The author of this thesis was born on March 6, 1976 in Groningen, The Netherlands. After graduating from the Praedinius Gymnasium he started medical school at the University of Groningen. After graduation in 2001, he started working as medical doctor at the Department of Orthopedics (headed by Prof. dr. J.R. Van Horn) of the University Hospital Groningen. Later that year the work on this thesis started at the Department of Biomedical Engineering (headed by Prof. dr. ir. H.J. Busscher), which included a study performed abroad with the group of Prof. dr. W.G. Pitt and Prof. dr. B.L. Roedert at the Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, United States. During that time he also initiated the work on a Dutch problem-based textbook in orthopedics, called Probleemgeoriënteerd denken in de orthopedie. Een praktijkboek voor de opleiding en de kliniek, which was published in 2004. During the 2004 annual congress of the European Bone and Joint Infection Society in Milan, Italy, his presentation The influence of ultrasound on the release of gentamicin from antibiotic-loaded acrylic beads and bone cements was awarded with the EBJIS Innovation Award 2004. In July 2005 he started his 2-year residency (headed by dr. P.C. Baas and dr. G.I.J.M. Beerthuizen) at the Department of Surgery of the Martini Ziekenhuis Groningen prior to further specialization to orthopedic surgery.
