BDOC is run exclusively by members volunteering their time to help. Interested in volunteering? Skills we are looking for include administration, cleaning, grounds maintenance, information technology, weeding, events assistants, shed tidying, catering for events, class assistants, instructors and lots more. Volunteer as little or as much as you like and are able to. Every bit helps and you get the chance to make more doggie friends. See the BDOC office if you would like to join our volunteer group. EDITOR S NOTE It s been a very busy few months at BDOC! The office has weathered through the usual increase in activity in June and July as members renew their memberships (if you haven t renewed yours, you re overdue to do so!). The roadworks on Flemington Road have continued, hopefully you haven t been too disturbed by the continual changes to the Morisset Road intersection. The Club has just hosted an agility trial and an obedience trial, and our Flyballers have been racing up a storm. We are now in our fourth session of canine companion classes for the year, and I d like to extend a big welcome to our new Beginner teams and other new members. I hope that you and your families (dogs included of course) enjoy their time with us as much as Chloe and Tango (pictured) have (and still do)! I d also like to say a very big thank you to the previous editors of the BDOC Newsletter, Kate and Rochelle. The newsletter editor job is a tough (but fun) one, and we are always on the look out for material to publish. If you d like to make a submission (articles, photos, etc), please email it to news@bdoc.asn.au. Maelyn A very big thank you to our Session 3 instructors: Alex Stalker-Booth, Ange Gintings, Angela Hagedorn, Anne Lewis, Cheryl Neal, Dorothy Xu, Elan Chesher, Fiona Fraser, Geoff Tracey, Geoff Woodman, Heather Swinbourn, Jane Wild, Janet Almond, Jenny O Connor, Jo Parker, Jody Murchie, John Sam, Julie Rebbeck, Kristy Bryden, Laurajane Smith, Leanne Holgate, Lyn Clyde, Lyndal Hasselman, Maelyn Draper, Marty Gardner, Melissa Snape, Meryl Causebrook, Niccola Hardaker, Pam McDougall, Rhyanna Boyce, Robert Lawson, Ross Miller, and Steve Meyer. ABOUT THE CLUB The Belconnen Dog Obedience Club (BDOC) was formed in 1975 to provide dog training instruction and facilities for people living in northern Canberra. The Club s main activity is our canine companion classes, which teach basic obedience and valuable life skills to pet dogs and their families. Our canine companion classes are open to fully vaccinated dogs of all breeds. We also offer training in dog sports including agility, dances with dogs, flyball, trialling obedience, and rally obedience, and have many teams ranging from beginners to the top trial and competition levels. The aims of our Club include: Having fun with our dogs Promoting responsible dog ownership Helping our members to become proficient dog trainers in general obedience, and also in the dog sports of their choice Helping our members to develop enjoyable relationships with their dogs Promoting the pursuit of recognised dog sports BDOC is supported with much appreciated financial assistance from ACT Sport and Recreation Services and the Department of Education and Training ACT. Our Club is staffed and run by a terrific group of volunteers, from the Club s Committee, office and shop workers, to our incredibly dedicated team of instructors. If you have enjoyed your time at BDOC, please consider volunteering! We are always on the look out for helpers for our various trials and events, and we run training for new canine companion instructors twice a year in January and June. If you re interested, please email the Club at bdoc@bdoc.asn.au. FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA! FROM THE AGM - PRESIDENT S REPORT Written by Lyn Clyde I would like to start by thanking the current committee, they do an amazing job. Our Secretary Maelyn Draper, Vice President Felicia Tracey, Treasurer Chris Bates, all spend countless hours in the service of this club. I thank you personally for the support you have given me this year. I d like to also thank the sports coordinators and general members on Committee: Heather Swinbourn (Dances with Dogs), Fiona Fraser (Agility), Marty Gardner (Flyball), Natalie Winslade, Geoff Tracey and Margo Hellyer. We have had some lively discussions and made progress towards building a better club. Some of those discussions have included a review of our business plan and other club documents. We have reviewed our Social Media Policy, providing the dog sport social media moderators with more specific guidelines on how to deal with inappropriate social media activity. These rules govern all of the Club s pages, websites, and Facebook groups. We have also reviewed and updated the out of hours ground use rules. The review has made it clearer that demonstration of having control over the dog requires evidence. The rules now require handlers to be able to demonstrate their ability to have control over their dog by a pass at Bronze level. Previously, new members with beginner dogs could sign up and have access to after-hours use without having completed beginners. The Committee is more stringent in its vetting of applications for this privileged access, approving (or not) applications at Committee meetings. So, we have made it tougher to get, but it is a privilege, not a right, to be able to use the grounds to train and exercise our dogs in a safe environment. It is not a public dog park. This is a club for its members. We have also made the rules fairer and more logical. Current participating club members can register their new dogs when they register them for the next intake, making them financial members and allowing the new dog on the ground as well. The condition, and expectation, is that the new dog will commence classes as soon as practicable. It also provides for people with older retired dogs to continue to use the grounds without unintentionally breaking the attendance of 70% of classes rule. Items on the business plan such as increasing membership are dependent on other activities, particularly increasing the numbers of active instructors in the Club. We have run two instructors courses this year, (I attended the first one this year as a general refresher). It is a pleasure to now be instructing with some of those people and chatting to them in the other instructors room that would be the garage - before and after class. If anyone has any ideas on how to increase participation in instructing, and getting more people out on the grounds instructing, please let me or anyone on the Committee know. The Committee is always open to new ideas on these issues. The club hosted a workshop with Peta Clark who did sessions on shaping behaviour, Treibball (like doggy soccer, but with their nose!) Noseworks (scent detection) and a session called when it all goes south which had a number of participants and their dogs unwanted behaviour analysed by Peta and the whole group to work out ways of getting the right behaviour. DOG SPORT HIGHLIGHTS! BDOC took a bit of a lead at the EPIC Dog Sport Extravaganza in July. We arranged the transportation of the flyball and the agility equipment to the venue. The Belconnen Bullets ran two single day flyball competitions in the Fitzroy Pavilion over the weekend of the Extravaganza, and BDOC members also managed the very successful DWD, Rally O and Obedience trials. I don t think this is simply due to our proximity to Exhibition Park. I think it is due to our commitment to our dogs and the activities we do with them. And, more importantly, our desire to be able to demonstrate to the public the positive benefits of participating in these activities with our dogs. FLYBALL BDOC was awarded Flyball Club of the Year by the Australian Flyball Association at its AGM earlier this month. This is a national award. Volume 10 / Issue 2 / September 2017 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB 4

AGILITY Demand for agility is increasing at BDOC. We have approximately 60 teams registering annually to start agility training and each of our biannual intakes have been full. Our training program and equipment have been boosted in response to new developments. Instructor Barbara Brown became an agility judge. The number attending our biannual trials and quarterly ribbon trials are growing. There were approximately 400 runs at the trial last weekend. TRIALLING OBEDIENCE Interest in trialling obedience has been strong throughout the year, and we have welcomed quite a few new teams into the CCD and Novice level class. BDOC members have run, stewarded at, and competed in trials at BDOC and also through Dogs ACT, and we have our second obedience trial for the year scheduled for this Saturday. We have had some difficulties in securing an instructor for the colder months, and many thanks goes to everyone who s stepped in to help run the class. RALLY OBEDIENCE In the past year we have had two intakes for rally obedience, and from these we have a number of teams going on to compete in their first rally trials and gaining passes and titles. We have had at least one team finish off their Rally Masters title, which was only introduced last year. Training continues to go well with good attendance and we look forward to another great year. Many thanks goes to our instructors and organisers, especially Maelyn Draper, Anne Lewis and Cheryl Neal. DANCES WITH DOGS Membership has increased substantially over the past year and we now regularly have 10 or more attendees. The use of the clubhouse during bad weather has greatly assisted in retaining numbers over the winter months. Due to the increase in numbers and to provide both new starters and more advanced and trialling handlers adequate practice time, we have recently moved to two training components: a tricks/ behaviours class and a choreography/ competition class. Over the 2016-17 year we have held two competitions at BDOC. These attracted a small number of local competitors as well as one or two interstate competitors. DWD also provided two performances at Pooch Affair on 17 June 2017. Judges numbers have remained static, with five ACT Judges and we have held two Judges training events over the year with a further session planned for September. We are consistently praised for hosting well organized, amenable and welcoming competitions! Club members both in DWD and from other sports assist at the competitions which is very much appreciated. CHANGES TO THE SHOP The Shop has undergone a significant refit this year and is looking very good, with all items easy to see. Thanks to Janice and Marty for their efforts here, and tanks too to Bev who looked after the shop for such a long time. The shop is a very valuable service that BDOC offers to its members. OTHER NEWS On a sad note, Ray Leckie, a life member of BDOC and shop manager for many 1st Prize ifetch Too years, passed away this year. The Club plans to honour Ray s service to BDOC by planting a tree in his honour. Ray had Golden Retrievers and his last, Princess, stayed by his empty bed after he had gone. Princess and Ray were devoted to one another. Our end of year instructor and volunteer s dinner this year will be raising money for Golden Retriever Rescue in memory of Ray. Thanks to all the volunteers and instructors who put such a lot of time into the Club and its activities. Thank you! TRAINING TIPS FROM THE COMMITTEE The BDOC Committee for 2017-2018 was elected at the AGM held earlier this month. We asked them for some of their top training tips! Sandra Franceschini, Canine Companion Rep Owned by Boo the Kelpie x (DWD, trialling obedience, and rally) Remember your dog feels your emotions and can feed off you. Rather than set up for a bad session when you re tired or stressed have 5 minutes of play, throw a ball. Positive training! Maelyn Draper, Secretary, Obedience and Rally Rep Owned by Chloe the Pug x Jack Russell and Tango the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (agility, trialling obedience, rally) Always question if your dog is actually learning what you re trying to teach it. Train cleanly and consistently, and keep your end goal in mind. Alex and Claire Stalker-Booth, General Members Owned by many Cavaliers, Lottie (rally), Lucas (rally), Lizzie (agility and rally), and Skye the Kelpie (agility and rally) Keep training times short. Training in a commercial break when watching to is a great way to make sure you don t train for too long. Geoff Tracey, General Member Owned by Ollie and Ruby the twin Cavalier x Poodles, and Otto the Lagotto Always train when you re in a good mood as your dog will pick up on your energy! And lots of treats always helps! Lyndal Hasselman, Canine Companion Rep Owned by Kudu the Standard Schnauzer (agility), and Nickel the Weimaraner (canine companion) Play your way through training so your dog and you can laugh off your whoopsies together. Listen to what your dog is telling you... and then obey. Marty Gardner, General Member Owned by Bella the Jack Russell x Mini Fox Terrier (flyball), Ruby the Jack Russell (flyball), and Monty the Jack Russell (canine companion) Be calm & patient & don t give up. Love your dogs! Christine Bates, Treasurer Owned by Bo the Beagle (flyball), and Jack the Kelpie x (flyball and disc dogs) Don t call a scent dog to come to you until they lift their nose off the ground (otherwise you are calling for a dog who is not going to come). Remember to play with your dog when they have done what you wanted as this will entice them to achieve this task again for you. Margo Hellyer, Vice President Owned by Rory the Fox Terrier x (agility) Train in very short bursts and make it fun for the dog - they should see training as a fun game with you. AGILITY TRIAL REPORT - SAT 19 AUGUST Written by Fiona Fraser The day of the BDOC agility trial on August 19 2017, it was cloudy and overcast. If anything, the cool conditions just made the dogs more excited. Hard to hold your stay when you just want to run and jump and have fun! The courses set by our Victorian judges were very conducive to letting the dogs do exactly that but they required some good handling skills and well-trained dogs who would listen to their handler. Once the judge has indicated you can go, you leave your dog behind the first obstacle and get into position. The handler needs to ensure their shoulders are pointing in the right direction or whoops... you are subject to an immediate disqualification when your dog goes into the wrong end of the tunnel! That s the art of agility it requires real team work so that you, as the dog s guide, can ensure they take the right course. As you wait for your turn, you mentally go through the course in your head, trying to remember the turns and signals that you have to give your dog. Your dog knows it s a trial and is champing at the bit to go. You breathe deeply as you enter the ring and try to keep your dog calm, but before you know it you are off. It all happens so quickly, but every now and again there is that magic moment when you and your dog are running totally in sync and you get to the end of the course and the judge utters those magic words clear round. Whoopee it s celebrations all around! And if one dog in the agility ring is fun, what happens when you have 2 dogs and 2 handlers? That s the joy of strategic pairs. Underlining that agility is about having fun with your dogs, many agility competitions include games as well as the standard agility and jumping courses. Two games were held at our trial strategic pairs and snooker. In pairs, 2 handlers and 2 dogs must work out how to navigate the set course within a given time frame. Your partner starts and you try to listen for their call indicating it is your turn. But your dog is excited and just wants to join in with all the fun the other dog is having. You are watching your dog, but all of a sudden, they are distracted and off to follow the other dog into the tunnel, over the dog walk oh dear it s all going to pot and everyone standing around the sidelines is killing themselves laughing at your frantic efforts to get it back on track! Finally, you do get your dog back to the task on hand but oh no, it s too late. You are over time! But you can t help but laugh. There is always next time. And what can you say about snooker? First you must do a red jump and then Photo by Robyn Bromley an obstacle, then another red jump and an obstacle, and then a final red jump and obstacle before going into the closing sequence where you must run the course in the order the judge has set. The red jumps are usually indicated by a red flag not so easy to get red flags. Belconnen added a touch of class (or obscenity depending on your perspective) by finding a unique Volume 10 / Issue 2 / September 2017 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB 7

identifier (see photo). No mistaking which were the red jumps. Before you know it, the day is over and you are totally exhausted. If you are lucky you have a magic qualification card to take home, but more importantly, you have had a terrific day with friends, particularly your best friend! Thank you to our judges, James Brown and Geoff Taylor, our wonderful trial manager Charlie Giles, and our stewards on the day - Flea Tracey, Caroline Lemerle, Julie Hawthorne, John Willo, Janet Speed, and Trang Nguyen. What is Trialling Obedience? Trialling Obedience is one of the oldest ANKC sports. An obedience round consists of a number of exercises, all of which you must pass in order to qualify. Some of the exercises include heelwork patterns (initially on lead, then off lead as you progress up the levels), being steady for examination by the judge, recalls, and group stays. Sound familiar? Many of our canine companion exercises are actually derived from obedience exercises. As you move up the levels, there are challenging new exercises to teach your dog, such as body position changes at a distance, jumping, retrieving, and a variety of scent discrimination exercises. Trialling Obedience can be a lot of fun, especially the way that we train it at BDOC! We want our dogs to be super happy and enthusiastic, so we train with lots of rewards and fun games. BDOC BOOTY CLASS On Saturday mornings from 8-9am, the BDOC paddocks and a small group of members and their dogs get together for a good workout and thorough going over. Led by fully qualified personal trainer Colleen Ebsworth, dogs and their owners exercise together. The dogs absolutely love it, it s a lot of fun and a good workout for both dog and handler! Colleen tailors the activities to accommodate both the dog s and the owner s physical fitness levels and limitations. Colleen understands the importance of both owner and dog fitness and flexibility to support good performance in the various dog sports offered by BDOC. COOKIE DOUGH FUNDRAISER Choose from 10 gourmet flavours. Place your order online https://cookiedough. com.au/home/?gid=155 or grab an order form from the Office. Orders must be received by September 30th. The BDOC Booty Class has been running for a year, and the fact that it is still going is testament to the value of these classes for members and their dogs. In the first class run under this program, a very timid and frightened dog was bought along to participate. This dog had been rescued and had been subjected to severe physical injuries by other dogs in their past. Over the course of 10 weeks, the dog regained some level of confidence and was able to interact with most other dogs and handlers in the group. While canine socialisation is not the primary purpose of the classes, it was a bonus outcome for both the dog and handler. This was only attempted as the class contained a couple of BDOC voluntary trainers. INTERESTED IN WHAT WE DO? Why not pop down one Saturday morning and come and have a chat to Colleen? Or better yet, book in at the BDOC office! Classes are $20 per session, but you must book in as classes are capped at 10 handlers and their dogs. Colleen acknowledges that many dog sport competitions are held on Saturday, so a week by week arrangement works better, however there is a minimum of 4 participants per week for the class to run. * Classes are for club members & their dogs only * Dogs must have obtained their Bronze certificate CHRISTMAS PUDDING & WINE FUNDRAISER BDOC will be running our always popular Christmas Pudding and Wine fundraiser, featuring award winning puddings by Newcastle s Pudding Lady. Please visit the Office to grab an order form. Orders much be received by Thursday 19th October. Volume 10 / Issue 2 / September 2017 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB 18
