January 17th Membership Meeting GANDER MOUNTAIN, 9923 GRANT STREET, THORNTON 6:30 PM AWARDS DINNER APRIL 27TH, MAGGIANO S January 8th Board Meeting MCLEAN RESIDENCE, 7 PM Please direct inquires to SIDUS@aol.com MHGRC NEWSLETTER President s Message Happy New Year MHGRC members December was a fun month with the annual Christmas party and a spectacular fun match followed by an introduc>on to the hunt test game. Based on what I ve been hearing the trend will con>nue as there are many great events in the works for 2014. March will be a busy month with the Golden Only Fun Match and Connie Cleveland s Seminar. 1

April follows with our three day Agility trial and the Awards Banquet. Also underway are plans for a WC/WCX, a two day specialty, a hunt test and so much more. I ve even heard rumblings of maybe another introductory training day for hunt tests. The chairs of these events are always in need of help. If you don t think you know enough to help or aren t involved in that venue, there are wonderful people that will mentor and show you the ropes. Whether you can only give a few hours at an Agility trial or a part day at the Specialty or even co- chair an event, whatever help you can give will greatly be appreciated. Even though you may have heard differently, it really is a lot of fun and you get to meet a lot of interes>ng people. So don t be shy Reach out to someone and if you don t know who, call or email me. Also, if you have an idea for an event, program, etc., please share as we are always open to new ideas. As many of you know, Laura Gillice has decided to leave the Board as the Agility Rep. Please join me in thanking her for all the contribu>ons she has made during her term. Jim Gregory has agreed to fill the Agility Rep posi>on and is already thinking about the 2015 trials. Way to go Jim The GRNews Field edi>on with MHGRC s Hun>ng Goldens is out and once again MHGRC s ad is spectacular. Sylvia Donahey- Feeney did another wonderful job pu]ng the ad together. If you don t get the GRNews, it will be posted on MHGRC s website. As this has been such a success, it was suggested that MHGRC do a similar ad in the GRNew Performance edi>on. If anyone is interested, please let me know as the proof needs to be completed early April. Lastly, I want to give a big thank to the current Board members and our beloved past President for all their work the past year preparing for 2014 and making sure every event goes off beau>fully. Please take a minute to thank them as they con>nue in their efforts. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday with family and friends. I look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming events. Sally November Mtg Minutes The mee>ng was called to order by President Anne Shannon at 8:15 p.m. following a presenta>on from OrthoPets. The minutes of the September 2013 mee>ng were approved as they appeared in the Newsleaer. Treasurer s Report Angela McLean reported that the current bank balance is $25,112. She suggested that we make a dona>on of $100. to OrthoPets. Sporting Dog Fun Match 2

OLD BUSINESS Vice- President s Report Bruce Evashevski reported that membership renewals are now due. Anne reminded everyone that the club Xmas Party will be held Dec. 7 at 11:30 a.m. at Bruce and Angela s house. The McLeans have asked people to bring their own chairs. Watch for a memo posted on Constant Contact with the food assignments. Goldens who are 10+ years old are welcome at the party- please RSVP if you are bringing your dog so there will be enough goodie bags. Other upcoming events include the Connie Cleveland Obedience seminar at the end of March and our regular Fun Match in mid March. The Awards banquet is April 27 at Maggianos at 11:30 a.m. Trophies need to go to Jean Herbert ASAP. Warren Frizell will collect the data on the awards. COMMITTEE REPORTS Obedience Monica Keracik was not at the mee>ng. Agility Laura Gillice was not present, and has requested that the club find someone to replace her as agility rep. The judges have been hired for the April and July trials in 2014, and the AKC event applica>ons have been completed. Kathy Janda will chair the agility por>on of the two day Specialty in August. Judges are s>ll needed for that event. Field Keith Winch had flyers to hand out for the December 15 intro to field event that will be held at Jeffco on the weekend of the Fun Match. He is looking for a chair for the WC/WCX for 2014 and also for the Hunt Test. The spring WC/WCX event has been shared with the Flatcoat Retriever Club, and Keith has proposed a change to the schedule that would run those tests on Saturday with Junior and Senior Tests on Sunday. The fall test would be the only one to offer Master Na>onal qualifying classes. Conforma>on Randy Watson men>oned that the conforma>on at the December Fun Match will be handled by the Mile High Spor>ng Dog Club but they will pay part of the building rental and equipment costs. He s>ll needs someone to pull the trailer. NEW BUSINESS A discussion was held about the possibility of hos>ng a Western Regional in 2014. Anne reviewed some of the GRCA requirements placed on the hos>ng club, which include the necessity of holding a WC/WCX, and that tradi>onally there is a dinner event with a Parade of Titleholders. Angela pointed out that we would need to have two sets of ribbons- some for our Independent Specialty and also for the Western Regional The event usually takes place in June, but our August dates could be okay instead. The Los Angeles club has backed out for 2014, and there are no other regional events scheduled right now. Taking on the Western Regional at this point would add quite a burden to our exis>ng trial chairs. The consensus at the mee>ng was that we would decline for 2014 but would consider it for 2015 when we would have sufficient >me to plan it and host it properly. A page proof for the GRNews ad for the Field issue was circulated. Thanks to Sally Sjobeck for pu]ng that together. Other New Business 3

Anne reported the results of recent club elec>ons. Sally Sjobeck will become the new President. Other officers and reps will con>nue from 2013. Anne brought up the possibility of mee>ng the AKC s President s Challenge which is a request of $200. to go to support canine legisla>ve ac>vi>es. MHGRC cannot contribute directly to any poli>cal efforts or it will effect our non- profit tax status. Linda Stranahan moved to make the contribu>on, seconded by Carol Hanl and passed. On the local level, Linda Stranahan also moved to renew our membership in Colorado Federa>on of Dog Clubs, which was seconded by Carol Hanl and passed. The mee>ng was adjourned at 8:55 p.m. As of December 31, 2013 Cash - $25,158.37 Financial Report by Angela McLean Income/(Loss) for Year ended December 31, 2013 April Agility Trial - 6,943.82 July Agility Trial - 6,802.36 Award Banquet - (1,487.51) Club Operations - (5,611.71) Donations - (1932.95) Fun Matches - (1,219.16) Hunt Test - (78.86) Seminars - 2,236.62 Specialty including CCA - (7,432.40) WC/WCX - (157.48) Net Loss - (1937.27) 4

Here is a liale inspira>on for the New Year whether it's an NQ in obedience or agility, not ge]ng a call- back in the field, or not making the cut in the show ring, it applies to all. What is an NQ, Really? Not an embarrassment, nor an effort to humiliate you, not even an act of stubborn defiance. An NQ is a tribute to your dog's willingness to try, and a demonstra>on of your own character. Your dog doesn't know or care that there was no score. This fact may remain in the record forever but no one will remember when you accept it with grace. And few humans do that well without prac>ce. Though an NQ may damage your pride, through it you can prac>ce humility, learn to accept defeat with dignity, and show courage while facing your fears. An NQ says that you loved spending >me with your dog, that you viewed her as a worthy teammate, that you believed in her so much that you wanted to show the world how wonderful she is. In a world of mul>- tasking and shallow interac>ons, an NQ shows that you shared a deep connec>on, that you gave each other everything you had, and that your dog is a cherished friend, not an ego stroke.. Because when the day is done and the trial over, an NQ proves that you accept your dog, flaws and all, that you respect her efforts, no maaer how poor, and that it is not winning, but love, that maaers. 9
