Mark your calendars for December 10 th. Always a fun time getting together to talk about our dogs! Show & Member NEWS PEG VOHR Spirit Lori Carver and the Field Spaniels have been playing Baron at the UKC shows this fall. The weekend before we left for our September National Specialty in St Louis, we did a UKC Practice and Baron picked up 3 Group ones, a Reserve Best in Show, 2 Best in Shows and to cap it all off he won Best of the Best! What a way to get some practice in. Had a great time at our National (Purina Farms is a great place to hold a National). Our Sue Meachem and Bob came home for a visit 2 weeks later and we decided to meet at the UKC show (of course). Bob picked up 2 Group placements, Baron picked up a group placement (and a leg towards his UKC Grand Championship) and Spirit picked up a group placement. In late October I went to 2 weekends of UKC shows outside of Syracuse Week 1 Baron placed in the group every day and also picked up another Best in Show. They had Veteran competition and Spirit picked up a Best Veteran in Show and 3 Reserve Bests. They also had Brace competition and the boys picked up a Best Brace in show and 2 reserve bests. Week 2 Baron Won the group twice and was second twice. On Veterans Day weekend, Sue and I hatched a plan to meet at a UKC show in Buffalo (why not it's about equal distance between the 2 of us now). Sue brought Teal along this time and Baron was able to pick up 3 more Grand Championship legs (only 1 more to go). He also won a group and picked up 2 group thirds. Spirit decide he wanted to get in on it and won the breed once. They also had Brace competition and the boys won Best Brace in Show 3 times. Back to AKC competition at the Thanksgiving Cluster in Springfield Spirit picks up a Veteran Group 2 and Baron is Best of Opposite Sex twice and Select once. Dorianne Almann: At the Great Barrington Kennel Club AKC Scent Work trial on Sept. 22, Taika earned her Scent Work Exterior Advanced (SEA) title with a 2nd place. She also Q d in her Scent Work Interior Advanced search. The trial was held on the wonderful grounds of Stockbridge, MA s Camp Mah-Kee-Nac. Taika came home with a title from the Nov. 11 USCSS trial Detection Dog Endurance (DDE); she earned her third Q in Heap O Hides. She qualified in her Intermediate Vehicle under Judge Peg Grey and earned a 1st place in her Interior Advanced search under Judge Sally Underwood-Miller. The trial was held at ELMM Community Center (Winchester, NH). Our NW2 title is proving elusive: The best we could do in Ashby, MA on Sept. 23 was place 2nd place in our Vehicle search and at Camp Lincoln (Kingston, NH) on Nov. 18, place 3rd in our Interior Building search. Fiddler (Calliope's Fiddler on Eden Trail) Dorie Viguers lovely golden boy finished his Novice Barn Hunt title (RATN) on Oct 21. -3-

Emily McDermott's English Cocker Spaniel Archer (Whitfield's Danger Zone CD BN RA TD TDU CGCA TKN) had a fantastic two days, November 23 and 24, at the Thanksgiving Cluster two Rally Excellent legs in two shows!! On Friday at Windham County KC's Show he qualified in Excellent B with a 95, and on Saturday at South Windsor KC's show he qualified again in Excellent B with a 85. Super job Archer...so very proud of my boy!! Rally is a lot of fun, and we had a great time in the ring both days. Quite a weekend! Jason Mazzone s Shetland Sheepdog, Raven, finished her grand championship under Dr. Klaus Anselm in Springfield, MA on October 27. She is now GCH TR's Deja Blue Bi Walters Way And from Cyndi Bussey Annie ( CH Mariki Paedeia's Dreamboat Annie At Mystic) finished her championship at the Ramapo Dog show on October 13, under judge Ed Hall! Since then Annie has been on fire, earning 18 of her 25 points for her Grand Champion title, and needs now only 7 single points to complete it. She has also gone Group 4 at the Elm City dog show, under Susan Carr, and OHG1 at the Springfield Dog show (Robert Ennis SB for a 5pt major)! Shane Peters and Sharon Domier are happy to announce that Sapphire, their Bearded Collie, earned the last point she needed at the Thanksgiving Cluster to become a champion. Loved, trained, and shown by Sharon Domier, Sapphire will soon be CH Larkslane Blisshollow Sapphire BN RE FDC ACT1 CGCA TKI Jackie Smith and Steve Krulish had a great two weekends at the recent West Springfield shows (Oct 19-21 and 25-28) with their Stonebull Bullmastiffs. GCH Stonebull's We Own The Night of DCP, aka Pearson, was there for 6 of the 7 shows and took BOB each day with 3 group placements. CH Bulla's The Mighty Quinn CD, aka Pooge, got 1 WD, 2 BOW, and a BOS for a total of 12 points to finish his CH. CH Stonebull's Midnight Rider, aka Silver, got a WB, BOW, and BOS for a total of 8 points to finish her CH on Thursday, then took BOS in each of the last 3 shows for a total of 7 Grand CH points. And late breaking news at the December 1 st and 2 nd Springfield shows Silver got BOS on Saturday and Pooge, shown excellently by Ryan Blanker, got Select on Saturday and BOB on Sunday. Sure, you think your dog is fast. But have you ever wondered how fast? Can your dog outrun Usain Bolt, who has been called the fastest runner in the world? He just might: Usain s fastest time has been clocked at almost 28 mph yet dogs have been known to reach speeds of 35-45 mph. Well, you no longer have to wonder how fast your dog can run. FAST CAT which stands for Coursing Ability Test is a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run one at a time, chasing a lure. It s over before you know it and it s nothing short of awe-inspiring to watch your dog run at top speed, ears back, eyes focused, legs strong. And if your dog is really fast, you might earn bragging rights if his name makes onto our list of top 20 fastest dogs by breed! Although it is a relatively new sport, its popularity has spread like wildfire. No wonder. According to one AKC official, The FAST CAT provides a terrific opportunity to introduce new participants to the world of AKC sports as one of the few events where all that is needed to compete is a dog s natural instincts. https://www.akc.org/sports/coursing/fast-cat/ Lambchop The Fast Cat Bullmastiff Steve Krulish AKC s Fast Cat, for those not familiar, is nothing more than a 100 yd dash. One person holds the dog at the starting line and another is at the finish to catch the dog. A line pulls a plastic bag lure for the dog to chase along the enclosed course, the run is timed, and the time is converted to mph. The mph is multiplied by a handicap determined by the dog s size, 2 for those <12, 1 for dogs >=18, and 1.5 for those in between, to determine points earned. Your dog needs 150 points for the BCAT title, 500 for DCAT and 1000 for FCAT. All the trials we have attended have been 2-day events with 2 runs per day. It was toward the end of 2017 that Jackie Smith had taken Awen (aka Lambchop) to a show down in W. Springfield. She happened to run into Chris Klein who we know from agility. The Saluki club was running a Fast Cat trial, and Chris told her that she just had to try it. It didn t take much arm twisting. Awen did her one run in 9.18 seconds which translates to 22.28 mph. Chris said she thought that was pretty good for a Bullmastiff. In fact, it made her #5 out of 8 bullmastiffs listed for 2017, and Jackie was hooked and so was Awen. We wanted to enter her in another trial, but there were none coming up locally. We did find one down in NJ in early June. We entered but got in for only one day; the trials fill quickly. When it came time for her run, I was there at the start to release her and Jackie was at the finish to catch. Jackie asked me to quickly come down to the finish to help manage Awen as she would be all hyped by the chase. The line that runs down the course with the lure runs in a rectangle with half of the line outside of the course. Unfortunately, they were running that line outside on the same side that the dogs were exiting the course, and when they ran the line to get the lure back to the start, that line was running very close to where we were standing. The sound of the line running caused Awen to alert, which wasn t too bad, but when a small white fuzzy frayed knot in the line caught Awen s eye, it was all I could do the hold her and move further out away from the line. She desperately wanted to catch that knot. Awen now knows what that whirring sound means and when she hears it, she wants to find and go after that lure. Some weeks later, Jackie was down at the Big E for an Obedience trial with Awen. She was doing Novice, and the ring for Novice was set between two other rings. While Jackie and Awen were doing an off-lead heel, a couple of people were setting up the next-door ring for the next class. As Jackie and Awen came to the designated halt, the people in the next ring needed to measure something and started running out a large tape measure. That tape measure unwinding made the same high-pitched whir as the Fast Cat lure line. Awen heard it, knew what it meant and came to attention. Jackie gave Awen the heel command and Awen took off at a run, leaped over the gating, and went straight to the person holding the end of the tape, who may have felt she was under attack, and started looking for the lure. Fortunately, Jackie happened to mention Awen s Fast Cat experience to the judge the prior day, and he understood what had happened, so it was nothing worse than an excusal for leaving the ring. On Sept 22-23 rd, we attended a 2-day Fast Cat trial in South Windsor CT. I was holding again, with Jackie catching. When Awen heard the line running to return the lure to the start, she was ready to go. She did 2 runs each day, between 23-24 mph, and with her final run on Sunday, earned more than enough points for her BCat title. -7-
