D G 410D Newsletter AUGUST 2018 "For them. For each other." Dear Fellow Lions, Another month has flown by and a lot of Service has been happening in the District. I am not surprised. The Clubs in 410D has always shown that they are extremely committed and passionate about serving their communities. I have had a lot of questions about New Districting next year. Our representative on the committee that deals with this, PCC Mike Newlands, has given a comprehensive reportback at the Cabinet meeting. I want to assure each and every Lion in this District that everything possible is being done to make the transition as smooth as possible. All discussions are taking place in a very positive manner, with uninterrupted Service being everybody s first priority. I am convinced that New Districting will usher in an exciting era for all of us. Thank you also to 1 st Vice DG Pieter, 2 nd Vice DG Leslie and PDG Herman for their contributions in this regard. Our Membership District Chair PDG Zwaai has proposed an incentive to boost membership in the District. His idea has been approved by Cabinet and you will all receive details shortly after 1 September. I am very excited about this initiative and can t wait to see what the reaction from Clubs will be. That s enough for me. Look after your communities and each other and remember: Think you can or think you can t, either way you ll be right! Best wishes, Freddie Erasmus DG 410D Right: DG Freddie at his 1st Cabinet meeting

Uitenhage lioness club - we serve Mother s Gift and Lions Honour Madiba The Mother s Gift service organization in KwaNobuhle, recently hosted a hundred underprivileged children in celebration of Nelson Mandela s centennial birthday. The children were treated to cakes and sweets as well as toys donated by the Uitenhage Lioness Branch Club. Members of the Club attended the ceremony and handed out the gifts to children aged between 3 and 10. Mother s Gift is a service organization situated in KwaNobuhle. It provides a daily feeding scheme to the underprivileged from the surrounding community, especially children. They have even managed to obtain a weekly Clinic service to be conducted from their premises. This makes Clinic visits much more accessible to the residents adjacent. It is a well known fact that Madiba was a fervent patron for children s well-being, said Mother s Gift Founder Sheila Isaacs. At Mother s Gift we share that sentiment and therefore feel ourselves to be very close to Madiba s legacy. Lioness President Sue Geldenhuis said that it was an honour to make a small difference in the lives of the children, like Madiba would have wanted us to. The occasion was rendered that much more special by the presence of a 99 year old resident of Kwa- Nobuhle, Velile Mdiniso. He told stories of life in Uitenhage in the early days and was also given the important task of cutting the birthday cake for the children. Uitenhage Lionesses making a difference to those in need Vistarus Mission Station was founded in 1998 and at present is home to approximately 400 people including 80 children. The Mission takes in the homeless off the streets and helps them with the restoration and putting dignity back in their lives. The Lionesses went to Vistarus along with their team from Salon Scissor Sisters. They provided 20 residents with haircuts, handed out sweet packets and cool drinks to the child that was really appreciated by those who are so desperately in need to regain their dignity back in their lives.

King williamstown lions - we serve Last year it was Barefoot Bowls where shoes were collected for the needy, this year it was Roll A Can where cans of food were requested to feed the hungry the King William s Town Lions Club tries to make fundraising for its service projects fun for all. A social bowls day was held on Women s Day, Thursday 9 th August at the King William s Town Bowling Club, who have always been most supportive of the Lions and the community as a whole in allowing the use of their fine facilities for these events. Fourteen teams of three players each played three games, each against one of the other teams, enjoyed sandwiches and pizza at the tea break, added to the funds with a game of Spider and the purchasing of curry and rice and boerewors rolls at lunchtime, and ended the day with each team receiving a prize kindly sponsored by many of the community-minded businesses in town. The winning team was that of Trellidor, comprising Nici Naude, Floris Brand and Alfred Buys, each of whom walked off with a large hamper courtesy of Nicks Daily Spar. Funds were further boosted by a raffle and an auction of two beautiful handmade blankets which the winners, in a show of their tremendous goodwill and kindness, donated back to the Lions to be auctioned off again at a future event. The funds raised and the more than sixty cans of food received will be used to alleviate, in a small way, hunger in our community, complementing the food collected at the recent Mandela Day Food Drive held in conjunction with Pick n Pay. A big thank you goes to our sponsors, the teams who participated and the spectators, the KWT Bowling Club and our Lions and Lions Ladies for making this a great and successful event, Lion President PJ Mauer remarked. We are already planning our next fundraiser and look forward to the support of our community again. All that we do is totally voluntary and is an attempt to serve the needy in King William s Town.
