mostly... SCOTTIES by Martha Melekov Belle Port Ave. Harbor City, Ca lifornia It seems that the "new" Scottie Club, aptly named the Heart of America Scottish Terrier Club, is making headway. A recent letter from Mrs. Dean (Carol) Humphrey, tells us that they along with Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Craft and Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Boyles, are working hard towards reaching this goal and their progress is nothing short of amazing. Plans are already being laid for a spring Puppy Match, and many "guest speakers" for forthcoming meetings have already been arranged. Those in the "Heart of America" area who are in~ terested should contact the C rafts, Brymstone Kennels, R.R., Box 9-X, Parkville, Mo. Those of you in the Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska area should want to give this venture your strongest support. We hope to hear much from this area in the near future. A most pleasant and enthusiastic letter from Dorothy Morris (Scots Delight) of Maryland tells us of her activities, past and recent. The owners of Ch. Gaidoune Gidgit, who presented them with a September litter, are making plans for showing three of these in the fall. Several years ago, they obtained a lovely bitch puppy, MacKinnon's Jewel Reward, and showed her to w ithin one point of her title only to lose her in September. However, she had first presented them with a litter by Ch. The Laird of Scots Guard, from which two puppies have enjoyed a great deal of success. The male, Scots Delight Royal Savage, gained three majors before nine months, and has since finished for the title. A sister, now Ch. Scots Delight Radiant Jewel, finished from the American-Bred classes with three majors and several BOS awards over Specials. Another male recently gained WD at the Annapolis K. C. He is owned by the Roy Kirks of Glenburnie, Md. To quote Dorothy: "We are very proud of this litter and only wish we had their mother back. However, Cissy, as we called her, is at Nancy Lenfesty's now to be bred, as is our Gidgit, so we hope to carry on with Cissy's youngsters." The recent Cal-Ore Circuit. covering four shows over the Labor Day weekend, was a smashing success, at least for Scots, as the circuit brought out not just majors each day, but five-pointers at two shows! Beginning on Friday, Aug. th, at Redding, Calif., Mrs. Holland judged a three-point entry, and awarded Best of Breed to the Stamm's Ch. Bardene Boy Blue, handled as usual by Lena Kardos. "Simon," as he is affectionately known, went through the entire circuit capturing this award, and scored further honors the last three days. WD at Redding went to Zelwyn's Sandy Lyee (Ch. with the famous German Shorthaired Pointer, Ch. Gretchenhof Moonshine, who scored a second B est in Show of the circuit. Winners Dog on this day to "Sandy Lyee" again, this five points enough to complete his championship, I believe, and in just six or seven showings with L ena, too! Reserve went to "MacPherson." Winners Bitch and BW to a youngster, not yet a year old, Charves Maggie Lauder (Ch. Gilkey's Johnny Come Lately - Ch. Balachan Gambit) who recently acquired her Canadian title and is owned by Mildred and Robert Charves. She was also BOS to "Simon." "Maxine" scored another Reserve in Bitches. Moving south again to the Eugene, Ore., show, Mr. Korbel had a four-point entry, again awarding the Breed to Ch. Bardene Boy Blue, who scored his third consecutive Group First for the circuit... quite a weekend for " Simon!" WD on this day to Dr. and Mrs. T. Allen Kirk Jr.'s Balachan Grenville, a litter brother to "Sandy Lyee," indicating this must have been quite a litter, as h e is also very n ear the title. Reserve in Dogs to "J ason.'' Winners Bitch, BW and BOS for her second major, again to "Maggie L auder," w ith Reserve going to the Dunhams' Competitressa O'Cantie (Ch. Crescent H ill Leonid-Anstamm's Cantie Choice). All told, six different Scots received majors on the four-day circuit, and we saw two new champions finish... quite an eventful long weekend for sever a happy Scottie folk! Feel I must take a moment to kind of "editorialize" concerning this monthly space, as many letters have come in over the past months which have contained worthy suggestions as to how best to make this space most interesting and worthwhile for all our readers, both Charves ROBERT and MILDRED CHARVES 7 N. Rancho Road El Sobrante, Calif. Phone: -8 those in Scots, as well as other Terrier fanciers, who, I have discovered, also read our column as well as those of their own breeds. One idea the editor and I have b een "tossing around" in our correspondence may satisfy one basic problem... that of keeping our space as "national" in scope as possible. We would like to su ggest, for one thing, that each area Club, as well as the National Club, elect or select a correspondent to provide us with monthly news items that are directly r elated to their own Club activities, and/ or items that they feel would be of "editorial" significance, along with ideas on all the necessary things con- (Continu ed on page ) Carnation CH.
