38 C.OKUMA The geus Tetragatha Latreille, 1804 has bee kow from 56 species i the Australasia regio (Roewer, 1942 ; Brigoli 1983). However, o detailed study of the geus has bee made i this vast geographical regio. Recetly I was able to study the Australasia tetragathid spiders based o the collectio of the several museums ad istitutios. As a result 31 species were recogized from Australia, New Guiea ad eighborig islads. Of these, 3 species are already kow as the cosmopolita species (Okuma, 1983). The preset paper gives the descriptios of 11 ew species ad the redescriptios of 17 kow species. Illustratios of importat characters as well as measuremets of the relative legths of legs of the 31 species are also preseted. The umber of materials examied, ad the abbreviatios of the museums ad the istitutios are as follows : BMH : Berice P. Bishop Museum, Hoolulu, 356 specimes. AMS : Australia Museum, Sydey, 181 specimes. NSMT : Natioal Sciece Museum, Tokyo, 17 specimes. KUF : Etomological Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu Uiversity, Fukuoka, 72 specimes. Termiology of the cheliceral armature of Tetragatha was established by Wiehle (1939). Later, Locket & Millidge (1953) adopted his termiology ad traslated it i Eglish i their book, British Spiders. I the preset paper, the terms are used accordig to Locket & Millidge. I additio, some ew terms are provided. These are summarized as follows (a asterisk shows a ew term) : a : A apophysis, used for lockig the female s fag durig copulatio. Gu : The guide tooth of upper row. *Gl : The guide tooth of lower row. *e : A extra tooth foud betwee (Gu) ad (T) i the female of some species. T : The first (largest) tooth of the row proper. *rsu : The upper row of small teeth. *rsl : The lower row of small teeth. *U2 : The ext tooth of (Gu). *L2 : The ext tooth of (Gl). *s : A spur or promiece, preset i the female of some species. t : A tooth or promiece, foud i the male of some species. sl : A tooth which usually slopes towards the base of the segmet i the male of some species. *AXu : A auxiliary guide tooth of upper row, preset i some species. *AX1 : A auxiliary guide tooth of lower row, preset i some species. EX : A excrescece foud o the outer edge of the fag, ear its base, i some species. Ackowledgemet I wish to express my hearty thaks to Dr. JoA Teorio of the B. P. Bishop Museum, Hoolulu, Dr. M. R. Gray of the Australia Museum, Sydey, Dr. H. Oo of the Natioal Sciece Museum, Tokyo ad Dr. Y. Nishikawa of the Ohtemo Gakui Uiversity, Osaka for the loa of may valuable specimes. My hearty thaks are due to Prof. Y. Hirashima of Kyushu Uiversity for his helpful suggestio ad ecouragemet throughout the course of this work. I am also grateful to Assoc. Prof. K. Morimoto ad Dr. 0.
