd in Showmanship; Kyra Sobutka placed 3rd in Conformation and Mallory Crabtree placed 2nd in Showmanship & Photography (Dog/Still Life) and 4th in Conformation. Congratulations to you all! Brazos County Dog Show The Brazos County Dog Show was held on February 18th and the following 4 Her s par cipated: Ashlyn Jackson and Swee e (4th in Mixed Breed over 54lbs Conforma on, 3rd in Pre Novice Showmanship, par cipated in Costume contest); Elsie Morris Thomas (4th in Mixed Breed 25lbs and under Conforma on, 6th in Mixed Breed 26 to 54 Conforma on, 3rd in Novice Showmanship, 6th in Novice Obedience, 2nd in Pre Novice Agility Jumpers); Mallory Crabtree (5th in Mixed Breed 25lbs and under Conforma on, 4th in Pre Novice Showmanship, par cipated in Pre Novice Obedience, 4th in Pre Novice Agility Jumpers, 9th Novice Rally); and Kyra Sobutka (6th in Mixed Breed over 54lbs Conforma on, 5th in Pre Novice Showmanship, par cipated in Pre Novice Obedience, 5th in Pre Novice Agility Jumpers, 10th Novice Rally). Great job 4 Her s! IMPORTANT: The Robotics Day Camp has been postponed due to the facility being unavailable and trainer not being available until later in the summer. The event will be rescheduled.
