mostly... SCOTTIES by Martha Melekav 26332 Belle Port Ave. Harbor City, California Have received many interesting comments on the reference to "Scottie Cramp" in this column. Some of them, I feel, should be transmitted to the readers, and I wish to thank each and every correspondent. Jean Craft, in her excellent newsletter of the Heart of America Scottish Terrier Club, "Diehard Doin's," mentions that she scanned old dog magazines and came up with this, specific source not stated: "Tetany; irregular, possibly recessive gene. Found mainly in Scottish Terriers, but occasionally in other breeds. More commonly known as "Scottish Cramp," a condition in which stiffness and rigidity occurs when dog is excited or exercised. Was probably introduced through one strain and possibly by one particular sire. It was considered b y 1959 to be lessening in incidence." Tetany, is defined in the dictionary as "a disease characterized by irregularly intermittent muscular spasms, especially in the extremities, usually accompanied by fever." Jean also states, and I heartily concur, that "Breeders should discuss breeders problems. Subjects such as "Scottie Cramp" and "Swimmers' should be discussed more freely instead of hiding them away like skeletons in a closet." F. J. (Bob) Bartos, of Carnation Farms Kennels, in answer to my inquiry writes, re "Scottie Cramp," Charves ROBERT and MILDRED CHARVES 2077 Willow Pass Road Pittsburg, Calif. Phone: 458-1110 CH. the subject from the different breeders. However, the last few years it has apparently not been a problem. No one, to my knowledge, has ever been able to come up with a comprehensive answer. There are apparently different forms of it and each animal or group respond a s they do through different phases. Bitches having displayed it have b een bred with none of their offspring in several generations again showing it. Others have reproduced it in their immediate offspring. It is a bit difficult to prove it hereditary, or just a combination of many other factors, plus the chances of coincidence." "It may show up by the third or fourth month, then again may not develop until much later in life- the 5th to 6th year. The ones people are most aware of are the puppies that develop the problem. There is a possibility that a new experimental drug may be of help in these cases. As yet I know of no one who has ANSTAMM'S TOP-NOTCH STUD FORCE used it as a specific. We have not had a case to try it on, but I feel there is a possibility it may be bene ficial to the point of correcting the problem. The drug is being used in horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, and dogs. In horses it has proven very beneficial in the control of muscle tie-up (Azorturia).'' "As I said, the drug is still experimental, and in talking with our Veterinary Dept., they suggested if needed your veterinarian w rite Henry C. Burns of H. C. Burns Co., as to availability of the drug C-SE (Selen ium Tocopheryl) as an application must be made for its use. I think it is worth a try." It is indeed encouraging to know that research continues for diagnosis and treatment of this condition, and let's hope that this new drug may be the answer. ress. Now, he is over a year old, and other than being a nervous dog, seems normal. She further states that when the dog dies, he will be posted to try to determine a cause. She also deplores the d estroying of afflicted pups, and states that she has heard of w hole litters being put to sleep when the symptoms appear. Through her and other breeders' conscientious efforts to find the answer, eventually the breed will be rid of this scourge. Among other mail, it was heartwarming to receive contributions to the Alaska Quake Disaster Fund, which were forwarded with the specific request that the monies be used for the Fullers' Scotties. Many thanks to a ll who contributed. TOP PRODUCERS OF 1964 We again feature those sires and dams that produced two or more champions recorded in the AKC's Pure Bred Dogs (January-December 1964).
