Hist. nat. c.c;riyore Antipas Vol. XXXVl pp. 15-21 1996 PAGUROLANGIS, A NEW GENUS OF APSEUDOMORPHA (CRUSTACEA, TANAIDACEA) MODEST GUTU On prcsenre I;I diagnose tlu nouveau genre Pagurolangis. qui a ttt crct par la division de Ptrgr~rr~~~.sc~rrtlc.s Whiteleppe. Whitelegge describes in 1901 the genus Pagurapseudes, proceeding from the Australian marine waters, based on a species having a very peculiar mode of life which was much alike with that one of the pagurian decapods. For this reason the name given to the new genus was created by the association of the words pagur (which suggests the notion of decapod keeping its body in the shells of dead gasteropods) and Apseudes, a genus of tanaidaceans having some common specific features with the new species. the most evident one being on the level of antennule. which has two flagelli. Much later. in 1918. Bouvier describes another species of npseeudomorph tanaidaccans. this time from the Caribbean Sea (South- Eastern Coast of Cuba), which was combining the same great characteristics as the genus Whitelegge found. But as Bouvier did probably not know the existence of the genus Pagurapseudes, he was putting the species he discovered in a new genus, named by him Pagurotanais, thus associating. as Whitelegge also did. the same lexical form, pagur, but with Tanais. a genus of tanaidaceans which was not related with his described specics. as it might seem. This fact was remarked by Lang (1949, p. 4-9, \vho mentions:..another genus which has the same mode of life is Pngurotanais (Bouvier, 1918). which does not belong to Tanaidae as Rouvier considers. but to Apseudidae". In the same context he is asking himself:.,is the genus Pagurotanais identical with the Pagurapseudes?" Latcr the specialists which described other species resembling the two rncntioned ones (Menzies. 1953: Gutu and Gomez, 1975; Bicescu, 1976 a,

I h MODEST GUTU 1976 b. 1981; McSweeny, 1982; Gutu, 1992) included them all in the genus Pagurapseudes Whitelegge, 1901, considering without discussion also the species Bouvier described (Pagurotanais bouryi) as belonging to the same genus. Pagurapseudes. Thus, the number of species which are now included in the genus Pagurapseudes raised at eleven, to which two more, very resembling, are added by Bkescu (1976 b), who created for them the genus Macrolabrum, but Gutu (1981) united this genera in the subfamily Pagurapseudinae Lang, 1970. Analysing with attention the morphology of the species included in the genus Pagurapseudes. I found that four of them - P. bouryi (Bouvier, 1918). P. guitarti Gutu and Gomez, 1975, P. largoensis McSweeny, 1982 and P. laevis Menzies. 1953 - have the exopodite of pereopod I1 reduced to a single very small segment (Fig. 1 A), or absent. The other seven species - P. abrucei Bgcescu. 1981. P.dactylifrons Bgcescu, 1976, P. dentatus (Brown, 1956). P. pangtiruthuli Gutu, 1992, P. spinipes Whitelegge, 1901, P. tricoliae Bgcescu. 1976 and P. varians BGcescu, 1976 - have the exopodite of pereopd I1 three-segmented, very great (quite as long as the basis), with a very broaded last article and with many long plumose setae, suggesting that they have a rol in the ventilation (Fig. 1 B). In the same time. at the group of four above-mentioned species the exopodite of the cheliped is present, more or less normal (Fig. 1 C). but to the other seven ones it is reduced (Fig. 1 D) and very much modified (cf. McSweeny, 1982, p. 466) or absent (?). Following the geographical repartition of all the species of Paprapseudes one may also remark that those which have the exopodite of the pereopod I1 very reduced and a normal exopodite on the cheliped, arc proceeding from the South-Western Coast of North America (P. laevis Menzies. 1953) and the Caribbean Sea (the other three species from the group of four). but the other seven species, which have the exopodite of the pereopod I1 three-segmented. very much developed and that one from the cheliped very much modified or absent (?) have an Indo-West-Pacific repartition (Fig. 2). As a result. I consider that inside the genus Pagurapseudes there are..hiddenl' two groups of close related species, but which are well..delimitedu from a morphological and zoogeographical point of wiev, and I ihere'tore propose a new genus for the species which have a reduced cxopodite on the pereopod 11. that is the species from the South-Western zone of North America and Central America. the Indo-West -Pacific species continuing to belong to the genus Pagurapseudes. In this situation it would be normal to,.rehabilitatea the genus Papurotanais described by Bouvier (1918) from the Caribbean Sea. But in the name Bouvier created therc is the term Tanais and that could produce a serious confusion. because the genus with the same name (Tanais Dana, 1849) belongs to another suborder (Tanaidomorpha) and is completely different to the proposed genus and to Pa~urapseudes. the last two ones being closely related and belonging to the

PAGUROLANGIS. A NEW GENUS OF APSEUDOMORPHA (CRUSTACEA.TANAIDACEA) 17 Fis. I - Pereopods 11 of Papuro1anipi.s largoensis (A) and of Pagurapseudes pangtiruthuli (B) and cheliped of Papurolangis lagoensis (C) and Pagorapseudes spinipes (D): e. exopodite. (A. C and D after McSweeny. 1982).

1 X MODEST GUTU same subfamily. Therefore I unified the species of American pagurapseudinae under a new name replacing the one given by Bouvier, and I established a diagnosis which does eliminate the possibility of confusions. Pagurolangis n.g. Type-species: Pagurotanais bouryi Bouvier, 1918 Diagnosis. Body more or less cylindrical, without spiniform lateral prolongation: pleon with five pleonites and pleotelson. Ocular lobes well defined.with visual elements. Antennule with two short flagella. Antenna without squama. Palpus of the mandible present, three-segmented. Maxillule with bi-segmented palpus. Cheliped with relatively normal exopodite. Pereopod I1 uniform. like a rod or a stick. with very long propodus and dactylus: basis is not broader than the following segments; exopodite absent or present. one-segmented and very small, in the last case. Pereopods 111-VII shorter but thicker than the second one, with specialized structure. of sucker-type. on merus, carpus and propodus. Pleopods present (reduced in number ar?d size) or absent. Uropods short, usually with exopodite. Gender: masculine. Etymology: I named this genus in the memory of the famous tanaidologist Karl Lang (in combination with the greek pagurus ),he being the first which observed inadvertence between the name of genus given by Bouvier and the genus Tanais. Distribution: On the South-Western Coast of North America and the Caribbean Sea. Remarks. As one may see in this diagnosis 1 mentioned the absence or the presence of the exopodite of the pereopod 11. having in view that as well as Bouvier (op. cit.) Gutu and Gomez (op. cit.) describing the species P. houryi and P. guitarti are precising that this exopodite is absent. But also in this case I do think that they belong. without any discussion, to the genus Pag urolangis. At the species belonging to the Indo-West-Pacific genus Pagurapseudes there are some more differences. not only to the exopodites of the cheliped and the pereopod 11: can remark a greater breadth of the basis of pereopod I1 compared to that of the merus, the carpus or the propodus (Fig. 1 B). but at the american species the basis of pereopod I1 is approximately of the same breadth as the other segments (merus, carpus and propodus). as in the figure 1 A. Something more. as I already show. the two genera match very well with the geographical rcpartition of the species they contain (Fig. 2).

TANAIDACEA) 19 Fig. 2 - Map of the distribution of the species of genera P;l_eurapseudes (marked with squares) and Pngurolnnpis (marked with triangles). If Menzies's rcm%rks (op. cit.) are correct. I should add that between the Californian species (P. laevis) and the other ones, from the Caribbean Sea (P. bouryi. P. guitarti and P. largoensis) one must remark also a little difference, consisting in the number of segments (one or three) which form the exopodite of the cheliped. fact which could suggest the existence, inside the genus Pagurolangis. of two subgenera: one distributed in the Caribbean Sea. the other on the South-Western Coast of the North 'American continent. This. naturally. if the future described species from this zone would confirm the remark of Menzies (op. cit.). Key to the species of the genus Pagurolangis n.g. 1 - Uropods without exopodite...... P. largoensis (McSweeny, 1982) Ry the description of the genus Pagurolangis, the number of genera of the subfamily Pagurapseudinae Lang, 1970 is rising at three, of which Pagurapseudes Whitelegge. 1901 and Macrolabrum BBcescu, 1976 have an Indo-West-Pacific repartition, and Pagurolangis is restricted (since now) to the Central American zone.
