It seems that summer has flown past. Your NETC Board has been busy! We have submitted our application to the AKC for advancement to A level status. We should hear from them any day now whether they have given us approval. For those of you that might be interested in looking at them, I will bring to our next events the club s copies of our applications for both B and A status that we have submitted to the AKC. They provide an interesting history of the club. We also have two activities coming up soon, an Earthdog Training Day for members and friends on October 22 nd, and a Nose Work Seminar on November 5 th. I hope many of you will be able to attend. Remember that space for dogs is limited in the Nose Work Seminar, so don t delay in sending in your entry. I look forward to seeing you soon and playing with our terriers! Mary October 2011 Issue

The New England Terrier Club Invites You to An Introduction to K9 Nose Work With Carolyn Barney, CNWI (certified nose work instructor w/nacsw) On November 5, 2011 at 1:00 pm At the Dogs Learning Center 577 Main St., Hudson, MA What is K9 Nose Work? (From www.nacsw.net) K9 Nose Work is a great outlet for dogs of ALL types. Nose Work is a fun way to let your dog be a dog while you have great fun watching. Nose Work often benefits shy & fearful dogs and is open to dogs that are reactive near other dogs. FUN and Easy to practice and wear out your dog s brain and body! K9 Nose Work is the specific sport created and sanctioned by the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW). This sport was inspired by the training methodology of detection K9s and borrows elements of that training for recreation. The terms nose work, fun nose work, scent work, search work are all commonly used references to describe any activity where the dog is using its nose to locate a target scent or odor. K9 Nose Work is the term that defines this detection inspired sport that has evolved from the pursuit of many dogs (with their handlers) to practice nose work and have fun. Come and find out what the fun is all about! Carolyn will give a demonstration and explanation of Nose Work. This will be followed by a chance for your dogs to try it out.

Carolyn Barney has been training and doing behavior work, and competing and titling dogs for over 28 years in obedience, conformation, tracking, earth dog and k9 nose work. Carolyn is now a CNWI (certified nose work instructor for the NACSW National Association of Canine Scent Work). For the past 16 years she has concentrated on agility, titling multiple dogs. Her current competitive agility dog, Parson Russell Terrier, "Steiff", has completed his USDAA ADCH title, AKC MACH, NADAC NA, NAJ, NAG, and his ME. He has qualified for the AKC and USDAA Nationals each year since 2002 and competed in a number of national events. Steiff now has his Nose Work Level 1 title and is prepping for level 2 competition. Kodi & Breezy, Carolyn s Border collies are in training and competing in agility and playing with herding and nose work and having a blast! Along with her training and behavior work, Carolyn wrote Clicker Basics for Dogs and Puppies and has another agility foundation book on the way for Clean Run Productions. Carolyn also has available from Clean Run Instructor Conference, 2 DVD s, one on Agility Foundation and one on Scaredy Dogs. Carolyn co-taught two canine cognition/behavior courses at Harvard University Extension School with Bruce Blumberg PhD, lectures to dog trainers occasionally and works as a behavior consultant for the MSPCA, Nevins Farm, providing Reactive Dog Training classes and behavior therapy for shelter dogs and their families. Did anyone receive an Important notice about the AKC Gazette? It appears that the Gazette is being reformatted effective October 2011 to an electronic format. The last printed magazine as we know it, will be the September 2011 edition. Breaking News: 70 Malls Across US To Ban Pet Sales October 11, 2011 GLOBAL ANIMAL EXCLUSIVE, by Madison Rootenberg Global Animal just received news that shopping center developer Macerich is banning sales of live animals in more than 70 malls across the US. This new humane policy designed to break the puppy mill business chain is taking effect nationwide within 30 days. Macerich confirmed that they will not renew the leases of existing pet stores that sell animals and in their place, are opening humane stores offering adoptions of rescued pets. Some of the high profile shopping malls include Los Angeles Westside Pavilion, which is opening a rescue store this month in association with the nonprofit Friends of LA Shelters, Scottsdale s Fashion Square, Chesterfield Towne Center in Richmond, Virginia, and Santa Monica Place....
