KCTC MEMBERSHIP MEETING 5-15-09 - SUMMARY FUN MATCH - We decided not to have a fun match at Village Green. Instead, we will have Obedience and Rally run thrus (same day) on selected weekends, and Agility run-thrus on others. Dates will be picked so as to avoid conflicts with local trials. The goal is one per month. COMMUNITY DAY SEPTEMBER 12 - Howard Hanna wants to sponsor us, perhaps doing some doggie contests. We will accept. BUILDING ISSUES - We will purchase a gate for the back door, similar to the one on the front door. We will also make a sign for the front door, requesting visitors to leave their dogs behind. permission to use photos on the web site. Pete finally stated that there is information about a July dogs-in-motion seminar on the Sheltie website. COMEDY NIGHT - June 27 is the tentative date for Comedy Night, with the 26 th as a back up. COMMUNITY RELATIONS - Caroline stated that six demos are planned. One will be taped by BPTV, and one will be the subject of an article in the Post- Gazette. NEW EQUIPMENT Potential suggestions new equipment included a dog walk, a storage trailer, and a KCTC sign for use at tables and booths, and funding for instructors to attend seminars. These ideas will be considered if and when we can afford them. CLASSES - For the next session, Basic II will replace Basic I on Wednesdays at 7:30. Sally stated that we need more assistants for Basic I. Pete agreed with Sally, noting that Obedience is the basis for all other classes (Rally, Agility, etc.). Pete also noted the need to expand set-up time for certain classes like Rally and Agility. WEBSITE - Pete stated that the volume of e-mails suggestions for the website has decreased, and that Dan and Lucy would be the website editors. He also said he planned to put a calendar on the website. Two suggestions he received, although good in theory are not feasible, based on his experience as Webmaster for the Sheltie club: (1) on-line payment for classes, and (2) a members-only section. He also requested high-quality digital photos of members dogs, and suggested that we put a statement on the membership renewal form to grant 2

BRAGS 4 Dawson at the Sheltie Nationals Peter & Yvette Grandillo are VERY proud to announce that...cammi and Dawson got to compete at the A.S.S.A. Nationals in Perry, Georgia on April 19th, 2009. Cammi double Q'd in both runs in Excellent B. Dawson also double Q'd in both runs in Excellent B taking 1st in Jww and 1st in Standard. We were very proud of the fur kids. Naturally, the kids got some ice cream from Dairy Queen and steak from Applebee's. Bryce, the pup, was very supportive of his brother and sister the entire trip. Bryce kept their seats warm in their crate, taste tested all their food (more than once), nipped Cammi and Dawson's paws to ensure their reflexes were good for the ring and provided all the warm-up play he could possibly do to get them ready for the ring. What more could you expect from a little brother! Peter & Yvette Grandillo are also pleased to announce that... Cammi and Dawson both qualified and got to compete at the A.K.C National Agility Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 27th through March 29th. While I would be delighted to say that Cammi and Dawson were finalists, that did not happen. At the Nationals, you need three clean runs to even have an outside chance of qualifying for the finals. Cammi and Dawson gave a valiant effort, but only qualified on two of the three runs. More importantly, just qualifying for Nationals in general was an honor. This is Cammi's fourth time qualifying and Dawson's third time qualifying for Nationals. Just being there was an experience that will never be forgotten. The intense competition, the speed in which the dogs run, the amount of people in attendance, the pomp and circumstance surrounding the trial is like no other trial. Regardless of the intensity and drama of the event, Cammi and Dawson always seem to remind me that playing with a tennis ball and curling-up on the couch is just as important to them as anything else. It's the little things... Pete & Yvette Grandillo JR are very proud to announce that Cammi and Dawson competed in the Golden Triangle Obedience Training Club agility trial over Memorial Day weekend. Cammi earned five Qs out of 6, and Dawson earned three double-qs, including one 2 nd place finish in Standard and one 4 th place finish in Jumpers both in Excellent B. Cammi, Dawson, and Bryce were a little perplexed with the crate arrangement at the trial. Their three crates were lined-up as usual, but there were two more crates, one for Molly and one for Maggie. What were Maggie and Molly doing at the trial, they thought? Cammi, Dawson, and Bryce know Molly and Maggie when they visit Grandma s house, but they never knew Molly and Maggie to have a crate at an agility trial. Molly said, move over Cammi & Dawson, here I come

Grandillo, Sr. and Molly Pete Scouts Camp. While at camp, Sadie earned all five Agility Badges and a Hiking Badge. For the Hiking Badge, she needed to hike 6 miles with me off-leash and perform an off-leash leave-it with wildlife. (No easy task for a terrier!) Congratulations! Pete & Peggy Grandillo SR are very proud to announce that Suntera Molly Ann Grandillo (call name Molly) competed in her first agility trial on Saturday and Sunday over Memorial Day weekend at the Golden Triangle Obedience Training Club agility trial. Pete Sr. guided Molly to a 1 st in Novice Jumpers and 2 nd in Novice Standard. It was a great family affair. The entire family was there to support Pete Sr., grandkids and all. Maggie, Molly s fur ball sister, also loves going to the trial. Maggie sits in mom s lap, doesn t have to run, but gets all the treats and new toys to play with. From Barbara Newman: Sterling led me to achieve a NOVICE A RALLY title and followed it up with second place and her first leg in her Rally ADVANCED A title at the most recent show in New Castle. She has indicated that I am improving and there is reason to believe I will achieve. From Lori Miller: In May, Howie and Sadie participated in the Paws for Life Relay held in South Park. That event allowed them both to complete their Community Service Badge requirements for Dog Scouts of America. They have a combined total of $2,561.00 in fundraising dollars and over 80 hours of community service for the last two years. The Comedy Night Fund Raiser is set for Saturday, June 27, at the Royal Place Lounge, 2 nd floor, 8 10 p.m. Tickets are still $10. To make life easy, members can print out a copy of the ticket located at the end of this article. Put your name on the ticket and how many tickets you want. Put the ticket and your check in an envelope and drop in the money slot at Keystone, located in the office next to the white cabinet. We will have the actual tickets at the club and will replace the copies with original tickets. We need to keep a tally of how many tickets are sold. I have a total of 80 tickets which makes for a full house. Everyone who attended last year had a good time and this year s event should be just as entertaining. all new Comedians If you have any more questions you can contact Toni Yurkovic at 412-882-6855 Toni For Memorial Day Weekend, Sadie and I traveled to St. Helen, Michigan for Dog 5

Frozen Dog Treats (Frosty Paws) 1 32 oz tub plain yogurt 2 tbsp peanut butter 1 ripe banana 2 tbsp honey Blend ingredients and pour into a greased muffin tin. Put the muffin tin into the freezer and freeze until solid. Frozen treats should pop right out. If not, use a knife around the edge to pop them out of the muffin tin. They can be wrapped in wax paper, placed in a plastic bag, and put back into the freezer. DOG PHOTOS If you would like to see your dog on our website, please send a high-quality digital photo to Pete Grandillo (rmcgrad@hotmail.com). Of course, Pete reserves the right to select the ones that are appropriate (i.e., in focus, no red-eye, etc.). CLASS FEES Just a reminder -- Effective July 1, the cost for members to take 7-week classes that were formerly $20 will be increased to $25. SERVES 12 PET THERAPY REQUEST The activities director, Beth Knoll from The Bradley Center called Keystone asking for an individual who would be willing to do Pet Therapy at the center on a twice a month basis. This would continue through the summer. The Bradley Center is a non-profit behavioral healthcare provider for children, adolescents, and their families located in the north and south hills of Pittsburgh. 35 Devassie Road Pittsburgh, PA, 15205. WEB SITE www.thebradleycenter.org Phone # 412-788-8219 SENIOR DOGS.For those of us who have older dogs. Continue exercising at a slow pace no more jogging! It s important that they get out doors and see other people and other dogs. A slow, short walk at the park is a good way to get them out even if you just walk to a bench and sit and watch the passers by. Mental stimulation is also just as important. Have them do some basic obedience exercises. Give them the leave it command, then have them retrieve the toy or food. Have them do some fetch games. Most importantly love them more than ever. Patting, stroking, talking (even to my totally deaf Cocker Spaniel) is very reassuring to them. They still want to be a part of your life. 6

The Dues Renewal Season is Here Again! The Board has decided that dues will remain the same for the upcoming year - $70. As in the past, instructors and assistants will pay $35. If you plan to renew your membership for another year, your dues must be paid by July 1, 2009. New this year, we are requesting a copy of your dog(s) vaccinations. This should be sent along with your check and renewal form. Please be sure that you send a copy, as no forms will be returned. If you were voted into membership since August 2008, please do NOT send a check yet. Your dues will be prorated and you will be contacted individually so you will know the proper amount to pay. New members will need to send vaccination information also. Please send your check, renewal form, and vaccination information to Marian Roznowski, 1849 Fallowfield Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15216 for processing. The Board has also decided that for anyone who does not pay their dues by July 1, 2009, they will remain on the newsletter and email lists for 2 additional months. After September 1, their name will be removed from both lists. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Keystone Canine Club Membership Renewal Form July 2009 June 2010 Name(s) Address: Home Phone: Cell Phone: Email Address: How would you like to help out at the Club?
