EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT March 2017 Monday 27 th Prime Stock Market EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD 01392 251261 livestock@kivells.com www.kivells.com

65 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS 10.45AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Prime Cattle to 201ppk & 1242 Barren Cows to 165ppk & 1331 Even without any of those really top notch sorts as seen of late Prime Cattle still saw a respectable high of 201ppk given for a Limousin steer (21m) being the best of an excellent run from RJ Macbean & Sons of Plymstock. Strong South Devon steers (22m) from Basil Cane of Plymouth saw 193ppk and 1242 with well finished Galloway steers (28m) from Brian Vallance of Bickington also seeing 193ppk ( 1074). Limousin heifers (21m) sold to 189ppk ( 980) for Rosie Fishleigh of Okehampton whilst further Limousin females (23m) rose to 188ppk ( 1110) for Keith & Christine Morish of Cheriton Bishop, their Charolais of a similar age also fetched 188ppk and realised 1162. Best OTM prime cattle got 181ppk for Andy Richards of Exminster. The blistering trade seen of late for Barren Cows was more than sustained with a top per kilo of 165 pence ( 1049) for a cracking Limousin from Adrian Wilton of Blackawton whilst highest price realised was an enormous 1331 (144ppk) for a tremendous Simmental cow from Charlie Gregory up from St Columb. A well presented lorry load of young grazing sorts from Andrew Lawrence of Mullion sold well and to 155ppk for Limousins as eleven averaged 147ppk and 775. Two well covered South Devons from Phillip & Dawn Cleave, Holne attracted plenty of interest as both attained 148ppk ( 1174 & 1129) also their Limousin cow (probably with some Galloway blood in her) looked dear at 140ppk ( 864). A hefty Angus cow from Andrew Johns of Newton Abbot hit 138ppk ( 943) followed by Peter Hooper, Bovey Tracey with his best halter broken Limousin to 135ppk. The uplift in demand for barreners once again helped the dairy men with Holstein types to 125ppk ( 926) for Friend & Reeve of Sandford with Jersey cows from the Davis family of Westleigh looking a good trade and topping at 100ppk ( 501). Vendors are kindly reminded to inform us of their entries for Monday s Prime Cattle and Barren Cow auction in advance to enable potential purchasers to be advised of likely numbers. Please contact the Market Office (01392 251261) or Robert Armstrong over the weekend by phone or text (07791484290) or by email robert.armstrong@kivells.com Thanks to our vendors for your continued support and a reminder to all that there is good competition for all classes of prime cattle and barren cows at Exeter Livestock Centre on a Monday. Also note, TB pre movement tests are NOT REQUIRED for this sale. 2347 SHEEP 9.30AM Auctioneers: Russell Steer 07788 318701 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 634 Lambs to 95.50 & 237ppk 854 Hoggs to 90 & 188ppk 844 Cull Ewes to 130 & Rams to 118.50 634 PRIME SPRING LAMBS Fewer forward, possibly caused by a few of the larger national abattoirs finally pulling their fingers out and starting to accept lambs. Any farmers enticed by their quotes of a bit more than hogg price will be keen to learn that a shortage of lambs here today, especially lighter weights, in front of eleven active buyers representing at least fifteen outlets (two of which were first time abattoirs from out of the area). The result was a very strong trade for all qualities on offer with the better bred lighter lambs working out to 450-485ppk deadweight, a fair way in front of any hogg price! Two pure Suffolk 49kg lambs from Ross Lawrence of Iddesleigh topped the day at 95.50 whilst other 47-52kg lambs sold to 89.50 for Ben & Charles Mortimer of Powderham, 88.80, 88.50, 87 & 86.50 for the May family of Netherexe who also sold 46kgs at 87.80 only bettered by John Hull of Tiverton who achieved 91.80. 45kgs to 91.20 for Robert & Edward Mortimer of Kennford and 89.50 for Michael & Tom Hartnell of Cornworthy who also had 44kgs at 90.20. Best of the 43kgs peaked at 91.20 again for John Hull, 89.50 again for the May family and 88.50 again for Robert & Edward Mortimer. 42kg lambs climbed to 91 again for Ben & Charles Mortimer as some great 41kg lambs old away well to 89.50 for Paul & Elsie Mills of Sampford Peverell, 89.20 for Dudley Banks of Fenny Bridges and 88.20 for Terry Scarrott of Kentisbeare while the best of the 40kgs maxed out at 88 (220ppk) for Derek White of Dalwood. 37-40kg lambs continue to meet the greatest demand! All buyers are after these weights, getting lambs heavier is expensive in itself, you run the risk of getting them too fat and you ve fewer buyers to bid at them! A dozen Sale commencing at 9.30am Weight No s Fwd 32-39 193 40-45 298 46-52 143 Top s Per P.P.K Head PRIME LAMB 91.50 (+2.00) 91.20 (-1.80) 95.50 (+6.50) Average s Per P.P.K Head cracking 39kg lambs from the Pengelly family of Cullompton raced away to 91.50 (235ppk) closely followed by two smart pens of Charollais sired 38kgs at 90 (a sale topping 237ppk) for both George & Daphne Howell of Bristol and Robert Thorn of Chagford. More 38kgs at 89.80 (236ppk) for Oliver Howell of Bristol, 87 (229ppk) for Arthur Salter of Broadclyst and 86.80 for Sophie Howell also of Bristol whilst a smart pen of first draw lambs from Ivor & Rene Alexander of Tiverton scaled 37kgs and sold at 85 (230ppk). SQQ was up 7 pence on the week to rest at 211ppk and also worth noting is that all 634 lambs averaged 85.84. 869 PRIME HOGGS Finally the lift is here! Following on from the rise all through last week, all hoggs sold to the dearest trade seen for many months with the best to 90 twice and 89.20 for shapely heavy sorts from Geoff Tucker of Halwell who also topped the market at 188ppk with 42kgs at 79 and his superb run of 45 hoggs averaged a pleasing 87.90. Further heavy & overweight hoggs to 89 & 85 (x2) for Mark Harvey of Slapton, 89 & 85 also for Paul & Elsie Mills of Sampford Peverell, 88 for Michael Cheriton of Whitestone, 87.20, 84.80 & 84 for Geoff Tripp of East Prawle and 85.80 for A Bennett of Moretonhampstead. Remainder of the overweights generally 80 to 85 to give an average of almost 83 for the weight range. 47-50kg hoggs sold to 87 & 83.80 for Ray & Sylvia Toms of Cheriton Bishop, 84 for David Heath of Sherford and 46kgs sold to 84.80 for Mick Branton of Dunsford and 81 again for David Heath who also had 45kgs rise to 80.50. Store buyers and an increased number of buyers on light hoggs to kill helped drive the light hogg trade which rose to 68 for 38kgs (179ppk) from Stuart Crang of Thorverton, hill bred hoggs of the same weight from Tom Friend of Lydford made 65 and lighter keeping hoggs from Michael Bowden of Tedburn St Mary achieved 180ppk. Two pens of 32kg Scotch and Beulah bred hoggs from Abel Bros sold well at 58.50 & 55 (183 & 172ppk). Sheep with teeth up sold to 74 and 151 (49kgs) for MJ Stevens of Exeter. 821 CULL EWES & 23 RAMS 33-39 85 40-45 224 46-52 350 53+ 178 SHEEP 6 EWES 821 RAMS 23 A large entry of just under 850 cull ewes and rams through the gates at Exeter with another improved trade with lesser and smaller sorts looking particularly dear. Steve Parish of Uffculme attained 126 with a pair of strong Charollais ewes whilst the May family of Netherexe hit 119 for a colossal Dorset with further pens at 99. A super show of ewes from David Rossiter of Galmpton saw the best of his Suffolks hit 108, whilst Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton also hit 104.50 for similar goods. Powerful Charollais crosses from Robin & Liam Dare of Upottery saw the best of theirs reach 102.50, Eric Dennis of North Tawton realised 102, Jeff Harvey 101.50, whilst Willie Hill of Stockleigh Pomeroy saw the best of his consignment reach 100.50. Mules this week still a fair trade topping at 80.50 for two pens and 80 for another from Mark & Henry Johnson of Bridport. As stated, smaller and lesser types forward were well competed for and were somewhat dearer on the week. Again a large portion of Dorset and Dorset crosses forward with the real powerhouses trading above the 90 mark. Fewer rams forward met another cracking trade topping at 118.50 for Michael Vooght of Hennock presenting two outstanding Charollais rams, followed by Robin & Liam Dare at 112, Graham Hill of Sidmouth hit 102.50 whilst Adrian & Julie Rich of Halwell made 98.50.
