Activities Who s the Leader? Practice nonverbal communication and stealth so that you can hunt just like Graystripe and Millie. Don t forget to put on your mask! What You Do 1. Have the participants form a circle. 2. Choose one person to be the detective and have him/her stand in the middle of the circle. 3. Ask the detective to close his/her eyes and then choose another person to be the leader. 4. With the detective s eyes closed, have the leader start the first repetitive movement, such as clapping hands, stomping feet, or snapping fingers. The rest of the group joins in repeating the same movement. 5. Ask the detective to open his/her eyes. 6. The job of the detective is to try and figure out whom the leader is while the leader tries to change the group s movements without the detective finding out who changed them. 7. The detective has three chances to guess correctly, after which he/she joins the circle and the leader becomes the detective. If the detective does not guess correctly in three chances, that round finishes and you can start again from the beginning! Scavenger Hunt In the wild, Millie and Graystripe have to hunt for their food. Create your own hunt using items in your store! This is just one example, so be creative and create your own! What You Do 1. Before the event, pick several books from different sections in the store. Find something in each book that participants have to find for example, a map of your city in an atlas, or a recipe for lasagna in a cookbook. 2. Write up clues for each book. 3. On the day of the event, divide the participants into groups and give each group several clues. 4. The first group to find all of their treasures wins!

What Helps the Cat Survive Cats have special behaviors and body parts that help them get food, keep safe, and live in their environment. These special behaviors and body parts are called adaptations. For example, cats living in warm places have short coats to help them keep cool. Cats living in cold places have thick, shaggy coats to help them stay warm. Use the picture to learn about other adaptations that help cats survive. Then answer the questions. TAIL Cats use their long tails to help keep their balance and communicate with other cats. LEGS Cats have strong legs to help them run and jump. EYESIGHT Cats have sharp eyesight, especially at night. PAWS Cats have soft paws so they can run quietly and catch other animals to eat. HEARING Cats have large, cup-shaped ears and very good hearing. SMELL Cats have a strong sense of smell. They use it to hunt and recognize other tigers. TEETH Cats have 30 teeth. Many are sharp. CLAWS Cats have sharp claws. They can pull in their claws when they walk on hard rocks. 1. Cats are most active at night. What adaptations help cats hunt at night? 2. How do you know cats can move quickly? 3. What do cats have to help protect them? Give one example. 4. What body part do cats use to communicate with one another? JUST FOR FUN: Color in the picture of Graystripe!
