Extinction Rate Just to illustrate the degree of biodiversity loss we're facing, let s take you through one scientific analysis... The rapid loss of species we are seeing today is estimated by experts to be between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate. These experts calculate that between 0.01 and 0.1% of all species will become extinct each year. If the low estimate of the number of species out there is true - i.e. that there are around 2 million different species on our planet - then that means between 200 and 2,000 extinctions occur every year. But if the upper estimate of species numbers is true - that there are 100 million different species co-existing with us on our planet - then between 10,000 and 100,000 species are becoming extinct each year.

Zoos SA Has one of the largest zoo offerings in Australia of interactive animal experiences 12 Brief Encounters 17 longer Behind the Scenes Demonstrations Greetures Zoo mobile Over 12,000 people participated last year Raises critical revenue ($800k) Great feedback

Member input What types of animal interactions activities do you agree with? What activities do you definitely disagree with? What activities are areas of grey for you?

Just some of the areas of grey. Koala holds Coin birds Animals on a leash Taking animals off site Humanising animals (birthday cakes ) Visitors feeding animals Hand-rearing for interactions

All animals to be treated with respect A positive experience for an animal Minimise the risk of ill-health or injury (to animals & humans) Activities in interaction to be linked with natural traits and behaviours of an animal An animal must be provided choice in participation in an interaction Animals to be appropriately conditioned to the particular nature of the interaction Animal visitor interactions to be supervised by appropriately trained and proficient staff members Any feeding during an interaction must be regulated with a focus on overall appropriate diet and health care Animal visitor interactions must take place in a setting and context which encourages respect for the animal

Wildlife Tourism = 9% global GDP = over a trillion USD = 1.1 billion tourists We have a responsibility to ensure these experiences are good for the animal.

Expedia & TripAdvisor announce new booking policy and education efforts Working in concert with globally renowned and respected zoo, anti-animal trafficking and animal protection groups, Expedia is determined to put animal welfare and standards of care for animals involved in these wildlife activities at the forefront of the travel planning discussion. "TripAdvisor's new booking policy and education effort is designed as a means to do our part in helping improve the health and safety standards of animals, especially in markets with limited regulatory protections," Stephen Kaufer, president and CEO of TripAdvisor said in a press release. "At the same time, we want to celebrate those destinations and attractions that are leaders in caring for animals and those in the tourism industry who help further the cause of animal welfare, conservation and the preservation of endangered species."
