The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Connecticut www.ctmayflower.org October 2016 Volume 36, Number 3 GOVERNOR S MESSAGE My stated emphasis for CT Mayflower is education. With an enlightened public, our society will prosper and grow. It is with great pleasure that I thank an anonymous donor for increasing the Scholarship Fund by $25,000. I want to extend my sincerest thank you for this donation which can help us establish renewable scholarships for our recipients. Also, thank you to those members who have included nearly $800 in donations with their annual dues contribution. The Education Committee is developing a display for our October 29th meeting that features Edward Winslow as our designated Pilgrim. This is in conjunction with our speaker, Dr. Walt Powell, who will tell us more about Winslow and the Winslow House which is our General Society Headquarters in Plymouth. There is a very interesting story about this Winslow family that everyone will enjoy. Loomis Chaffee School has granted permission to move onto their campus with the ground penetrating radar. The results are not to be shared until the LC Board meets and determines what will be released. I will keep on top of this. Please remember our Pennies for Planks request. One check has been received and I am confident that we will reach our goal of $400 for 400 years towards Mayflower II restoration. My sister and I recently visited the Mayflower II in Plymouth and it is quite evident that repairs are at a midpoint. The interpreters did a magnificent job of telling the story in spite of the obvious patches on the ship. I am challenging all of the other Mayflower Governors to hold a similar fund raiser in their states to assist with the repairs. If you would like to send a check instead, make it out to CT Mayflower Society and note that it is for Mayflower II. Send this to David Grant, 2 Sybil Creek Pl, Branford, CT 06405. We have a page on our website where donors are listed. Think a penny for a plank. Restoration of the Brewster plot at Brewster Neck Cemetery continues. Thank you for your donations. If you are in the area, please visit and see the work that is being accomplished. It is located just north of the intersection of routes 12 and 2A in Preston, CT. The fact that an article appears in Nutmeg Gratings does not in any way reflect that Gratings, its staff, or the CT. 2020 Logo Depicts the Voyage of the Mayflower With the 400 th anniversary of the voyage of the Mayflower occurring in the year 2020, we have a unique opportunity to educate current generations about the trip our ancestors undertook in 1620. As part of the 2020 celebration, the Connecticut Society of Mayflower Descendants has approved the following logo to help educate the public on the voyage of the Mayflower. We have created a selection of moderately priced quality items that display the logo, which make excellent Christmas gifts. The products are available on our website CTMayflower.org. The proceeds from each purchase help our scholarship fund The logo utilizes the 0 s in 2020 to show parts of the globe; England, where the Mayflower s voyage originated, and New England, where the voyage concluded. The logo is geographically correct and shows the ship traveling east to west, from England to New England. New Item Available This 2020 license plate frame will be available for sale on our on-line store at http://www.ctmayflower.org/store.php The price is $15. New members welcomed at April meeting. Thanks to Dwight Hulbert for the photo. 4

Leave a Legacy Connecticut Mayflower offers you an opportunity to enhance the scholarship program which has assisted many students over the years. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds, through the sale of 2020 materials and your generous donations, to assure that each of the scholarships can be renewable. An additional year or more of assistance with college costs would mean a lot to a young person. Please consider remembering the Connecticut Society of Mayflower Descendants Scholarship Fund in your will. Be remembered along with Mrs. Henry G. Isham, Bernice A. Livingston Reig, and Jordan Konov as supporters of education and scholarship. If you choose to remain anonymous, you will still have the satisfaction of knowing you have made a difference. For information on how to create this legacy, please contact David Grant at sybilcreek@yahoo.com. No gift is too small. Thank you. Dear Friends, Please help the Connecticut Mayflower Scholarship Fund grow by using this coupon to memorialize or honor someone. When your contribution is received, an appropriate card will be sent to the designated person acknowledging your gift. No mention is made of the amount only the fact that a contribution has been received. All checks are to be made out to CSMD Scholarship Fund. All donations will be placed in that fund. Please consider using this coupon for the next funeral or occasion to honor a friend, relative or yourself. This is a forever gift as only the interest on the scholarship endowment fund may be used, so the fund will grow in perpetuity. A MEMORIAL A TRIBUTE To commemorate or celebrate a life event. A Canadian Mayflower Society Legacy: The Remarkable Story of Edward Winslow, Jr. of Plymouth, MA and New Brunswick Dr. Walter Powell to Speak at October Meeting The Mayflower Society House in Plymouth, MA, purchased by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants in December 1941, is a beloved local landmark and an important resource for our members around the world. While known historically as the Edward Winslow House, few know the details of the Winslow family who lived there or the tumultuous events up to and during the American Revolution that forced them to give up their home and become refugees. In an illustrated lecture, Dr. Powell will explore this family and the extraordinary career of Edward Winslow, Jr. Dr. Walter Powell is Executive Director of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. Prior to coming to Plymouth in July 2013, he served as the former Director of Planning and Historic Preservation for the Borough of Gettysburg, PA, and as an Adjunct Instructor in History at Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, PA, and and Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. He holds an M.A. in History and a Ph.D. in English from Kent State University. He resides in North Plymouth with his wife Susan and has two children, Nathaniel and Sarah Ellen, both now living and working in New York City. Scholarships Available! Even though it is only fall as you read this, the holidays will be here and gone before you know it and if you have a high school senior, or know of one, now is the time to start thinking about scholarships. Two important facts to consider, the application must be received by March 1, 2018 to be eligible and our junior affiliate members get special consideration. We award three scholarships annually of $ 1,620 each. All three scholarships adhere to the same guidelines and deadlines. Any graduating high school senior who is a resident in Connecticut is eligible for these scholarships. One need NOT be a member of the Connecticut Mayflower Society. However, in awarding the Isham and Reig scholarships, special consideration will be given to applicants who are either a member or junior affiliate member of the Connecticut Mayflower Society or who is a child or grandchild of one of our members. These applicants need not be Connecticut residents. Academic achievement, extra-curricular involvement, and community service are considered in the review of each application. The completed application and all required documentation must be received by March 1 st each year. Awards will be presented at the spring meeting of the Connecticut Society of Mayflower Descendants. Scholarship applications and instructions for The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Connecticut scholarship program and application for the Junior Affiliate program are available on our website: www.ctmayflower.org 6
