Next Meeting: If needed, October 25, 2012, if not Regular meeting: November 15, 2012 Adjournment Motion: (Sharon) Motion to adjourn. Approve: All XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXX Harrier Club of America Board of Directors Meeting Thursday, August 30, 2012 Present: Barbara Fox Mindy Isham Wendy McCleery Sharon Manning Lurine Norwood Kevin Shupenia Mike Walsh Absent: Sharon was unable to attend the entire meeting. Minutes of Last Meeting The remainder of the minutes is approved. 23

Report of President Did everyone receive the latest version of what the AKC Book of Dogs includes on Harriers? Lurine did not. Wendy will send. What does everybody think? Think there is one inaccuracy: scratch pack. Think that only pertains to Beagles. Look it over. Must discuss at next meeting. November is the deadline for feedback to the AKC. Report of Secretary Nothing new. Report of Treasurer There is $9078.67 in checking, $3008.10 savings/rescue, for a total of $12,886.77. Made a deposit of $240/dues and trophies. Need to write checks to Wendy, Mindy, and insurance company. Reports of Committees 2012 Specialty It will cost us an additional $50 for a certificate of insurance required by the fairgrounds. Obedience and rally will be held at an indoor ring, which isn t reflected in the premium list. There will be awards of merit, which isn t reflected in the premium list. (Will send out separate mailing to club members.) There isn t a ribbon listed for the jr. handler, which is an error. Trophies: We wanted to retire what we thought was a challenge trophy (Turns out it actually is not, it was just listed incorrectly in past premium lists.) and ran into difficulties. There are three types of trophies given at AKC dog shows. BOB trophy: no criteria, no retirement Challenge trophy: criteria involved, therefore must be officially retired. Perpetual: no criteria, no retirement AKC advises: don t offer challenge trophies - Created an embroidered patch, which will be used on luggage and chairs. Or24

- Created an embroidered patch, which will be used on luggage and chairs. Ordered 12 patches to get best price. Will order chairs. (Wendy) - Need information on entries ASAP after they close. - Judges Education Kevin will verify with Donna that she is not attending. Barbara & Wendy will deliver judges education. It will be held on Friday evening at 7 PM. Dogs: have enough examples. Need 2-3 Laptop(s) with CDs. Need to find out if the room has power. Need a ring inside to do hands-on. It will be dark so it has to be inside. Unfinished Business Admitting Members From Outside U.S. Kevin talked to an AKC rep. No issue with AKC; other clubs have foreign members. But the Harrier Club is very small and there could be consequences. If you re a large club, having a few members from outside the US, no problem. If you are a small club, and admit a large number of new voting members (or even a small number of voting members) from outside the US, they could actually make changes to your club. They could have enough of a quorum, which could cause unintended issues. Also the AKC would have no way to sanction someone from another country. We could create new category, but it would require changing the By-laws. Could admit them as Friends of the HCA, send them the Newsletter, create a special column in the Newsletter for news from overseas, and if they want to contribute monetarily, they could sponsor a trophy at the Specialty. Motion: (Kevin) Recommend that we create an unofficial Friends of the HCA that includes Harrier owners from outside the U.S. who will receive the newsletter and may contribute pictures, articles, etc., will not pay dues, and will not have voting privileges. If they would like to contribute to the club, trophy donations for the specialty would be happily accepted. Approve: all 25

-Include this as an agenda item at the annual meeting. Sportsmanship Award Send an email reminder to members asking for nominations. (MI) Next year: Ask for nominations at the annual meeting. Nominations can be submitted privately, on paper to any board member. Meet the Breed/NYC Kevin recommended that we reverse our original decision not to support the Meet the Breeds in NYC, and ask Mary to go ahead and represent us. Does she need any materials? Health Survey As of September 15, the lawyers will provide the final information (think there was 39 responses). Election of New Members George St. Germain Robyn Sage Motion: (Lurine) Accept George St. Germain and Robyn Sage as HCA members. Robyn is accepted as a junior member. Approve: All New Business Delegate Meeting The first day agenda is largely about what the delegates are voting on, but not much else, which means that they were discussed at a previous meeting. Committee meetings are the second day, which can be more interesting. Ideas are discussed that might eventually go to a vote. Create a Delegate s Corner in the Newsletter where short articles on delegate meetings plus links to more information on the AKC website for HCA members to find out what is happening at AKC Delegate meetings. Kevin will provide something for the newsletter in the future. Next Meeting: September 20, 2012 26

Adjournment Motion: (Mindy) Motion to adjourn. Approve: All @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ FROM THE EDITOR: Thank you to all of the HCA members who have helped me with the newsletter this year! You have been so patient, as I tried to learn Microsoft Publisher. A special thank you to Mindy Isham! Without her guidance, a newsletter would never be available. This year has been a learning experience; as they say, Even old dogs can learn new tricks! HCA will have a new editor after this issue. Please give this person as much loving care as you have given me. HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR and smooches to your pooches!
