NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB Golden Notes www.norcalgrc.org Elected Officers: President Eileen Oshiro Secretary/ Treasurer Lisa Newton 1675 Fallen Leaf Los Altos, CA 94024 VP Performance Terry Southard VP Breed Jeanetta Gulden VP Field Debbie Tandoc NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 From the President VOLUME 42, ISSUE VI Another year is coming to an end. When I think about all the activities that NORCAL puts on, I'm amazed at how our members compete in so many arenas! From the breed ring, obedience trials, rally, to hunt tests, agility trials, tracking tests, and field trials, our members are out there every weekend with their Goldens. The true multi-purpose Golden Retriever. I don't know of many clubs that are as active as we are. Take a bow everyone! At this point you should all be filling out your forms for the 2012 Awards, renewing your membership, reserving your space at the Dr Claudia Orlandi seminar, and renewing your membership in GRCA. It's also time to reflect on all that's happened during the year - birth and death, love and hopefully not much hate. Remember to take time for family, friends, Goldens and yourself. We want to see you all for years to come. Happy Holidays! Eileen Oshiro Director Nancy Kelly Director Linda Lang Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Letty Regan In Memoriam Charlotte Gaynor is saddened to let Norcal GRC know that on November 19, she lost her dear "Ritzi",Trumpet's Near Nuff, JH, SH, three MH q/s, CD, CDX, UD, RN, RA, RE, NAJ, CGC, WC, WCX. at 10 years of age. Charlotte was the breeder, owner, and handler for most of the titles. Charlotte's favorites were Ritzi's last two Master Hunter qualifying scores that she and Ritzi earned together. Ritzi made Charlotte proud of all that she accomplished in addition to leaving a legacy of talented offspring. Ritzi lives on in Charlotte's heart and will be dearly missed. GOLDEN NOTES General Meeting Minutes and Board Meeting Minutes Page 2 Minutes of Board and General Meeting of Norcal Golden Retriever Club Date: November 3, 2012 at Jones Lake, Pescadero, CA Meeting called to order at 9:15 a.m. at Jones Lake. In attendance: President Eileen Oshiro, Secretary Lisa Newton, Director Nancy Kelly, and general membership. SECRETARY S REPORT: Letter received from Canine Health Foundation requesting donation. After discussion, agreed we would continue to donate primarily to golden retriever focused organizations. TREASURER S REPORT: Given via email from treasurer Patty Simmons: Checking account balance is $34,951.00. BREED REPORT: Jeanetta Gulden is not available to attend today s meeting. We thank Jennifer Masterson for a job very well done at this year s specialty. (Round of applause.) Toni Maita and Jeanetta Gulden will chair next year s specialty show. PERFORMANCE REPORT: Terry Southard is not available to attend today s meeting. Eileen reminds us that we still need volunteers to organize and manage the fun match next August at Kirigin Cellars. Terry and Dimity will mentor the new chairpersons for this event. We will ask Terry to reserve next year s match date even though we haven t volunteers as yet. The trailer hitch is in need of repair before it can be towed again, but we have considerable time before we need it to get this repair done properly possibly by someone who does trailer repair at the fairgrounds. The Claudia Orlandi Seminar flyers are available and on our website as well. AGILITY REPORT: Linda Lang will continue to chair and mentor agility events although she will be going off the board at next election. FIELD REPORT: Debbie Tandoc thanks Susan Osborne and Nancy Kelly for taking over the picnic days. Susan reports the next one will likely be held in late January or February. Wendy Johnston reports we can book Jones Lake ahead of time for special event use such as this, and Susan can work with Wendy and Pat Johnson for available dates. Scott Woodland will be our new VP for Field. Thank you Scott! Debbie will continue to chair the hunt tests and assist, and Susan Osborne will chair the next WC/ WCX. Hopefully we will have a few training days before the Monterey Bay hunt test which is Feb 16/17. Our hunt test is March 23/24, and our WC scheduled for May 11. The Hills Ferry test is March 9/10, so we will try to fit something in, a flyer day or picnic trial, ahead of those dates. The damage to the field trailer from the broken tree branch has been repaired, and we thank a joint effort by Scott Woodland, Bruce, Nelson Tandoc, and Bill Taylor for their work to repair it for us without charge and sparing us an insurance claim. NEW BUSINESS: Nominations: The Nominating Committee has suggested the following slate to replace those persons whose board terms are expiring (Debbie Tandoc, Jeanetta Gulden, Lisa Newton, Linda Lang): Field VP: Scott Woodland Breed VP: Robin Baker Director: Pam McDonald Secretary: Lisa Newton No other nominations were received at this meeting. OLD BUSINESS: Reminder that the Claudia Orlandi breed seminar is in January. 2016 National: Regarding the National, we are waiting for pricing from the fairgrounds personnel. Eileen Oshiro walked the grounds with Dale Miskelly and Debbie Claussen during the Del Valle weekend. They discussed moving to the rose garden area, but it is too far from the parking. Also discussed moving agility over from its present locale but the grove is too narrow so it will stay in current location. Obedience will be indoors. RV, day of show parking will be in lot with plenty of space. Grooming tents require a large area and plenty of power, and we are considering the asphalt area between the orchard and the fairground buildings. Shall we continue to hold the specialty on Saturday? We can keep it simple. Hospitality is the biggest issue as we would need to provide lunch for the judges, so we would need a separate hospitality committee for this event. The field event location has yet to be determined. Debbie Tandoc has judges in mind and will consult with Glenda Brown, and reports we will likely use Woodward Reservoir area for the field trial. We can make use of Entry Express services as well. The field trial requires a separate welcome dinner and awards banquet. The welcome dinner can be a catered barbecue type dinner. Discussion regarding possibilities for field trial trophies, such as traditional crystal, etc. Cast statues of goldens, each geared toward a particular event, are being considered; for example, a golden holding a dumbbell, a bird, in conformation stack, jumping an A-frame, etc. Eileen notes that Sharon Bolton (sp?) is putting together a big binder from the 2012 National to continue to help us plan and organize for our 2016 event. Discussion regarding potential chairs for agility event at National. Awards Banquet: Will be held on February 24 th at the Girasole restaurant in Pleasanton. Suzanne Bria and Ann Brown will make the reservations for this event. Reminder to get your awards in! Equipment Offer: Eileen mentions that there have been no takers for the ultrasound machine being offered to our club by Veterinarian Helen Hamilton. There being no further business, meeting adjourned at 10:15 a.m. with fun field training and lunch to follow. Respectfully submitted, Lisa Newton Secretary

Page 3 VOLUME 42, ISSUE VI INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL MEMBERS! ************************************************************************************************* NORCAL GRC proudly presents THE ABC'S OF DOG BREEDING, a one-day seminar with Claudia Orlandi, PhD! When: Saturday, January 12, 2013, 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Where: Cypress Semiconductor, Building 6 Auditorium, 198 Champion Court, San Jose, CA 95134 What: Dog breeding demystified! Anyone can breed one or two good dogs by chance, but understanding why something happens in a breeding program is an important key to producing healthy dogs of consistent quality year after year. Dr. Orlandi's program is a practical, step-by-step approach to the art and science of breeding, presented in an enjoyable and easy-to-follow format. This comprehensive seminar also encompasses Practical Canine Anatomy and Movement, and includes a hands-on workshop with live dogs where attendees will learn how to correctly evaluate front and rear angulation in dogs. Fee: $85 per person - includes seminar, morning hospitality & lunch, and 470-page seminar home study workbook, which normally retails for $35 per copy with shipping & handling! Registration: Download flier with entry form from the NORCAL website at http://www.norcalgrc.org. Send completed entry form with check made payable to NORCAL GRC to Terry Southard, 1465 Gerlach Drive, San Jose, CA 95118. No refunds after 12/31/12. For information contact Terry Southard at terry@coppertop.net or phone 408-723-3348 between 9AM and 8PM. Note: Please leave dogs at home; only pre-approved demo dogs will be allowed in the building. Holidays aren t just stressful for people; during this time of year, shelters often take in dogs that have run away from homes because of anxiety and opportunity. While owners are preoccupied by guests, uneasy dogs can run past unattended doors. Keep pets in their crates or a quiet room when entertaining friends and family. Another potential problem ornaments and holiday decorations your dog may find appetizing. Keep all decorations out of dog s way and avoid these potentially harmful table scraps. It is best to stick to your pet s regular diet. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! Leslie and Terry Hurdy Carla Campbell Patricia Romeiro
