Sarah was unable to attend the meeting, but on behalf of ABOCI, Audrey Austin awarded her a lovely medal and stand for the accomplishment. The OTCH requires years of devoted practice and competition with much precision. We are so proud of you, Sarah and Baylor! It was truly a delight to see so many people engaging in interesting conversation and acknowledging members who received titles and awards this year. Most of what follows was in an email I sent the week after the meeting. I want to include it here for those who missed the email. I d like to extend special thanks to Greg Coler and Joy Gilmore for helping with the meeting. Greg did most of the work on the award plaques and helped with presentations and some of the meeting logistics. Joy came up with the brilliant idea for door prizes--she chose them and ran the raffle end of things, plus she helped keep me on track during the meeting. Thank you, thank you both so much! Here are some other things that happened at the meeting. We agreed to donate $100 to Hidden Valley Obedience Club for the Highin-Trial trophy for their October event, as we do each year. One of our goals is to donate to other worthy dog-related causes. There were many suggestions and lots of passionate discussion on an amount to donate and to whom. The group voted to send $500 to the National Animal Interest Alliance: http:// www.naiaonline.org/ Our faithful treasurer, Sarah Ball, has already submitted both donations. President s Message The club unanimously elected the proposed slate of officers: Treasurer - Sarah Ball Secretary - Greg Coler Vice President - Eleni Stevens President - Karen Anderson Audrey Austin will be the member at large :) Lonni Ruskin won the cart with great joy. The smile on her face made it so worth it. Joan Mc Adam won the cool bait bag and Connie Kaplan won the lotus ball. Joy continued the game by giving out about 9 ABOCI pins and zipper pulls. Location Activities I am about to focus once again on working with a team of ABOCI members to put together a presentation for San Diego Parks and Rec about the possibility of off-leash training exercises in parks for dogs with a minimum obedience title. I m not holding my breath, but I do think there is potential for this to be successful, especially with the trainers and members in our club who can demonstrate the difference between a dog who is well-trained in obedience and a dog who is not. Please contact me if you would like to contribute to this effort. The project to develop a San Diego Dog/Human Sports Center is currently on hold. I did see an email circulating last week about pulling the San Diego dog clubs together to develop a venue for dog shows. This is slightly different, but along the same line and I m wondering if the two efforts can be combined. 2
Presidents Message Continued... That s all folks. Hopefully we can put together an activity in September just for fun. Have a lovely summer! Karen Anderson President kiadenune@gmail.com 858.531.5230 Memories & Announcements groaned under her breath just a little, saying we had to take everything out. The car had to be loaded differently so Rinny would also fit (yes, she wanted to take her dog home with her). Scotty proceeded to direct me to take everything out of the car so Joan could tell us the correct way. Somehow it wasn t offensive--she really was just trying to help. Dog Dayz Of Summer 2017 When: Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 9 a.m. Where: Fiesta Island Off-Leash Dog Park, 1590 E Mission Bay Dr., San Diego, CA 92123 AGES: All ages Goodbye to Scotty... This year we lost a dear friend and dog lover, Scotty Maloney. I didn t know her as well as most of you, but I do still think of her as a permanent fixture in the club and I do feel her absence. I want to share a few Scotty stories that warm my heart: My first memory of her is from taking Joan Mc Adams rally class. I don t think Scotty was in the class, but she was there for something else when we were taking down the ring. Scotty directed me to carry the items over to Joan s car, then directed me to put them in the car in a specific way. Joan came over and In December, the day of the ABOCI holiday party in my home, Scotty called about two hours before the party and asked if I needed anything. I told her I had everything covered--she proceeded to name about five really helpful things I hadn t thought of. She helped so much by making the time to call me, thinking of everything, and showing up a little bit early so everything would be just right. Then in January and February, she jumped on the Greyhound Rescue Pay and Play events by enthusiastically agreeing to coordinate ABOCI s obedience and rally rings. The club brought in a couple of not-too-shabby hunks of money for Greyhound rescue while having great fun with our dogs. Sally Nesbitt organized a magnificent sendoff for Scotty at her church in El Cajon. Scotty was quite pleased, I am confident, because Sally, too, thought of everything. She set up obedience rings, ordered plenty of wonderful food, provided spray bottles for the hot day, and made sure everyone was invited and felt welcome. I know Sally had lots of help--thanks to everyone who made the day quite extraordinary for an extraordinary woman. 3 This fun celebration of National Dog Day will feature free samples, licensing, micro-chipping and vaccinations. Sponsored by City Councilmember Lorie Zapf, along with FIDO, the City of San Diego, and the Humane Society. Bring your dogs and join us for Fiesta Island fun at the fenced dog walk area on the southwest part of the island. From Karen: The office of City Council Member Lorie Zapf contacted us to see if we would like to participate in this event with demos and a booth. The event will be from 9am to 11am in the over the line (OTL) area. There's been some interest from club members in doing demos of activities/sports we do with our dogs. It would also be good to have flyers and a body or two to work the booth. Please let me know if you have ideas for demos or would like to help with the booth. Shade popups are needed also."
BRAGS, BRAGS & MORE BRAGS CATHY COLLEY & APRIL AND HAZY the end of May with 3 Majors. The next day I moved her up to Best of Breed and she won BOB over 4 Specials and a Group 2. She now has 4 Grand Championship Points including Major GrCH Points. She has 77 OTCH Points and I hope to WINDY, BARN HUNT FUN! This past Spring, all three dogs have been training and competing in Barn Hunt. We have been training at Paula Cingota s Cathy Colley and the girls Summerfield Kennels in Jamul. The trials have been held at Silver Rose JOANNE GRIFFIN and LYRIC Ranch in Chino Hills, CA. CH. Westernesse Jammin' Live Jazz April, Windy, & Hazy all passed their UDX3 OM5 RN HT CA CGCA TKN Instinct Test, and received the RATI TKI TKA title. This will be her first and only litter as she just turned 5 yrs old. I got Lyric at 10 1/2 weeks old from Windy & April earned Novice legs, and Windy had a 2nd place. Hazy completed her Barn Hunt Novice title for the RATN title. Hazy also earned a 2nd place in one of her runs. Really fun sport & most all dogs can do it April is 13 yrs. old and she had a blast! AKC even recognizes the titles now! her breeder Joyce Herie of Westernesse Shelties. I tested the litter by taking Lyric just finished her Championship them individually to an area of the 4
BRAGS, BRAGS & MORE BRAGS house they had never been in before to test for environmental stability and confidence. I also worked with them individually that day on tug-of-war and retrieving a piece of crumpled white paper. I was looking for stamina and sustained interest in those areas. I also used a tease pole with sheepskin at the end of it with the whole litter to see who was brave and would dive in and maintain their chase drive without being concerned about being jostled by their littermates. Joyce has ducks and the puppies were very keen and would try to get into the duck pen. I took Lyric home and so began our journey. When Lyric was older I took her up to Joyce's house and we tested her on the ducks. She has great herding instinct. Right before the National in 2016 I started working Lyric on Sheep. Joyce took her in Herding at the 2016 National and she was tested on goats (which she had never worked goats before) and she earned her 1st HT leg. She was also High in Trial and High Combined at the 2016 National from the Utility B and the Open B Obedience classes and she also earned her 1st RN leg and made the cut in the Open Sable Class under Breeder judge Yvonne Samuelson.. During 2016 and 2017 I showed her in Obedience and Conformation often at the same show. She had no problem transitioning from one to the other and back again. as she loves herding. I teach Competition Obedience and Trick Classes and at the end of May 2017 she was Tested for the New AKC Trick Titles. She earned her TKN, TKI, and TKA titles. Tricks are tons of fun and Lyric just loves to do tricks. In 2018 I plan on showing her in Agility, On a whim this year I decided to enter the AKC Lure Coursing test at the Kachina KC show in AZ. She LOVED it and earned her CA title in one weekend. To this day if she thinks there might possibly be lure coursing at a show she drags me barking and pulling over to it. She loves it! finishing her Grand Championship, getting her PT, and showing her in Obedience as a CH/OTCH. JoAnne Griffin DVM In 2017 I started working her on Sheep again and Joyce took her in at the 2017 National and she earned her HT! Plans for Herding are a PT and maybe beyond 5
BRAGS, BRAGS & MORE BRAGS CATHERINE ZINSKY & DEVIN Devon has both beauty and brains: At the Del Sur Obedience Trials Devon was HIGH IN TRIAL March 18, 2017 Under Judge Richard Strong And the next day Devon was both HIGH IN TRIAL AND HIGH COMBINED! under Judge Pat Strong. What a weekend!! Can t begin to say how thrilled I am with this youngster of mine. It is a privilege and honor to be sharing life s journey with him. 6
BRAGS, BRAGS & MORE BRAGS Had a banner weekend at Lake Matthews Kennel Club Shows and Trials. I am positively delighted to share with you all the great news that my little Devon (3 years old, but still my baby) finished his GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP. He is now officially: GCH CH OTCH Sporting Field's Quantum Leap, UDX2, OM4 Okay, the GCH is a confirmation of his beauty. But this boy also has brains! In obedience Devon was just "ON". Saturday, May 29th, Devon placed 1st in Utility B under Judge Bob Margolis with 198.5. He then also placed 1st Open B under Judge Pauline Andrus 197.5. Devon was HIGH IN TRIAL and HIGH COMBINED! In obedience on Sunday, May30, Devon won Utility B under Judge Pauline Andrus (198.5) and then went on to win Open B under Judge Bob Margolis (197.5). Once again Devon was HIGH IN TRIAL and HIGH COMBINED! What's especially rewarding is that Devon delights in obedience competitions, and particularly enjoys Utility. When I say "Let's heel," his eyes simply light up. Who could ask for more from their team partner? Love this boy! 7
