Harvest Bend Harvest Bend The Village Volume 7, Issue 1 January 2010 www.harvestbendthevillage.webs.com Houston Dog Park Association Submitted by Tiffany Moore Go Green Go Paperless Sign up to receive Harvest Bend The Village in your inbox. Visit PEELinc.com for details. The Houston Dog Park Association is seeking candidates for the Treasurer position on our 5 seat Board of Directors. We are a small 501c3 NFP consisting of volunteers who are passionate about dog parks and responsible dog ownership. HDPA has been incorporated for over 10 years and was the main catalyst that got dog parks started in Houston, beginning with Millie Bush Park in 2002. We have been inactive the last few years and are currently reviving the organization to advocate for dog parks more actively. We each spend a few hours a week working to educate about dog parks, responsible dog ownership, advocating for dog parks that need improvement, and promoting the need for more dog parks. We have a book keeper volunteer that is a CPA. The ideal candidate would be able to attend one monthly meeting of the Board at 7 pm on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. You will also attend the quarterly Membership meetings held at 3 pm on the third Sunday of the month that begins each quarter. The next one is in January. We also hold about one event per month on average to raise funds and awareness and we ask our Board to try to attend these events as their time permits. Please submit your resume and experience for consideration. Please include a paragraph telling us why you would be a good candidate. We are seeking an experienced NFP Treasurer to plan and manage the small yearly budget for HDPA and oversee the book keeper as well as maintaining and advising on HDPA s tax and nonprofit status and filings. Someone with training or knowledge of NFP budget and issues or direct NFP experience is preferred. Copyright 2010 Peel, Inc. Newsletter - January 2010

SUMMARY OF December 7, 2009 BOARD MEETING Submitted by Ella Darby, HBTV HOA The meeting was called order at 7:02 p.m. Board members in attendance were Robbie Adams, Susan Norris, Stella Coupe, Ella Darby not in attendance was Lucretia Allen. Also in attendance were Leigh Pollard and Albert Quintero with Sterling Association Services, Inc. and Sergeant Redd (Harris County Constable Precinct #4). Sergeant Reed was unable to present the statistics for the November, at the meeting because their system had been currently down. Sergeant Reed stated that crime was very minimal and Deputy Sharon King was assigned to patrol Harvest Bend replacing Deputy Ewing. A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously to approve the October 5, 2009 minutes of the meeting of the Board of Directors as written. The November 30, 2009 financial statements were reviewed by the Board. It was reported that repairs to the baby pool have already started by Southwest Pool. A replacement of some pool furniture will need to be done since some pieces are beyond repair. Also replacement of the sand filters will be needed. Repairs to the pool lights are being worked out, a malfunction with the electrical wiring is causing the breakers to trip. The Board will later address the need to revise pool hours to offset expenses. Two lights are reported out in the park area and will need to be replaced. On Landscape plants for the median entrances have been damaged due to the recent cold front, those plants will need to cut back. Lighting options for the Monument Signs at the entrance were discussed, a draft was requested to determine the position of the lights, so that it would not affect the view of the arch in the sign. The Architectural Control report was submitted for review. The following Officers were elected; President Robbie Adams, Vice President - Susan Norris, Secretary Lucretia Allen, Treasurer Ella Darby and Director at Large Stella Coupe. The Board moved into Executive Session. The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m. The monthly meetings are held on the 1st Monday of each month. Health Briefs Baylor College of Medicine Don t lose sleep over nighttime bed wetting Giving children control over bed wetting helps them overcome not only the nighttime nuisance but also the stigma of it, say doctors at Baylor College of Medicine. Because studies have yet to identify the cause of nighttime bed wetting, no one treatment is guaranteed to work for everyone. Nevertheless, the course of action with which the child is most comfortable tends to produce the best outcome, said Dr. Edmond T. Gonzales, Jr., professor of urology at BCM. With parents support, giving children an active role in treatment builds confidence. Some of the treatment options include prescription medications. One commonly used medicine makes the body react as if dehydrated so the kidneys retain liquids overnight. Another treatment involves an alarm system worn in pajamas that sounds when it becomes wet. More commonly, doctors suggest parents limit the amount of liquids children drink in the evening and schedule a bathroom break before bed. Gonzales said family doctors can help rule out any major health problems that could be contributing to bed wetting before discussing the many options. Cell phone usage may send wrong message If you roll your eyes when people are chatting away on their cell phones in a public place, you re not alone. According to an expert at Baylor College of Medicine, public cell phone use may show disrespect and impede social interaction. Depending on the situation, cell phone use can be problematic, said Dr. Catherine Barber, assistant professor in the Menninger department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at BCM. Talking on your cell phone at social events conveys that other people s time is not as important as yours. Loud cell phone talk can intrude on others privacy and need for quiet, and it can even make people feel uncomfortable. Romero suggests talking quitely if you must use the phone, or excusing yourself to take a call and making it brief. She suggests not accepting non-urgent calls. It s important to be mindful and respectful of others around you, said Romero. If someone around you is disturbing you with their cell phone conversation, Romero suggests gently approaching them and asking them to reduce their volume. It s important to convey that you are not angry. If they refuse, remove yourself from the situation. Spark Power Bank Electricity Rates Are At Near Record Lows!
