Spotlight A Club Member Club member LuAnn Stuver Rogers wrote Dog Tales, a popular dog column in the Kent-Ravenna Record-Courier newspaper, for nearly nine years before retiring the column in 2009. She has now turned the best of columns into a recently released book, aptly titled Dog Tales: The Book. The book received endorsements from two famous names in the animal/canine world; David Frei, longtime host of the Westminster Dog Show and the National Dog Show (which airs each Thanksgiving), and Jack Hannah, director-emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and host of TV s Into the Wild. From David Frei - In my world of show dogs and performance events, I see dogs being taught constantly to sit, stand, stay, respond and move. I have come to know that what we teach our dogs is not nearly as important as what we learn from them. LuAnn s columns give you that perspective. It s a wonderful collection written in the tone of someone who has obviously learned her life lessons well from her dogs. I hope you will enjoy her work as much as I have. From Jack Hanna Dog Tales: The Book features amazing stories about our best friends (not human ones) our dogs! In the years since retiring the column, LuAnn has continued in her doggy lifestyle. Her furry family has changed somewhat, but the five current Cavalier King Charles Spaniels still include Quest and Buck. I always enjoyed writing the columns for the R-C, she said. In fact I still make mental notes of things that my dogs do that I consider column-worthy. LuAnn, a Ravenna resident, currently edits The Royal Dispatch the magazine of the American King Charles Spaniel Club, the AKC parent club of the breed. The magazine was named the best club magazine in the country in 2013 by the Dog Writers Association of America. She has also won multiple Maxwell Awards (named for Ravenna s Maxwell Riddle) from the organization for her writing. At the recent ACKCSC National in Norman, Oklahoma, the parent cub presented her with the AKC s Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. The medallion honors those individuals who deserve special recognition and have made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs, embody the AKC Code of Sportsmanship, and have been an active and valued member of an AKC member club. She continues to volunteer with her Cavaliers, Quest, Delta and Gage with the Love on a Leash program at University Hospital, Portage Medical Center. Dog Tales: The Book is available at www.amazon.com for $14.99. Canines are very important parts of our lives, from our loveable sidekicks and companions, to therapy dogs and to extremely athletic dogs. Among all of the world s animals, dogs are really diverse, talented and compassionate. By reading Dog Tales you ll enjoy LuAnn s immersion in the dog world and be astonished at her canine buddies! A HUGE Thank You to Helen White for offering her great house and lovely location for our Club Picnic! The weather was great and the food was great and everyone had a great time! THANK YOU! Canine Cancer Awareness We have quite a few bracelets left over from the March Agility Trial when we had our Canine Cancer Awareness weekend. If you are able to take some and sell them, we can still make a BIGGER donation to the AKC Canine Health Foundation earmarked for cancer research. They are black silicone with hot pink paws on them and are not hard to sell! We are selling them for $2 a piece and ALL profits go to AKCCHF. There are a few bracelets at the club on the desk outside the office with a money box. Sandy will also have them at upcoming agility trials. If everyone sold 5 bracelets in the club, we could make a BIG additional donation! Take them to work or give as gifts! Please help support this worthy cause. Please contact Sandy Irish and she will make arrangements to get you the amount you need. sirish637@embarqmail.com August 2016 Youngstown All Breed Training Club 7
