Living in upstate New York, means that dog shows are a lot easier to attend in the summer and a lot warmer! That being said, this can be a great time for big majors with a few phone calls. Rich and Jeanine Poyfair have done a great job of this and I know that sometimes we ll go to a show we weren t planning to attend just because we know there will be other dogs there. Points are nice, not to mention the socializing and good time with other GSCA members. If you re entering a show and you know others around may go, too, give them a call or an email and let them know you are going. It may be all they need to enter and you could end up with a major. The summer also brings travel plans and vacations. Think ahead when traveling with your Giants. Their needs are different in the summer and if you re heading to the northeast for the first time, bring flea and tick prevention if you will be anywhere near woods and grass. New York and New England is ground zero for ticks this time of year and they carry some awful diseases. If you do find one on your dog, be sure to get to a vet and ask about a round of antibiotics as a precaution. lack bugs and black dogs don t mix. Outdoor Agility trials can be a ball (if the weather is nice) and Obedience and Rally are great on grass. Maybe this year is the year you try something new. Lure Coursing, tracking, herding or some of the other field events might be just what you and your dog are looking for and someone in the GSCA is participating in every one of the events and more. Want to try something new but don t know where to start? Send an e-mail to the GSCA oard (something like, I want to do herding near Milwaukee" and we ll send you some GSCA members who participate in that sport near you. ut, it s up to you to make it happen. Even if you don t know anything about the event, be bold and go and explore. You might be very surprised at how much fun you and your dog have. on t forget, September 20-22 will be the Canadian Giant Schnauzer National Specialty in Montreal. How long have you been a GSCA member? Since 2004 GSCA alance Sheet How did you get into GS? y accident. In 1996, I saw a big, black, hairy dog, labeled a Lab/Terrier mix, featured on a local news channel, so while my husband was on a business trip, I went to the shelter to pick up the dog. On my way home with him, I stopped by my Vet's office. The Vet Tech went into the back room and brought out her Giant Schnauzer. At that point, I knew that what I really had was a Giant Schnauzer. After extensive research on the background of the breed, I was too fascinated to stop at just one. I took in 2 rescues shortly after, one of those being the first Giant Schnauzer to receive an AKC herding title. At that point, I was hooked. A couple of years later, I acquired a Giant with a European working background as well as a Giant from a conformation background; my goal being to produce a Giant Schnauzer with the intelligence, conformation, biddability and work ethic to be a valued member of the family and an effective, working stock dog. What do you do with your GS? Since I live on a ranch, my Giants are my ranch hands. For fun, we participate in AKC and AHA herding, obedience, rally and agility. We hope to try our paw at arn Hunt and Tracking later this year. What other hobbies do you have, besides dogs? Hobbies without my dogs? Is there such a thing?! What is your favorite toy to give the dogs? Their favorite toy is an empty plastic milk jug. est non-dog event you have recently attended: Mike and I were invited to attend the opening and dedication of the George W. ush Presidential Library and Museum in TX. President Obama, wife Michelle; President Clinton, wife Hillary; President George W. ush, wife Laura; President George H. W. ush, wife arbara; President Carter, wife Roselyn, Condoleezza Rice as well as many other dignitaries were present. Truly a once in a lifetime event! If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went. Will Rogers

Unlike breed, that has one overall winner, obedience has two overall winners: Highest Scoring og in the Regular Classes, referred to as High in Trial (HIT) and Highest Combined Score in Open and Utility, referred to as High Combined (HC). The GSCA does not often award a HC as the requirements to earn this award are so difficult. For example, going back 10 years there has been only one other time when HC was awarded at a National Specialty. It was Linch Pin s Luscious Lola UX RE (Lola) owned and handled by Jennifer Tennison in 2010.
