NMAF June Newsletter LLOL Dog tent at LLOL event Levi and his new family The Long Leash on Life "To the Rescue" event was a smashing success. Between the huge sale, the match from LLOL, the store raffle and the rescue raffles, the total intake was $30,000!! This is to be split among the 12 rescues according to points awarded for participation by each group for pricing, staging, publicity, sales and their information/adoption tent. Multiple volunteers from NMAF helped on each step. The NMAF tent was full of dogs and volunteers. Next year (if we are asked back) we would like to have participants from the cat group and the NMAF/Street Cat Companions in our tent. Super kudos and thanks to LLOL and all their staff! And all of our volunteers who helped and for all the donations. Thanks to Lisa for bringing Biscuit and Honey, Victoria for bringing Walter, Tama for Norman, Gloria for Colby and Alan for Levi and Gaston. Levi and Gaston were adopted that Sunday! Thanks to Pat, Bart, Sally, Glenn and Karen for also helping with the dog tent. A total of 12 animals were placed including a cat each from Animal Welfare and the Humane Society. The money raised will go a long way for supplies and medical expenses.
DOG FOSTER PRESENTATION Tama gave an informative presentation on introducing fosters into their new (temporary) homes. Topics covered were housebreaking, helping the shy dog, creating safe places, handling and feeding. Many fosters showed up to share their concerns and stories. Food, drink and laughter and tears were shared by all. Stay tuned as Tama plans another presentation late summer on recognizing signals (calming and warning) in dogs. This will be beneficial even to cat lovers when they meet other people's dogs. THANKS TAMA!! NMAF NEWS As of May 31st, 10 cats and 44 dogs have been adopted in 2014!!! As of the 31st, no dogs were in boarding/day care although 3 had been in and out earlier in the year. As of May 31st the web site stated Amber, Sarah, Rikkita, Batman, Bellissima, Monte, Luigi and Melanie (cats) were needing fosters. Three cats are in boarding and would appreciate foster homes. Multiple spays and neuters, chips, and vaccinations have been done. Walter had to have teeth removed, allergies treated and had a bee sting. (A very generous donation of $300 was made for Walter!) Sachem had to have major (expensive) knee surgery (and is doing well at week 2). Ginger came back after 5 years and needed a dental cleaning and some extractions. Sachem's surgery
Cat Adoption and Fostering News Sweet, beautiful tri-color Mia who was placed as a kitten in 2008, who was returned to NMAF last year, has now found a wonderful home with her former Foster Dad, Gene! Congratulations, Mia! Our sweet black and white longhair Spot, age 13, now has been adopted by a super-duper family, his former foster Mom, Loretta. Spot is sharing his new home with a beautiful feline friend, Amelia! Although she has adopted Spot, Loretta is not saying good-bye to foster care just yet! She s now fostering a good buddy of Spot s, Bella (photo above), a pretty 6 year-old longhair brown tabby who also needs to find a good home. Her new roomie Amelia was not too thrilled with Bella s arrival (even Spot was a little confused!). According to the latest report in yesterday, Bella and Amelia may have given up hissing but are not yet kissing. Stay tuned Lovable and handsome Binky, who lost his home at age 15 when the baby arrived, is in need of a loving foster or respite home. He likes a little conversation once in a while, is an affectionate "head-butter", and purrs up a storm when his ears and head are massaged or he's brushed and fussed over. Please consider inviting sweet Binky to share your home! Here he is in his favorite (supervised) backyard pose (He knows he is really an inside cat!)
NMAF/STREET CAT COMPANIONS The following is now on the NMAF web site: "Street Cat Companions Feral Cat Spay/Neuter-Offering FREE surgeries VetCo is performing surgeries for New Mexico Animal Friends' spay/neuter program for free roaming and feral cats. For trap availability and surgery schedules contact Jayne Sage at 881 7297 option3 or 681 4713. Surgeries are performed during the week, which makes it easier and more convenient for the feral cat caregiver by giving them a large window to trap. Surgeries are performed free of charge, but donations are always welcome." The old information was directing the cats be taken to Humane on Sundays and listed a $15 fee. The Albuquerque Journal had a large front page article on feral cats. Most of it featured a neighborhood where the cats were causing damage and problems. Multiple sources were quoted saying TNR is the best program available today to reduce euthanasia. Later an editorial was printed saying people need to stop feeding and to spay/neuter to help control colonies. The city contract with Best Friends will be ending next year. Stay tuned for changes affecting this important part of NMAF. Contact the office or board for suggestions or offers of help. Help is needed now for handling all the cats going through. Future help will be needed for grant writing and publicity, funds for
maintaining the two paid positions and the van, and coordinating the continuance of the program without the BF grant. SUMMERTIME Keep your animals cool during the heat of the day and watch the temperature on sidewalks and pavements so as not to jeopardize their health! Have a safe and yappy summer!!
