Presidents Report Greeting from the UK, I hope everyone enjoyed the Club Open Show on February 23 rd 2014. Many thanks to Trish Fernleigh for completing my role as Show Secretary/Manager as I departed for our UK trip on the 21 st February. We had a small entry of exhibitors of which I thank but please note that continued support of these club events is needed to keep the club financial. Our Dog Big Day Out competition was a very successful day due to member participation and our group photo also appeared in the last Vic Dog magazine. We are very keen to have more events for our pet owners. The Restricted Height Agility Trial is a new event for our club and is being held on March 25 th, 2014. Sue Smith and her band of helpers are running this day please come down and support and cheer for our clever little friends. Online entries are the way of the future! We trialed this system for our Open Show and will be using the full services of Jeremy and his team at Showmanager.com.au for our June Champ Show. I encourage all our members to trial this very easy entry system. I look forward to catching up with you at out April General Meeting. Joy McInnes, President

Secretary Report I hope you all had a wonderful festive season, The December comp at Dogs Day out was a great success. Lots of fun was had by all. While we didn t win the competition for the most dogs of one breed in the ring at one time, it was a magnificent effort with 46 cavaliers along with their handlers in the ring at one time. This photo, along with many more can be seen elsewhere in this newsletter. Results are also elsewhere in this Newsletter. We were visited my lots of members of the public who enjoyed chatting with us about our lovely dogs. Many even purchased some cavalier items making us a tidy profit. Thanks to those members who assisted us on the day, especially Joy McInnes who acted as Steward on the day and manned the Cavalier Shop. The By-Laws Sub Committee, convened by Jan Kelly assisted by myself and Lyn Costello, have completed work on the new By-laws to bring them into line with the Constitution. This is published in the newsletter and will be ratified at the next Special General Meeting which will be held at KCC Park on the 10 th April at 7.30pm. Be there and have your say about the By-Laws. The Puppy Referral service will also be discussed at this meeting. In recent times this has had very little patronage by members. Committee is recommending some changes to this - another reason to be at the meeting to have your say. The Open Show was held on Sunday 23 rd February (results can be found elsewhere in this newsletter). The weather was perfect and everybody seemed to be having a great day. Congratulations to all of the winners. Many thanks to the great band of helpers: Karen and Bruce Hollingworth, Lyn Costello, Michelle Creek, Linda Hocking and Sue Reavley. A super contribution that ensured the day ran smoothly. To Steward, Lindsay Bolden, a big thank-you.

Secretary Report Saturday 15 th March will see our first Restricted To Height Agility Trial. Many thanks to Committee Member, Sue Smith for taking on the responsibility for organizing this event and her band of helpers for their support. The event commences at 8.00am. It would be wonderful to see members there to support this event Planning is well under way for the June Show. We will be calling for volunteers to form a sub-committee to assist us over the two days of the show with setting up, catering and packing up at the end of the weekend. If you think you can spare us some time, please contact me. Sadly another of our Life Members, Ron Betteridge passed away in November last year. Ron along with his late wife Viv played a big part in our rescue service for many years. RIP Ron. Looking forward to seeing you at an event some time soon. Trish Fernleigh, Secretary CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW JUNE 2014 It s that time of the year again. We re calling for donations for trophies and sashes We are asking $20 for a Trophy and $10 for a sash. Rescue Story on Lucy by Lyn Costello I had the pleasure of being involved with "Lucy" a rescue Cavalier from a puppy farm. This was a first for me and it gave me the opportunity to see how committed the Club is with its rescue service. Rehousing rescue Cavaliers often involves multiple club members and this was the case with Lucy to make sure that she found a lovely home. The club had been advised by a member that Lucy was with a lady who had collected her from a puppy farm, had thought of having a litter from her but then was talked into passing her on to the Cavalier club so that she could be placed in a permanent family home. Jan Kelly got the "call" and picked Lucy up together with a black and tan male and drove them out to our Rescue Officer, Greg Brown's house north of Melbourne. Lucy stayed at Greg's for several weeks while he organised her health check, desexing and microchipping. I knew of an elderly lady who had had given two of my older girls lovely homes over the years and she was now lonely after dear Emmaline passed away. I let Greg know and he contacted Lee, then took Lucy down to Cheltenham to try her new home. Although it seemed a good match, unfortunately Lucy did not settle in and Lee found it difficult to manage her. After more than a week to see if things would improve, I went down to pick Lucy up and see if she would settle at my house with my Cavalier, Genevieve as her company. Lucy took to Genevieve instantly and started to settle, although she was still very wary. She would follow what Genevieve did and started to trust me because Genevieve showed trust. Lucy would not come when called or encouraged, but she did follow Genevieve to me and then as I patted Gen, Lucy would allow me to pat her as well. Even with a slow, gentle pat she would cower as my hand came towards her and would flinch at first touch... then she would relax as she realised it was ok. I laughed the first time she rolled over on her back to be patted on the tummy...real progress. And I was delighted to see her first flat out run after Genevieve chasing a bird in our back yard. She was becoming a real dog again. Lucy was not a nervous or frightened dog. But she didn t like sudden movements and seemed wary of what other people may do around her. It was as if she had led a life with little human interaction or with no real affection. She was not afraid of other dogs and was more wary than afraid of humans. She just didn t expect affection but seemed to wait to be brushed past, picked up or moved from one place or another.

Her behaviour suggested that the best home for her would be with another Cavalier or dog(s) so that she could be secure with the animals and then learn to become secure with the humans. She had another visit to the vet to have her teeth cleaned and several teeth removed. After this, and with the progress she had made with Genevieve and me, she seemed ready to go to her new home. companionship. Both Greg and Jan had spoken to Alice from Phillip Island who was looking for a Cavalier and who had two other rescue dogs in the family. When I rang her, it sounded like an ideal home for Lucy. Because of the long distance, we met at a friend s house in Frankston, and Alice brought one of her dogs, Izzy, to introduce to Lucy to see how she would cope. It looked like a perfect match so Lucy was soon on her way to her new home. It was sad to see her go because she had fitted in so well at home and Genevieve had enjoyed the I have since received several text messages from Alice and they are very heart warming... "Lucy is really doing well, following me everywhere. She had her dinner. Coping really well with both dogs, a bit puzzled and slightly frightened of the cats. The children are giving her space so she seems to be quite interested in them as long as I'm there and they don't get too close" "Lucy is sitting next to me watching the tennis. Also Lucy has decided that my eight-year-old daughter's bed is quite nice and that my daughter might be okay to." "Just a quick update. Lucy is doing really well. She came out for lunch yesterday and coped really well. She also went for a walk with us yesterday and she really enjoyed it. She's eating well and toileting well. Very happy with the two dogs but still wary of the cats but getting braver. Sleeps with me on the bed and sits on my knee in the evening or any time I sit down. Winning hearts wherever she goes" Plumb-tuckered out after the Beach All continues to go really well. Lucy is enjoying life very much I think. She's is getting braver about people, loves her walks, is passionate about the beach and even paddles out a little way. She adores my other 2 dogs, particularly Dolly, and runs after them along the beach and is even considering the occasional romp. She officially sleeps on our bed at night and has her preferred arm chair in the lounge room. I'll keep you posted.

The Cavalier club is always happy to see a rescue dog find a new family home. Often a rescue involves 3 or 4 Club members to collect, house, get health checks and find the new family, often involving a lot of travel. This is all done voluntarily. The Cavalier club pays for the health checks, microchipping, desexing, and any other necessary vet work such as teeth cleaning. Although the Club receives a small payment from the new owners for the rescue dog, this does not always cover the dog s health costs. We rely on donations to keep the rescue fund healthy for helping Cavaliers just like Lucy.

Complimentary Membership All puppy buyers are entitled to one year s complimentary membership when they buy a puppy from a Club member. Please print off the complementary membership form from the members section of the Website and give it to your puppy buyers. Jan Kelly Membership Secretary Older Dog Sales The Committee has become aware through the expression of interest form that many people are interested in purchasing an older dog. Much discussion was generated and a decision was made that a puppy is until 6 months. An older dog is 6 months to 5 years. Any dog over 5 years is considered a recue even though it is not a recue as such. The Club rescue officer Greg Browne has many people on his list who are very willing to take on an older Cavalier even one requiring medication. Breeders consider contacting the Club to place your ex breeding dogs or any dogs that you have tried in the ring and have not worked out. Jan Kelly Puppy Referrals
