HPPR_February_2014_Newsletter.doc HPPR Newsletter, November 2014 Volume 2, Issue 3 Halloween Pet Precautions... 1 Our Holiday Auction... 2 Faux PAWS... 5 There is HOPE for This World...5 Custom Greeting Cards...6 Halloween Pet Dos and Don'ts By Lindsay Stordahl, Reprinted from ThatMutt.com D Don't leave your pet unsupervised while he's in costume. He may chew on or pull off his Superman cape or pirate hat and hurt himself in the process. D Do make sure your pup's Princess Leia outfit doesn't obstruct her vision or hearing. D Don't let Kitty or Spot near lighted jack-o-lanterns or other potentially dangerous decorations. D Do keep candy out of reach chocolate in particular can be toxic to dogs and cats, but too much of any unfamiliar food can mess with their tummies (and leave you with some gnarly clean-up "duties"). D Don't let your black cat wander outside at any time, but especially on Halloween night she could be a target for pranksters. D Do make sure your pets' tags and/or microchips have up-to-date contact information, just in case. Editor's Note: If you have feline or canine trick-or-treaters, have some healthy pet treats to offer these special ghosts and goblins. 1

Faux PAWS: socially awkward or tactless acts, especially those that violate accepted social pet norms, standard customs, or the rules of petiquette. This is my sister Gwen and my name is Maharet like the vampire. I don't drink blood though. Instead, Gwen and I like a nice latte. Mom brought one home and left it on the table while she went back to get something from the car. The bad news is, we spilled it all over the table. The good news is, we blamed it on the dog! I knew that dog was good for something! -- Maharet (With Gwen) My family entertains a lot, and I am a PAWty Animal! I mingle at cocktail PAWties and, when I spot a likely victim, I stealthily sneak up behind and let loose with a deafening WOOF! According to plan, the tidbit the guest is holding drops neatly into my waiting jaws. Once, a guest held a tidbit aloft and shouted, "Here Roger! Come boy!" As I catapulted across the room, she swiftly opened the door to the kitchen and hurled the tidbit through the doorway. I launched myself after it, and realized she had secured the door behind me and I was imprisoned in the kitchen...well, there ARE worse fates! -- Roger There is HOPE for This World Pet rescue is all about happy endings and that is certainly the case for little Hope who found her purrfect forever home. Hope's new mom describes her as playful, sweet and the perfect kitten for our family. Hope has been successfully introduced to a family member's adult male kitty and is soon to be making the acquaintance of the family dog. She shows her appreciation for her happy new home by purring constantly whenever a human is in the room and she loves to groom her new mom. Let's hope that all of virtue kittens are as lucky as sister Hope! 5

Custom Greeting Cards in Return for a Donation to HPPR Would you like a customized graphic of your family group (pets, horses, birds, humans, etc) that you could personalize and print to send as your holiday greeting in return for a monetary donation to HPPR? Or would you like greeting cards for other occasions such as birthdays, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, etc? If so: Look at some of the samples on display or HPPR members to give you some Full size graphics and more ideas can be found at http://ourhelpingpaws.com/custom_cards.html. Feel free to run other ideas past us to see if something is a possibility. This is particularly true if you want a card for an occasion other than Christmas. Send me good pictures of your pets, humans, etc. They don t necessarily have to be facing the camera, but make sure that I know who is whom. The pictures should be large, but at least should be of high resolution if they are fairly small. If you are in doubt as to whether a picture is large enough or of high enough quality, send it to me for evaluation. Knowing the approximate size of the final printout would help in this. If you choose the Dickens carolers design, they SHOULD ideally have their mouths open to look like they are singing. Be sure to tell us the sex of each pet so that we can dress them in appropriate clothing if that is an aspect of the design you have chosen. If you love or hate certain colors, please be sure to let us know. Otherwise, we will use colors that go together well and bring out the features of the pet or human. The background color can be different from the examples. Gradients are nice since they look like the glow from lights, but solid colors would also look nice. Please specify or ask for samples if you prefer a different color gradient. Often we send several images each with a different background so that you can choose which you prefer. The finished graphics will be emailed to you in jpeg or png format, which you can personalize and print on a color printer, have them printed at your local business supply store (Staples, etc), or you can use VistaPrint. Upon request, we can also send graphics in PSD format with the layers intact. If you use the Goodshop portal, HPPR gets a percentage of your printing costs as an additional donation. That is a win-win for the rescue! Then make your donation at http://ourhelpingpaws.com/custom_cards.html. Email webmaster@ourhelpingpaws.com if you have questions. 6
