RBC Canine Hero of the Month Meet Ranch at Brushy Creek resident pet - Pokey Duron! Pokey is a senior dachshund, originally found paralyzed from dragging himself around the streets in early October of 2011. He was picked up by Animal Control and taken to the Austin animal shelter. Georganne and Bob Duron got a call from their friend Patty with Austin Pets Alive late that evening, telling Georganne about Pokey and how he was going to be euthanized the next morning if they could not find a foster home that could accommodate his special needs. Most foster homes were full at the moment, because this was also during the same time as the massive Bastrop fire tragedies. Georganne and Bob had just lost their beloved 3-legged senior rescue dachshund Mokie to cancer a few days before, but without a second thought, they went to pick up Pokey the next morning and never looked back. They fostered him for a year, taking him to Physical Therapy and Hydrotherapy 3-4 times a week for many months, hoping he might be able to learn to walk again. Pokey never regained use of his back legs, but with the help of a donated doggie wheelchair, this spunky little fellow was adopted officially by the Duron family a year later - and his adventures were only starting! Over 4 years later, Pokey is now approximately 14 years old and, while slowing down a bit, he is still entertaining and inspiring adults and children alike! Pokey has been seen on television and various websites as he has competed in the Dogtoberfest Weenie Dog Races every year for the last four years, as the only dog racing in a doggie wheelchair. He always comes in last but he is definitely a crowd favorite! Pokey has also spoken to Girl Scout troops and to over 100 kindergarteners about the joys of fostering and adopting senior and special needs pets. Pokey has his own t-shirts and tote bags created with his image for use at rescue events, which say "Pokey Says - No Matter What Life Throws At You...Just Keep on Rollin'!" Pokey is a funny little dog with a huge spirit and he lets nothing stop him for doing almost everything any other dog can do - whether it's playing at the dog park, visiting the sick or stopping in at Tomlinson's to pick out his own toys and treats. - Photo by Erica Woodford Photography 6 The Ranch at Brushy Creek HOA Newsletter - March 2016 Copyright 2016 Peel, Inc.

ZIKA VIRUS Zika virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and there is no specific treatment or vaccine currently available. The best way to avoid getting the virus is to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitoes. About 20% of people with Zika virus actually get ill. Severe disease, requiring hospitalization, is uncommon and death due to the virus is rare. The incubation period of Zika virus is thought to be a few days to a week, but is still unknown. Symptoms include fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, and headache. Symptoms tend to be mild and last from 2-7 days. Zika virus can be contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito, through blood transfusions, through sexual contact, and from mother to child during pregnancy. The mosquitoes that are able to transmit Zika virus are also able to transmit dengue and Chikungunya viruses. These mosquitoes are daytime biters, but can also bite at night. Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water- buckets, tires, tree holes, animal water dishes, etc. To protect yourself from mosquito bites, wear light-colored clothing that covers as much skin as possible, use insect repellent (read and follow label instructions), use screening on doors and Mention this ad and receive a $250 credit toward comprehensive or invisalign treatment Blair R.
