Bulletin The world of domestic pigeon rarities Vice-President s Message from James D Fathbruckner Hello Fellow Rare Breed Club Members! We have had a busy year in 2011 with the 40th year celebrations and our continued growth in club meets and an increase in the variety of breeds. The 2012 National held in Florida was lower in the number of rares; however, the variety of breeds and number of breeders was very positive. Ron Davis worked very hard to get the Grand National for Florida, but during the planning stages his old illness resurfaced, forcing him to withdraw from active participation. Then, after this message had been sent to Frank and Scott, the Bulletin team, the sad news of Ron s passing was spreading rapidly throughout the pigeon fraternity. Ron will be missed by us all and the hobby has lost a stalwart and an Vale Ron Davis individual always ready to help his fellow fanciers, beginners or novices. Included in this newsletter is a ballot for officers for the club and I urge you to vote. During the coming year we will have meets all over the country and please feel free to contact me about the meets with the locations and the dates so we can put them in the bulletin. Also provide me with the Rare Breeds judges used in your areas. At this time many of you are busy breeding and raising your champions for the coming year. With the coming of 2012 we will be continuing our push forward for bigger and better things for Rare Breeds and pigeons in general. James D. Accredited Judges Here is a list of the people who have judged Rare Breed Specialty Shows in the past. If you are putting on a show and are looking for qualified judges then you can choose a member from the list or check with James Fathbruckner as the member in charge of our club s Judging Program. John Heppner Terry daily John De Carlo jr Don Roscoe James Fathbruckner Joe Powers Tony Patti Phil Gonzales Ron White Wayne Fischer Amy Klopman John Navant Brad Child Paul Gibson Nickolas Fontenot Steve Yonke Jack Milkerson Don Chevalier Eric Kooker Larry Gardner This is a fine group of people to pick from for judging your next Rare Breeds event, but they are of course not the only qualified Judges. However, if you want to use another judge then you must get your choice approved. This list is only inclusive of the people who judged events in 2009. We are in the process of compiling a more complete list and if you want to add a name or add your own name, then please contact me and I will submit it to the judging coordinator. It is our goal to have a comprehensive list of names of qualified judges and a judging program to train future judges. Please submit your ideas to me. Thanks, Scott Overdue membership 3 It has come to the club s attention that many members are far behind in dues, with some members being carried by the club since 2006. The club voted to have James Fathbruckner send out a letter to the members who have fallen behind to see if they are interested in catching up on their dues or preferring to be dropped from the membership list. If you plan to vote for new officers then be advised that only those votes from members in good standing will be counted. If you would like to catch up on your dues then please send your money and information to Link Martin. A REMINDER The new points system is now in place A Shikli Ahmar (Kinifirli) in flight Photographed in the loft of Turkish fancier Ersoy Koldas Last show season your club approved a new points system to be used in judging. It follows the old system, but simplifies the process for better clarity in awarding points. 4 Forewarned is forearmed I need to advise you on this - and please spread the word around if you hear of anyone who is having sick birds right now. I have been sick since Reading. Been up and down with it until this past week when it got worse and I went to the doctor. He felt I had atypical pneumonia. Sent me for blood tests and x-rays. The CBC he ordered all came back within normal ranges, so nothing to say it was tied to fungal, bacterial or animal dust such as pigeon breeder lung. Then this evening he called on the x-rays lungs show typical signs of chlamydia infection. With that he has changed my meds from what he put me on to doxycycline which is the best antibiotic for psittacosis chlamydia. That being said if you hear of anyone with sick or dying birds, here is what they need to do to treat for this chlamydia [what pigeon people call ornithosis] infection. Antibiotics tetracyclines are the only real effective medicine to use per the USDA. Best one I have found is Tetra Bac 324 - I get it from Jeffers Livestock (they are on-line) and Tony Patti at New England Pigeon & Livestock has it too. Treat for 45 days [yes that long per the USDA] at 2 teaspoons per gallon of water if the grit is removed. If you are breeding, then you can leave the grit with the birds but you must go to 3 teaspoons per gallon of water. Fresh each day in open waterers, but closed bottles [for individual pen breeding] you can go 2 or 3 days without changing it. No issues using this when breeding I have had to do it several times. Vitamins and probitoics can be added if you desire to do so. While treating with the meds you need to disinfect the loft as well on a weekly basis. Tek Trol is a proven disinfectant to use to kill the chlamydia that lies [from the dried feces] in the loft. Use warm water [follow directions for amount to use] and get the loft wet enough to stay wet for at least ten minutes. Ceiling, down the walls, perches, nest boxes, nest bowls, eggs, take babies out spray the nest and return them [they A good warning from Joe Powers to remind us all to not bring birds to the show hall when we have sick birds at home will not be hurt] feed and water covers and so on over the entire loft. If deep litter, spray it well, then rake it over and spray heavily again. Tek Trol has a 7 10 day residual effect so spraying once a week will do it. But it must be done for the entire time of treatment. Do not stop treating if the birds seem better it takes 45 days to stop the chlamydia from living and breeding. Tony Patti has the Tek Trol. Jeffers does as well, but will not send it to all States while Tony does [I believe]. This disinfectant is not harmful to birds mixed properly. I ve sprayed birds directly to see if it would affect them and it did not. Hatcheries dip their eggs in it prior to setting as well as use it to clean the incubators. Before you use any other disinfectant make sure it works in manure [loft litter and nests] and find out the residual effect it has you may have to spray more often. Clorox is not going to work well on loft litter I have been told. It is a waste of time and it has little lasting effect. And how safe is it to spray on eggs [and expect them to hatch] or on babies? Usually after ten days or so the birds will look and be better. But it is most important that the 45 days are done. I cannot stress that enough. This is the fourth time I have had this and it is getting real old I can tell you. All because people are showing birds when they have sickness at home. Each time I have had it I know where I got it I am apparently somewhat susceptible. Anyway the first time I was not feeling well before I left the show hall. This time I was sick the next day. I almost died the first time I had it and the second was not a whole lot better. This time [and the third time] has not been as bad. But it has caused lung damage to me having it so often. But I have two weeks [maybe a month?] of meds to take twice a day before this is gone from me - if I am lucky. It is all very frustrating. More likely I have some susceptibility to it but when judging 250, 300 or more birds in one day the exposure I get is super high in relation to any one else in the show hall. Any questions on any of this feel free to give me a call. And do pass this around I really do not want to get this again doctor bills alone are nasty not to mention treating my birds every year to be sure that they do not have it. The risk to ones body is high if a person has it and does not treat properly. Can go to heart and affect heart valves or to the brain and cause meningitis. 6 5th Trustee for Legacy Fund By Fred Thoelke, Trust Chairman Don Roscoe, Wayne Fischer, John Heppner and I welcome our newest Trustee, Jerry Gagne. Jerry s appointment, running until the 2015 election cycle, fulfills the Legacy Fund Trust Agreement s legal mandate of having up to five Trustees who oversee and safeguard Trust assets, while assuring that there is accountability for investment income spent on well defined NPA projects. Jerry has a vast array of attributes which make him well qualified for the task and we thank him for accepting. Jerry, as many of you may be aware, is deeply involved with the pigeon hobby, being a pigeon fancier himself and the owner of Foy s Pigeon Supply Co., America s oldest bird supply company. Many may not realize that owning and operating a business means that you live that business pretty much 24/7. The next generation of Gagne family members are now quite involved with the Foy s Pigeon Supply business, therefore it would follow that Jerry has a very positive long-term view of and for the pigeon hobby as well as the NPA. Jerry Gagne has a track record of being good for the pigeon hobby and good for the NPA. Jerry has served as Eastern Vice President of the NPA, is an authorized NPA band agent and continuously advertises and promotes the NPA in his catalogs. During the past several years, Jerry has become one of the largest individual financial supporters of the NPA by donating many thousands of dollars. Jerry as an original author is currently in the final stages of publishing what will likely become a much sought after and collectible book on Pigeon lofts. Active, engaged, promotionally minded, responsible, generous and capable, Jerry will make an exceptional Trustee. 4/28 Michigan Bird and Game Breeders (MBGBA)Swap in Imlay City 5/5 Wolf Lake In Swap 5/12 MPC Swap 6/9 MBGBA Swap Charlotte 6/30 MPC Swap and Masserant s Annual Squeaker Show and Picnic 7/7 Wolf Lake Swap 8/4 MBGBA Swap Clare 8/25 MPC Swap 9/15 Fremont Young Bird Show and MBGBA Montrose 10/13 Bay City Young Bird Show and MB- GBA Hudsonville 10/26 and 27 NYBS 11/3 Western Michigan Pigeon Show 11/24 Indiana Pigeon Club Winter Show 12/1 MPC Winter Show 12/8 Des Moines 1/5/13 Fremont Winter Show 1/17-18-19 Grand National Show, WA 1/19 Lancaster Show 1/26 Bay City Winter Show BUY SELL SWAP There s no charge for listing in this section of the RBPC Bulletin.
