WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 1 of 3) mammal A mammal is a warm-blooded animal that has hair or fur. A mammal has a backbone, and so does a bird, fish, reptile, and amphibian. A reptile or amphibian, unlike a mammal, is cold-blooded. den A den is the home of a wild animal. Some bears hibernate in a den for six months or more. Many animals have their babies in a den, or lair. rodent A rodent is a member of a large group of mammals that gnaw and have front teeth that keep growing. A beaver is a rodent, but a rabbit is not. A rodent generally eats plants, especially seeds.

WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 2 of 3) warning A warning is a hint, sign, or caution that might cause a person to change his or her actions. Pain is a warning that the body might be sick or injured. We saw a sign along the hiking trail with a warning to watch out for bears and mountain lions. enemy An enemy is someone who hates or hurts another living thing. An enemy is a foe or rival, not a friend. A lion can be called an enemy of a zebra because it tries to kill the zebra. burrow A burrow provides an animal with safety and protection from predators and harsh weather. A burrow is a hole or tunnel dug in the ground by an animal for use as a home. Animals that live in a burrow include meerkats, prairie dogs, rabbits, snakes, and naked mole rats.

WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 3 of 3) rabies Rabies is a deadly disease that skunks, bats, raccoons, foxes, and coyotes all can carry. Cold-blooded animals, such as amphibians, reptiles, and fish, cannot carry rabies, and neither can birds. If you are bitten by an animal that is capable of carrying rabies, you must seek medical treatment right away. relative Every person who is connected to you by blood or marriage is a relative. A parent, sibling, aunt, uncle, grandparent, and cousin are each an example of a relative, or relation. A polar bear is a relative of a grizzly bear. musk Musk is a liquid with a strong smell that some mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects produce to mark their territory. Musk from one type of deer was once used in perfumes, but now an artificial substance is used instead. Skunk musk has a strong, terrible smell.
