WHAT ARE RAT SPORTS? Rat Sports are based on hunting and teamwork skills. Historically, rat catchers and their dogs offered their services to farmers to control vermin, helping to conserve and to preserve their grain and consequently protect the inhabitants from disease. The purpose of the Barn Hunt and the Brush Hunt events is to demonstrate teamwork between the handler and dog team. The dog must display his vermin hunting ability by finding and marking rats in a barn-like or field-like setting in which straw/hay bales are used. The handler must display his ability to read the dog s signal. TRAINING/PRACTICE/WORKSHOPS/FUN MATCHES At the present time, information available for all rat sports events in Quebec and Ontario is on a Facebook group called Rats! Canada so make sure to join the Facebook page to be informed of all unsanctioned events available before K9SportsFest, to learn and practice the sport. If you are not on Facebook send an email to ratsportscanada@gmail.com to be added to our mailing list. Website is under construction but you will be advised when it is available. BRUSH HUNTING Brush Hunting relies completely on your dog s ability to locate a live quarry. Brush Hunts are usually held outside in a wooded or fallow fenced area. The size of the area is determined by the level of difficulty. The higher the level, the bigger the area the dog must search. Only one tube containing a live rat is used for this event. The tube must remain in the same position for every team, and the handler is told where the quarry is before competing. The tube is totally out of sight, covered slightly in leaves or branches or straw. The judge stops the timer when he considers that the dog indicates, in a satisfactory fashion, the presence of the rat. Two (2) minutes are allocated to find the rat. During the first minute, only the dog is allowed in the ring. The handler must remain at the entrance on the designed mat and wait for permission to enter the ring and to help his dog for the remaining minute. The handler may direct his dog to the area where the rat is located. Under no circumstances he may touch the dog or the tube as this results in automatic disqualification. The handler may encourage his dog the whole time but directional cues will lead to disqualification, as the judge wants to evaluate the ability of the dog to locate the live quarry. Completing a run in less than 2 minutes is considered a pass and scores will be used for placement, however, your dog has to find the rat in the first minute to earn a qualification. Qualifying in your first or second ever sanctioned novice brush hunt run leads to Brush Hunting Instinct Title.

BARN HUNTING Barn Hunting requires good communication with your dog and its ability to discriminate odors and live animals. Barn Hunts are held either indoors or outdoors. The land or building used is defined by fences or walls. Depending on the level of difficulty, many tubes may be used. These can be empty, or containing either rats and/or rat litter. The size of the ring is the same for all levels of competition. Tubes are hidden in bales of hay. The tubes must be in plain view of the handler and the judge, being more or less visible depending on the competition level. The Team is allocated 2 minutes to find the rat/s. The handler and the dog enter the ring at the same time. The handler can give one verbal command then must remain silent for the first 30 seconds while the dog hunts. Afterwards, the handler may encourage and direct his dog verbally. The handler is responsible to make the timer stops, calling Rat! to the judge, when he believes that his dog has found a rat. Should the team be in error and have identified a wrong tube, the timer will continue and 5 seconds will be added to the final time of the test. Touching the dog before the judge confirms that the last rat tube is found or touching a tube that has not yet been identified leads to an automatic disqualification. You may however pet your dog shortly after he has found a rat tube. The tube(s) where the rats are hidden are switched places for each participant. At the novice level, there are 3 tubes: 1 rat, 1 litter and 1 empty and clean. Completing a run in less than 2 minutes is considered to PASS and goes for placement but your run must be fault-free to earn your qualification. Qualifying in your first or second ever sanctioned novice barn hunt run leads to Barn Hunting Instinct Title. GO-TO-GROUND / SUPER EARTH (Coming soon!) For physically able dogs that are 15 or less at the withers, sanctioned artificial terrier hunting events will be soon offered. This is an event that simulates a hunting situation. The dog traverses a 9 x 9 tunnel to reach a quarry (usually a caged live rat) at the end of the tunnel. The tunnel has one or several 90 degrees turns to make it harder for the dog. The dog must reach the quarry as fast as possible but also mark it for a determined amount of time without leaving it. Acceptable marking can include barking, whining, staring and scratching. Completing a run without exiting the tunnel and marking the quarry for at least 5 seconds is considered a pass but to qualify, marking is usually from 30 to 90 seconds depending on the level. Q runs will place before passed runs for placement, even with a longer tunnel time. Qualifying in one of your first three ever sanctioned novice go-to-ground hunt run leads to Terrier Hunting Instinct Title.

Tentative Event schedule (judging assignments TBD) 8:00 to 8:45am Mandatory check-in for all morning classes 8:45am General meeting for all novice Brush and Barn Hunt participants 9:15 to 11:30 am Brush and Barn Hunts, Puppy and Novice Classes 11:45 am Morning Awards Presentations 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Lunch Break and building for afternoon events Mandatory check-in for all afternoon classes 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm General meeting for all advanced Brush and Barn Hunt participants 1:30 to 4:00pm Brush and Barn Hunt, Advanced Classes 4:15pm Awards Presentations 4:30 End of day FEO runs will be allowed in Novice Classes only, as time permits, without RATS! Canada dog ID. There is no pre-registration for FEO runs. Each run is 12$ payable on site, only if no dogs are waiting for sanctioned runs and an assistant judge is available. There will be no awards for unsanctioned events. Dogs that are entered in a sanctioned event cannot run FEO before the sanctioned run, and can do one FEO run per event. Failing to respect this rule leads to disqualification for all events offered for the day, with no refunds given. PLEASE NOTE: - Running order will be based on check-in time. You are expected to be present at ringside, or nearby, during the time period when your class or event is being offered. If you are not present when your dog is called, you will be bumped to the end of the running order, and may miss your turn if you are not present the second time your name is called. Barn hunt will start after Brush Hunt has started to allow for minimum changes to the running order. - Registration table is not guaranteed to be open after check-in time and this could lead to a missed run. - If you run more than one dog, you will be asked to let at least 3 other dogs go between your own dogs. - Ring will close and judge will leave at the announced time. It will not be possible to credit the missed run for another event or day.

- Puppies may search on long lines though the handler is not allowed to guide the search using the leash. Adult dogs must search off leash in the enclosed area. - No choke, pinch or electric collars are permitted within proximity of the ring. A Baskerville muzzle may be used for a reactive dog. Trial Information This sanctioned trial is held under RATS! CANADA rules and regulations. All events are RATS! CANADA recognized and approved. You will receive an e-booklet with rules and regulations prior to the trial date. A hard copy will be available at the secretary s table for consultation during the event. All dogs must be kept in an x-pen, crate or on leash when not in the ring. Any dog engaging in aggressive behavior at any time will be required to leave trial venue. In such cases, no refund of fees will be paid. Entries and Closing Date Entries must be received by October 5 th. No telephone, fax or electronic entries will be accepted. Entries can be taken day of trial only if event is not full. Any changes to entries, including cancellations, will be accepted until closing date. A dog that ran with a Junior Handler cannot run again with an adult handler other than as a fun run. Dog class remains the same regardless of handler, but all junior handler in sanctioned class will receive an award regardless of dog s placement. Entry fees are the same. Awards Dogs will be judged in their specific group as determined by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). For the mix breeds, the owner chooses the most representative group depending on their dog s attributes. A judge may reassign your dog if the choice of breed is considered truly unfitting. A judge can also help you in choosing the best suited group for your mixed breeds dog if you are unsure. Top 3 dogs in every group and categories will be awarded placement rosettes. Puppies will all be in the same group for placements. Dogs that qualify will receive a Q ribbon for each Qualifying run. INSTINCT TITLE: The Barn or Brush Hunt Instinct Title will be granted to novice dogs who qualify in one of their first two runs ever in each discipline. Puppies can earn the Instinct Title early, but NQd runs as a puppy will not count as first novice runs. A dog that titles as a puppy does not need to re-title in novice, but will retain bragging rights of earning an Instinct Title as a pup! Dogs earning the Instinct Title will receive a rosette mentioning if earned as a puppy or adult dog. There will be special prizes and champion/reserve awards. ALL JUNIOR HANDLERS (younger than 18) will receive a participation rosette, but the dog will be judged in its registered class. RAT CARE AND SAFETY: RATS! Canada is committed to the humane treatment of rats used at all Rats! Canada events. Rats are rotated out hourly or as applicable based on weather conditions and other factors. Rats are chosen and trained specifically for the sport. Tubes used are built for dog AND rat safety according to specific rat care rules. Rats will not be harmed in any way during or at the end of the trial; they are returning home to be as cared and loved as dogs can be. Please report to RATS! Canada any concerns or unacceptable treatment you witness in any rat sport event so we can follow through.

Notice to Competitors Competitors, through submission of entry, acknowledge that they are knowledgeable of RATS! CANADA rules and regulations including but not limited to the following rules regarding entry: This trial is open to all dogs being at least 3 months of age (instinct and brush hunting) and 4 months of age (instinct and barn hunting), including purebred and non-purebred, except dogs with injuries or illnesses which may cause the dog pain or great discomfort, or dogs exhibiting signs of aggression that threaten the safety of other dogs or humans. RATS! Canada is working hard toward a system to accept bitches in season. However, BIS will not be eligible to compete at the K9 Sport Fest events. Full refund will be granted even after closing date with a veterinary certificate. Physically challenged dogs are allowed and encouraged to compete. The Dogs must not show evidence of being in pain or discomfort. The judge shall excuse any dog that shows evidence of pain or discomfort. Nature calls (for the dog) in the ring are NOT disqualifying matter but the clock keeps running! Physically challenged handlers are allowed. Physically challenged owner/handlers shall provide the judge with a written description of how they intend to work with their dog. The modification must be approximate to the best of the handler s ability. The judge must approve and initial the modifications and attach the written description to the score sheet. All dogs must be registered with RATS! CANADA to compete. It is your responsibility to obtain a RATS! CANADA Dog ID number, prior to the trial. If you do not have a RATS! CANADA number you may submit your request with this trial premium. Your card and number will be given to you at the trial. Safety shall always be of foremost consideration at all times. Handlers, through entry at this event, accept full responsibility for themselves and the actions of their dogs. The organizing committee may refuse any entry for any reason. In addition, THERE SHALL BE NO REFUND for entries withdrawn after the closing date or in the event a dog and/or handler are dismissed from competition, regardless of reason for such dismissal. The trial will run rain or shine, and there are no refunds for weather related cancellations All dogs shall be presented at ringside in a flat buckle or snap collar, plain harness, or properly fitted martingale (limited slip) collar. NO choke collars, prong collars, or shock collars are allowed at ringside. A properly fitted martingale collar should be barely larger than the circumference of the dog's neck when fully tightened. Puppies may compete on a long line, however the handler is not allowed to guide the search using the leash. Adult dogs at all levels compete without a leash and collar. Upon successful completion of an exercise, the owner may choose to briefly pet or touch the dog as a reward but no treats or accessories can be used. Dogs must remain under control at all times whether on or off leash while on show grounds, including when a rat tube is found. Careless, excessive biting, pawing or shaking will lead to disqualification. Please pick up after your dog and yourself. Have fun!
