Humane Society of Broward County CRITTER CRIER VOLUNTEER NEWSLETTER: OCTOBER 2016 Letters from Lacey The fall season is upon us! Although we rarely get to experience a change of season here in South Florida, we still hope for cooler nights and pumpkin spice everything!! It might just be me, but I believe there is something about this time of year that inspires people to start baking. So why not combine our love of pumpkin and baking to make some delicious treats for our furry family members. Many of you may already know that pumpkin is wonderful for your dog s digestive system. But did you know that ginger helps ease upset stomachs and is a natural antiinflammatory, while cinnamon boosts energy, circulation, and overall brain health? You can find a fido friendly recipe, containing all of these healthy ingredients, on the back of this month s Critter Crier. These treats are sure to please your doggie and make him feel included during the holiday festivities. The HSBC is proud to partner with a local foundation Dolly s Dream, who is underwriting the adoption fee and cost of supplies for select bully breed dogs that are currently available for adoption. To date, 14 dogs have benefited from this partnership. Pictured here are sisters Roxi and Whitney (7 years young) who were adopted and happy to be going home with their new dad. Walking through our adoption kennels, you will notice that the selected dogs will have a story on their kennel stating that they are a Dolly s Dream Dog in case any patrons ask. J.R. Dunn sponsors the adoption fee for one animal a month, and promotes the selected pet on a radio spot, their website and social media pages. The Diamond in the Ruff campaign will run through October 2016. The featured pet can also be found each week on the HSBC website and Facebook page. The Adoption Ambassador Program has helped 77 animals find their forever homes this year (Jan- Aug 2016).

Paws on the Green Calling All Ladies! It s Tee Time!! The 18th annual Ladies Invitational PAWS on the Green Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 8th at Grande Oaks Golf Club. We are looking for some female volunteers who are interested in spending a day or two out on the beautiful golf course while helping us with some of the contest holes. It is not necessary to know anything about golf to join the fun. Volunteers can select to work on Monday, November 7th from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and/or Tuesday, November 8th from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. To sign up or for more information, please contact Jamie at 954-266-6827. Paw Path If you would like to honor or memorialize a friend, pet, family member, or loved one, purchasing a brick to be placed in the Humane Society of Broward County s Paw Pathway is a meaningful gift that will last forever. With just a few special words, a loved one who has passed away can be fondly remembered, and their life will be recognized by the many visitors to the Pathway. And for that special celebratory occasion a birth, retirement, wedding, birthday, Mother s or Father s Day or just because a brick dedicated to that someone special will honor them as well as support the animals in our care. If you would like to recognize someone in this unique and special way, more information can be found on the HSBC website at www.humanebroward.com. Just click on the Donate tab at the top of the page and look for Paw Pathway. Contact Sandy Ross in the development department at 954.266.6869 or sross@hsbroward.com.

Clear the Shelter July 23 rd was a fantastic day for shelter animals across the country and in Puerto Rico. It was the second annual Clear the Shelters event. Through this partnership between NBC Universal Owned Television Stations and hundreds of animal shelters, thousands of pets found loving new homes that day. Seven shelters participated in South Florida. Here at the HSBC, we teamed up with local partners NBC 6 South Florida/WTVJ and Telemundo 51 Miami/WSCV. All adoption fees were waived for the event at our shelter and 121 animals found new homes. The PETCO Foundation provided goodie bags for our adopters, Metro PCS visited the shelter and gave away items to those who stopped by, and Sal s Pizzeria rewarded our hardworking staff and volunteers with delicious pizza the following day (which was still very busy because animals adopted on Saturday had to be spayed or neutered before heading home). Big thanks to all the volunteers who helped out during this huge event! Your dedication is greatly appreciated. Pit Stop What has a wiggly butt, a smiling face, and a bad reputation? Pitbull s! The Pit Stop s mission is to get together with local businesses to host events that will educate our community on a very misunderstood breed and to promote a better bully image. For our kickoff event it was a no brainer that we wanted to host it at one of our favorite dog friendly breweries, Funky Buddha. On September 3 rd, we brought out 4 huge gift baskets to raffle, and 4 amazing pit bulls to be adopted. The event was a complete success! There was a huge turnout of people along with their dogs to support the Humane Society and the program. With the help of our amazing volunteers, we were able to raise over $1,000 in donations for our animals here at the shelter. While none of our dogs were adopted at the event, we had many people tell us that they never knew how amazing and sweet pit bulls actually are. But don t worry; within a week after the event all four of our pits were adopted. The HSBC is extremely excited for the future of the Pit Stop program, and hopefully through education we can change the pit bull image one person at a time. The Pit Stop will be back at Funky Buddha for Barktoberfest, October 30th, from 10am-4pm.

Glad to be back at HSBC! Linda Sanders has returned to the HSBC as the main contact for Walk for the Animals. Linda began her involvement with our shelter as a volunteer in 2004. In 2011, she joined the Education Team as staff, then became the Adoption Ambassador Coordinator. After a 2 1/2 year move to North Carolina, Linda was anxious to return. Sometimes you really don t understand just how special a place is until you re gone. I missed the staff, the wonderful volunteers and the positive environment, she says. She s glad to be back and is ready for the challenge of overseeing the Walk, but warns everyone to beware! She s going to recruit you! She is determined to make the Walk a success and hopes to have everyone involved. Please stop by the Walk office on the 2nd floor to say hello. Linda always welcomes a friendly face. If you would like to get involved with the Walk or need help starting your Pack, contact Linda at 954-266-6817 or email lsanders@hsbroward.com. Get ready! Registration opens September 1st!
