A young Angus steer (15m) from Ken Lane, Exminster drew 208ppk with over thirty month cattle fetching 205ppk for a well rounded Limousin heifer from Colin & Stephen Berry of Bow and 204ppk for a smart Blonde female from Derek Arnold, Morchard Road. Further Limousin heifers (22m) made 200ppk for Jeff Harvey of Hennock, also South Devon females got 199ppk for Basil Cane up from Plymouth. 3498 SHEEP 9.30AM Auctioneers: Russell Steer 07788 318701 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 Spring Lambs to 133 & 314ppk Hoggs to 135 & 248ppk Cull Ewes to 147 & Rams to 126 1087 PRIME SPRING LAMBS Almost 1100 spring lambs were by no means the quality or trade seen last week, as anticipated following a week of falling prime hogg trade. That said and putting last week s phenomenal trade to one side, the lambs sold to a Weight Top Average competitive crowd of buyers all after the better bred and finished lambs resulting in a trade ahead of a fortnight ago. Top price of 133 went to Steve & Sandra Prettejohn of Aylesbeare with their tremendous first pick of the year scaling 44kgs (302ppk) whilst their second pen weighed 41kgs and achieved 121.50 (296ppk). A single 53kg lamb realised 130 for May Priorton of East Village as heavy weights (47-50kgs) sold to 129 for Barry Mildon & family of Cadbury, 127 for Ross & Helen May of Netherexe, 126.50 for Blackdown Game of Cotleigh, 126.50 for Uprising Properties of Ashill and 126 for Russell & John Stevens of Holwell. 46kg lambs to 124 (270ppk) for Charles & Ben Mortimer of Powderham as 45kgs reached 125 (278ppk) for Chris Carr of Shillingford Abbot who also had 44kgs at 122, only bettered by those of Steve & Sandra Prettejohn s and David Pengelly of Cullompton making 123 (280ppk). 43kg lambs to 122.50 (285ppk) for Michael Down of Payhembury and 121.50 (283ppk) for Ivor & Rene Alexander of Tiverton. A single outstanding pen of inside fed 42kg lambs from Dr Shelley of Shobrooke topped the weights at 126 (300ppk) Best of 41kgs at 123 (300ppk) for Andrew Pedrick of Buckfastleigh with smart pure Charollais who also had a pen of super 38kgs at 119.50 or a sale topping 314ppk. More pens of 41kg lambs at 119 (290ppk) again for Michael Down and 118 (288ppk) for both Barry Mildon & family of Cadbury and Andrew & Shaun Carter of Sidmouth. 40kgs to 117 (293ppk) for Ian & Sue Tall of Modbury and 116 & 113 (290 & 283ppk) for David Pengelly. Amongst a larger entry of lighter lambs (some picked slightly prematurely on the trade) Amy Pedrick of Buckfastleigh sold 37kgs at 110 (297ppk). SQQ is back 36 pence at 264ppk but still 11 pence in front of a fortnight ago. Having said that the few better finished hoggs were still in keen demand, but a large percentage of store and under finished hoggs did little to help the flow of the sale or the overall average. Best overweights topped at 135 for N Widdicombe of Totnes, 130 for Melanie Forward of Talaton, 129 for Andy & Wendy Reed of Blackborough, 126.50 for Reg & Annie Pedrick of Ashburton, 125.50 for Geoff Tripp of East Prawle and 123.50 for R & J Gowing of Cadbury. 50kg hoggs sold to 115.80 for Phil Lockyer of Cheriton Bishop and 115 for both Bill Quick and family of Crediton and Amy Pedrick as Richard Mann of Widecombe achieved 114.50. The same figure was made by Mick Branton of Dunsford with his 48kg hoggs and 46kgs reached 114 again for N Widdicombe or a sale topping 248ppk. Amy Pedrick parted with a pair of fine 45kg hoggs that realised 110.50 (246ppk) and Sue Cleave of Christow sold 44kgs at 107 (243ppk). 42kg hoggs reached 99 (236ppk) for both KH Alsopp & Partners of Cadeleigh and Megan Dennis of Tedburn St Mary and 40kgs peaked at 94.50 (also 236ppk) for Julie Williams of Ilsington. Lighter weight hoggs comprised of mainly hill bred sorts that traded from 200 to 224ppk and a pen of nicely bred 38kg hoggs maxed out at 234ppk ( 89) for ME Vicary of Eggesford. SQQ affected by the number of underfinished hoggs presented and quite insignificant at 220ppk. Ewes topped at an impressive 147 for CJ & PJ Greenslade of Cullompton showing a trio of well covered Texels. Another tremendous run of Dorset ewes from Ross & Helen May & family of Netherexe saw the best top at 132, with others to 130.50, 129, 128 and 124. HC Derryman & Sons of Yarcombe attained 122 for powerful Suffolks, Bill Quick of Zeal Monachorum achieved 119, BG Hansford of Exeter realised 116, as did Peggy & Phil Keast of North Tawton. A cracking pen of Suffolk crosses from JT Venning & Son of Lanteglos Highway achieved 115, Charolais from Andrew Pedrick of Buckfastleigh hit 114, Melanie Forward of Talaton achieved just a little less at 113.50, whilst KH Alsopp & Partners of Cadeleigh achieved 112. A large entry of Mules saw the majority of larger framed, meated ewes trade between 80-90, whilst a large proportion of hill ewes traded between 50-60 with Scotties topping at 58 for E Hosegood of Zeal Monachorum. A good show of 77 rams saw the best top at 126 for Andrew Pedrick, Peter Cole of Crediton showed a powerful Charolais which attained 120, with David Rossiter of Galmpton hitting the same figure. WH & A Willcocks of Harford realised 108 whilst just a little less at 107 was attained by DH & H Mildon & Son of Cadbury. As stated, a superb entry of cull ewes and rams met a lesser trade on the week but still realising good figures with 1521 cull ewes averaging out at 81.88 and 77 cull rams averaging 87.14.
