Congratulations to Peter & Yvette Grandillo: Peter & Yvette Grandillo are very proud to announce that... Cammi and Dawson got to compete in the American Shetland Sheep dog National Agility Trial on April 15th, 2008 in Greeley, Colorado. Cammi finished 5th in Excellent B Jumpers and 5th in Excellent B Standard. In both runs, Cammi missed placing by.20 seconds. It was a heartbreaker for the handler, but a fun, clean runs for the little girl. As for Dawson, he finished 1st in Excellent B Jumpers and 1st in Excellent B Standard, both in 20 inch. We are really proud of the fur kids. Afterwards, Cammi & Dawson got to take a walk in a National Park called the Garden of the Gods. Then after that, Dawson decided he was going to bark at some elk in Estes Park. Finally, Cammi & Dawson got to scale the steps at Red Rock Amphitheater for a scenic view of the Rockies and downtown Denver. Everyone had a great time in Colorado, but everyone was happy to get back to the Burgh... (especially since this road trip included driving through a blizzard & forest fire in Colorado, a tornado in Missouri, and a 5.2 earthquake outside of St. Louis.) Cammi and Dawson were photographed on Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs, CO Congratulations to Patti Ennis: Pattie and her three dogs went to Missouri to a Larry Painter Herding Clinic. It was an enriching experience for both dogs and trainer. Although it rained a lot, Rein, Margo and Emerald did very well with the sheep and cows. Mira does not like herding so she stayed at home with a friend. Larry Painter is world famous for breeding, training and judging Kelpies and Cattle Dogs. His Kennels are called Kuawarri Kennels. Congratulations to Pam Lewis: Pam Lewis and Crystal got their first Excellent B agility leg and 1 speed point at the recent Cheswick trial. Only 749 more points to get a MACH! STEEL CITY WAGS From Ed Hanke Dogs are an absolute joy to have in your life if the dog is raised properly. The goal of Dog Scouts is to help every dog owner value their canine companion even more and deepen the bond they have with their dog. We help each dog owner become more responsible Dog Scouts do everything with positive reinforcement. Rewards- based training is used to teach your dog what every good canine companion knows; from basic manners to specialized training. "Let us learn new things that we may become more helpful" is the Dog Scout's Motto. The more a dog learns, the more welcome that dog becomes in more places. A recognition program is available for training and service. You and your dog can earn badges, which denote achievement in specialized skills once you have attained the Dog Scout badge. At present, the Steel City Troop is working toward qualifying our membership as Dog Scouts and working on Hiking and Backpacking badges. Trips to the Montour Trail and PNC Park for "Pup Night with the Pirates" are also in the works. If this sounds like fun and something you might like to try, we meet the first and third Saturdays of the month and would enjoy seeing you come out. For further information contact Ed Hanke (412-833-7237) To everyone that has ever loved a pet and eventually lost them! Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to put him to sleep right in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed quite calm, petting the old dog for the last time that I wondered if he really understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay here as long." Live simply, love generously, care deeply, and speak kindly. 5

PET SEARCH DONATIONS Thanks to everyone who donated items for Pet Search. They are going to a good cause! Pam Lewis SALLY J. TRESS OUR NEW TRAINING DIRECTOR I have been married to my husband, Rich, for 25 years. My son, Ben, is 16 and my daughter, Stephanie, is 14. I currently have 2 dogs: Cherry, a 5-year old Irish Setter, and T-Bone, a 1-year old Chihuahua. We also have Zachary, who is a 4-year old red-eared slider (turtle). I am employed full time as a medical secretary for a trauma and general surgeon. I sing in my church choir, and enjoy being a teacher s aide for firstgrade religion education classes. My dog obedience experience began with Gert Sullivan in 1978, with my first dog, Buffy, an Irish Setter. I subsequently joined Golden Triangle Obedience Training Club, where we earned an American and Canadian CD. I did a 5-year apprenticeship at Golden Triangle, which evolved into an instructor position. I joined Keystone Canine Training Club in 1992, with Gizmo, my first Chihuahua. Gizzy also earned a CD and enjoyed canine freestyle. I currently teach basic and, occasionally, novice obedience classes, and participate in obedience, rally, agility and freestyle. As a member of the Keystone K-9 ers, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to share my dogs with nursing home residents, students, and other members of the community. 6 ROBIN MOORE IS COMING TO KCTC! Robin Moore C.C.E.A, from the Healthy Pet and Wellness Center, is coming to KCTC every Saturday afternoon starting on July 12 at 12:30 pm. Robin is a certified animal physiotherapist and certified animal chiropractitioner. Several KCTC members have been taking their dogs to Robin for various ailments, and are very happy with the results. Even dogs with no apparent problems can benefit from Robin's evaluation and therapy. They cannot tell you if they are stiff or sore! Robin will first evaluate your dog to determine if and where they are having problems, what treatment or therapy would be best. She performs heat massages, hot and cold treatments, infrared for better circulation, ultrasound for better joint mobility, manual massages, and weight training on a doggie treadmill for endurance. She also does chiropractic adjustments, but needs an e-mail from a vet to allow her to do so. Her sessions are 1/2 hour long. The fee is $40 for non-members but $35 for KCTC members. You dog will be very grateful! Please contact Dan Goldberg (samoyed4@verizon.net) if you would like to schedule a time slot with Robin, and your preferred time.
